How can I speed up my mini?!!

I have a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 GB memory, running 10.4.11. It has been running slooowly for awhile now. That is, applications are slow to open, mail (Entourage) is especially a nightmare. Then the apps are slow to perform. I do mostly basic stuff, except for Dreamweaver and Photoshop. No video editing, etc. Web browsing is fine. Is there any software that will clean it out and speed it up? Should I get Leopard? (I was afraid of wasting money if it slowed it down even more.) Thanks! Debby

You list a number of applications which in all but current versions are not intel-native - meaning that on Core Duo (such as your 1.66), or Core2Duo minis, will require Rosetta to load up and run as an on-the-fly translator. That means that within the 1Gb RAM on your system, you are running the application, the translator, and MacOS - a bit of a squeeze, particularly if you are running more than one application at a time.
Meanwhile, Safari, Mail, iPhoto, etc, which came with your mini are all native software, thus will not need Rossetta to load up and run, and will be noticeably faster.... unless you are also running one of the older applications.
My recommendation is to upgrade the RAM in your mini to the maximum of 2Gb. This is almost essential if you were going to run Leopard, because this wouldn't run well with legacy software in the current 1Gb, but increasing RAM in your system running Tiger would be a good idea for the overall performance of the system in any event.
In addition to checking that your hard drive has plenty of free space (MacOS uses the hard drive for temporary file storage so it needs a few Gb free, and will slow dramatically if it isn't available), you might want to try a copy of YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/) set to perform all tasks and left to run. This utility performs a number of basic 'spring cleaning' type tasks on your system, and while it will seem to slow the system even further after it reboots (and the first boot after it runs is typically very slow) that is only because the system is rebuilding cache files. After that, the system should run a little better.
If that doesn't do the trick, then you may have issues rather deeper in the system - font conflicts or problems with property list files for example.

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things. By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files. I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule. The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac. That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.

How can I speed up the extract() function queries on XML

Please I need some light on xml and indexes.
This is my case:
I use Oracle 9i R2.
I have a table with some rows containing some few xml documents (each row contains a big xml document).
Given a value for an attribute of a tag, I want to extract the entire section within the tags.
Example:
<MYTAG number="1">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
<MYTAG number="2">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
<MYTAG number="x">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
So for number=2 I would like to extract from the document the xmltype
<MYTAG number="2">
.....big stuff here
</MYTAG>
I created an index and have followed all the steps from the XML Database Developers Kit manual. Then I would use extrac() as the document says.
Now some doubts arised:
Are these text/xml indexes only useful for getting the rowid of my document?
I mean, if I select 'x' from the table looking for some value, then the index is used. But when I use extract in the select to get the section I look for, the query gets really low, specially when xml documents are big. I think when I have only row with one document, getting the rowid is not the problem, but the extraction from the document is.
Is the extraction process faster because of the index?
For what I see, the index only helps me to find the rowid, but then Oracle has to deal with the very big document inside the row. At that point Its oracle against a big text processing and index has nothing to do.
How can I speed up the extraction of the section?
If there any other index or tool for help extraction to be faster?
I would appreciate to know what can I do. I need help on this.

I insert it into the mac, but the OS cannot load the disc and the disc cannot be ejected even i pressed the "eject" button.

This happened to a family members macbookpro. A mini-cd inserted, couldn't be mounted or ejected by the drive.
I cut a rectangle from a cereal box about two inches wide and 6 inches long. Abour an inch and half from one end in the middle I cut a notch and bent it down a little.

I then inserted it slowly into the drive notch down and slowly pulled out. I did this few times and caught the mimi-cd and removed it. The drive has worked flawlessly for several years
A few days after this happened I was in BestBuy and an Apple rep was there displaying new Apple products. I asked him about it and he said they have a tool that ***** it out.

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive. So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire. I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive. But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much. yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive. Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers. I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

Time needed can depend on several things.
• less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
• Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
• Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
• Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

Ideally the best thing to do in this situation is a soft reset, press and hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
The factory settings option you've gone for should resolve this as well, but unless you've backed up you will lose content with this option.

Does the sound appear to be from the hard drive, such as when you do any work (which means the hard drive is being written to)?

In any case, a grinding noise is what I had, followed by other very strange behavior and the diagnosis was hard drive failure. So, whether you are covered or not, I would strongly suggest that you backup all your data as quickly as you can and - if you're not covered by warranty or the recall - book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.

In the first instance, I'd use Onyx and run through its sequence of maintenance and tune up tools:
Verify, Maintenance, Cleaning.
I'd also reset the SMC and PRAM (Google them)
If that doesn't help then I'd look at System Preferences.. > Accounts > Login Items tab (not Login Options). Check what processes get started at login and decide which ones you don't want.
After that I'd use Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a lot of computer power or if anything else nasty might be happening.
If none of this helped then my final step would be to reinstall OS X.

I encountered some issues with my previous installation of Leopard, so I decided to format, and re-install it.
I start the installation using "Erase and Install" and after the disk verifies, I start the installation. Only problem is, the installation's giving me an estimated time remaining of 26 hours.

That first estimate can be very erroneous. It should quickly settle down to a more reasonable number.
