How Can I Speed Up My CS5 Editing On My iMac?

I have a 2 year old iMac with 12gb memory & 2.7ghz processor. When I first got it, I could whizz through my editing with barely any lag when running actions in PS CS4 (now upgraded to CS5). It got kind of boggy so a friend who is much more computer savvy than I came over recently & after looking at my set up suggested buying a LaCie 120GB Thunderbolt SSD external drive to use solely as my scratch disk for CS5. It did improve things a little, but not nearly where it needs to be when I'm editing wedding with 600 images! Any Mac users out there who can suggest something for me to try? Much appreciated!

More programs rarely fix a slow more mac. It is usually less programs.
When did it start? General troubleshooting of a mac usually involves some standard divide and concur techniques..
1) Reboot into recovery and check the drive for errors (command-R at the chime, use disk utility to select your boot drive then hit the repair button)
This may or may not help but at least it establishes a known good file system structure
2) Boot into safe mode and see if the mac is still slow (restart and at the chime hold the shift key). This will skip loading system level 3rd party drivers. If this solves the problem then something you installed is conflicting with your mac.
3) Create a new user account just for testing (give it admin previledges). Log into it and see if the problem persists. If this fixes it then you could have problems in your local library files or maybe user level permission issues.
See if you can narrow it down then ask for addition help here.

Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking, and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple) under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

A model 5.1 MBP, late 15" 2008 can accommodate 8 GB RAM. That will help since you are using Mavericks. The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

A SSD will enhance performance significantly in boot, shutdown and resource intensive applications. In all other aspects, performance will remain the same (such as e-mail, text edit, Internet browsing).
Installation is easy. Look at this video from OWC:

Understand that SSDs are still expensive. Consider a hybrid drive, which I use. For a small premium in price compared to a conventional HDD you do get faster boot and shutoff times. The same in all other respects.

How can I speed up the extract() function queries on XML

Please I need some light on xml and indexes.
This is my case:
I use Oracle 9i R2.
I have a table with some rows containing some few xml documents (each row contains a big xml document).
Given a value for an attribute of a tag, I want to extract the entire section within the tags.
Example:
<MYTAG number="1">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
<MYTAG number="2">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
<MYTAG number="x">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
So for number=2 I would like to extract from the document the xmltype
<MYTAG number="2">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
I created an index and have followed all the steps from the XML Database Developers Kit manual. Then I would use extrac() as the document says.
Now some doubts arised:
Are these text/xml indexes only useful for getting the rowid of my document?
I mean, if I select 'x' from the table looking for some value, then the index is used. But when I use extract in the select to get the section I look for, the query gets really low, specially when xml documents are big. I think when I have only row with one document, getting the rowid is not the problem, but the extraction from the document is.
Is the extraction process faster because of the index?
For what I see, the index only helps me to find the rowid, but then Oracle has to deal with the very big document inside the row. At that point Its oracle against a big text processing and index has nothing to do.
How can I speed up the extraction of the section?
If there any other index or tool for help extraction to be faster?
I would appreciate to know what can I do. I need help on this.

I am a new Lightroom 3 user. How can use the same image and edit it multiple ways to produce mulitple images to later export? For example, I have a picture of a bride and groom. I want to use that image and create a color image, a black and white image, and a close up of their hands.

Do I need to do either of those options before I start editing the image at all? For example, what if I am working on the image and doing some creative edits. Then I think of another option that I could do. Is it too late at that time or can I still get the original image to begin with?

The usual cause of that issue is a corrupted or missing font that Firefox replaces by another, in this case a bold, font.
As a test you can try to disable the default font and choose a few different fonts (Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, Times New Roman) to see if you can identify the culprit.<br />
you will have to reinstall that corrupted font.

No my version installs straight into German.
There are files in many languages to be found in the contents folders.
I managed to rename one that was recommended in a post on google in Photoshop
inside the german language files and most of the program
magically reverted back to its mother tongue, english.
There was a similar way to delete or rename a file in the
german files in Illustrator.
However, if you go deeper in the settings of both programs,
there are still some german words appearing.
Finally I managed to get a hold of a little program
on a page called 'Indesign secrets' that changed
the language back to english on Indesign.
But also with that one the change is not 100%.
Lastly there are the other little programs like Bridge
that completely stay German.
I just can't believe that I have bought a program last 2 years ago
that I can't use in it's first language.
English is in all the programs.
Adobe should just let the user decide, when they move countries
or simply want to use the same jargon and menu names.
Most of the tutorials or books are in English and always
using other names for the same buttons and settings just
seems odd, when you lived in a country for a while.
As far as I know, the new creative cloud version is
able to be switched.
If you have any comprehensive method to coerce all those
english files back from the hidden out into the open,
I would really appreciate it.

If it's the same computer, same CPU and same HD, no de-activation or re-activation should be necessary.
Install from scratch and apply all updates manually.
Please do a forum search. I and others have repeatedly answered the question about failed updates of CS5 a whole bunch of times recently.
Bottom line: the Adobe auto updater is utterly useless in CS5 and prior versions. You need to download the updates and apply them manually yourself.
I and others have even supplied the links for Mac and Win, which you haven't even bothered to specify.

Time needed can depend on several things.
• less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
• Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
• Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
• Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

What a pain...you must go through all that to remove it?! So many unessary steps!
I also find that when I sync up a new photo folder to replace the old set that I previously wiped out and replaced it staggers afew pictures from before in with the new and will not show all of the new....so frustrating!!! I even close out iPhoto and go into the photo album and all the photos that synced up which are the ones I do want are all there....it's so different than what I see the album in iPhoto. I found one other way to do it. I just deleted them all out of my iTunes library. Now I can re-import them from Window's My Music file with the original artists' names intact.

Does the sound appear to be from the hard drive, such as when you do any work (which means the hard drive is being written to)?

In any case, a grinding noise is what I had, followed by other very strange behavior and the diagnosis was hard drive failure. So, whether you are covered or not, I would strongly suggest that you backup all your data as quickly as you can and - if you're not covered by warranty or the recall - book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.

In the first instance, I'd use Onyx and run through its sequence of maintenance and tune up tools:
Verify, Maintenance, Cleaning.
I'd also reset the SMC and PRAM (Google them)
If that doesn't help then I'd look at System Preferences.. > Accounts > Login Items tab (not Login Options). Check what processes get started at login and decide which ones you don't want.
After that I'd use Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a lot of computer power or if anything else nasty might be happening.
If none of this helped then my final step would be to reinstall OS X.
