How Can I spin down fans? I can't!

In kernel 2.6.23 times, without starting sensors or fancontrol daemons or any special module, only with laptop-mode-tools, fans were automatically spinned down when the laptop was "idle", not doing anything or only programming with vim.
After a few time, fans are never spinned down, generating unnecessary noise and spending battery. I have tried the wiki method for controlling fans described here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_speed_control but sensors only show this to me:
[root@helena david]# sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +28.0°C (crit = +85.0°C)
coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +28.0°C (crit = +85.0°C)
And pwmconfig tells me this:
/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
I have searched the web and I found that there is a small bug in pwmconfig, but no more about how I can get fans spin down as before.
Anyone has a solution for me?
Greetings

here's kind of a 'cheesy' way to do it lol -

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:
Learn about the fans in your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,

how can i fix my mac book pro i bought in mid 2010, it is slowing down. the pin wheel does spin a alot.

    try this;
open disk utility - verify disk permissions - repair disk permissions if errors are found.  might take an hour or less - depending on how much errors needs to be repaired.
restart your macbook and see if that sorts it out for you.
also check your hard drive space.  if your hard drive is almost full, that will also contribute to your macbook getting slower....
    good luck

  • HT1305 how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?

What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?

I'm having a similar problem. Someone PLEASE HELP!
I'll start with just an example of what I've been facing. During the composing of this post, when I switched from Firefox to Word, I had to wait 60 seconds before the spinning wheel stopped and I got a cursor. I then copied one set of Etrecheck results, switched back to Firefox, hit Command-v to paste and had to wait 45 seconds or so for the spinning wheel to stop. And the paste operation didn't paste until I hit Command-v again (with no wait this time).
    Here's what I've done:
I tried three times to run a scan with avast! and all three times the scan was unable to complete.
I restarted holding down Command-r and it found and fixed many permissions, but found no problems with files.
I ran Etrecheck in a "Safe Boot" and in a normal startup and there were two things that were tagged as "[failed]" in the normal startup:
    Launch Agents: [failed]com.logmein.LMILaunchAgentFixer.plist Support
    User Launch Agents: [failed][email protected]
I apologize for taking up so much space, but here are the results from both Etrecheck runs:

  • I've got a 15" white macbook which I bought about 2 years ago. It froze the other day and wouldn't respond so I shut it down. When I turn it on now it comes up with a flashing file with a question mark on it. How can I fix it?

I've got a 15" white macbook which I bought about 2 years ago. It froze the other day and wouldn't respond so I shut it down. When I turn it on now it comes up with a flashing file with a question mark on it. How can I fix it? I've tried a few things i've seen online but the futhest ive got is to put the start up disk in when you makes it go to a grey screen with an apple logo and the spinning wheel which then stops spinning. Can anybody help?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once.It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • How can I tell if fan between front and rear bay is working?

    hi all
How can I tell if fan between front and rear bays is working? I put my hand behind G4 MDD to feel for air flow and it seems minimal. I hear a wind tunnel sound but I feel more heat than air flow. Please help as I don't want my Mac to overheat
    Thanks, Web dude

You can run your mac with the side "door" open - down flat to the right of the computer. You should be able to see the fan do (or not do) its thing.
I have done this (run the mac with the side open) many times. For safety, I turn the mac off before opening / closing the door.

How can I get rid of spinning colored balls on my Desktop Mac, it is really bogging down my system.

    I have 1GB RAM, 667Mhz, DDR2-SDRAM, 20 Inch Screen.
Sorry for lack of info, my first time doing this. I think I have found the problem, non responding App.
    Thank You,

  • How can I remove redundant entries it the "Open With" pull down?

In Mountain Lion, now, when I right click on a document or image and move down to "Open With" I get a triple redundant (long) list of applications that might do the task. How can I purge the list of all the duplicates?  Part of the problem COULD be that I have three operating systems on my machine,(different spinning disk volumes) snow leopard, lion and mountain lion.  SL and Lion, are not spinning now, but they have been ot one time or another.  Is there a function that re-collects the AVAILABLE disk applications for "Open With?"
Apple needs to update the below product list for "OS X 10.8.1"

Go back to the editor and close the photo there.

  • Fan not working. Hardware problem, or is it just quiet, or is it Linux and DSDT? How can I know?

    Hi.
The fan in my Lenovo 3000 V100 doesn't seem to work.
    - On Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) the laptop overheats sometimes to point of shutting down.
    - I don't use Windows, but I tried a bootable Windows CD and it seems the fan isn't working.  I can't hear it and it doesn't seem that any air is coming out of the fan.  I tried with Thinkpad Fan Controller 0.20 and manually setting the fan speed to the maximum.  I noticed no difference.
    - When starting the computer I can hear the hard drive the first few seconds, but I don't think I hear the fan so I don't think it's starting at all.  Os is it so quiet?
How can I be sure it is a hardware problem?
I ask this because a many laptops have problems in Linux with DSDT (a file from the BIOS) than only work on Windows.  And I have had this problem in the past.  (I tried compiling the Linux kernel with a DSDT I fixed myself and posted in this forum 2 years ago, but this time it didn't work).

are you able to monitor fan RPM ?
if not how comes this is not availble to read that info?
    may this help :

MacBook Pro shuts down when I close lid. How can I prevent it?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Can I spin down my internal disk? Open Firmware or terminal commands?

    Hello all,
I have not been around here for a while, but I desperately need your help.
Does anyone know how I can spin down my internal disk?
Possibly with the terminal or Open Firmware?
Does anyone know all the Open Firmware commands or
where a list can be found so that I can explore the situation myself?
Here is some more detail of what I want to do and why.
My internal disk crashed a while ago.
(My bag slid off my shoulder and the machine hit the brick sidewalk below right on its' corner:>(
I have since been running off my little pocket-size fire-wire disk.
Today the internal disk finally really bit the dust and the bearings are making quite a noise.
(If I tip the PB while it is running the noise turns into a whine of varying pitch and loudness.
It sounds like my poor PB is crying in pain. LOL)
I want to get the internal disk to spin down until I can afford a new one and I have the time to replace it.
    Any ideas?
I know I could open up the case and pull the plug on it,
but maybe there is something better and easier.
Can anyone guide me in any possible terminal commands to eject it or
give some insight into firmware commands that may help?
I know the firmware can spin the disk down. - It does so for power management.
Also, one time when I booted, the disk gave the boot process such a bad error that
the boot process asked me what to do. I told it to eject the disk - then the disk spun down
and the machine booted normally off the FW disk.
So, maybe there is an Open Firmware command I could use to permanently shut the thing off.
I cannot use the Disk Utility to unmount or eject it.
In Disk Utility, sometimes the disk is already unmounted and grayed out.
So therefor the unmount and eject commands are also greyed out.
At other times the disk does not even show up in Disk Utility.
    Thanks, Bob

    Thanks for the fast response.
Although your suggestion did not do the trick, it jogged my old mind into
finding a solution that does work. Or seems to work for right now.
The 'drutil' is a command for CD-R/RW media, so it could not see or act on my internal hard drive.
Your suggestion to use a disk utility command sent me off to find a command for other devices and
    I remembered the 'diskutil' command.
I did a 'diskutil list' and after a good wait for the failed disk to allow completion,
I was given a list that showed what device the internal disk was (/dev/disk2).
I then did a 'diskutil eject /dev/disk2' and after a similar wait, the disk was ejected and it spun down.
It was a pleasant surprise since the drive is not ejectable and since the OsX Disk Utility could not eject it.
There are things (running the disk utility) that do seem to wake up the disk occasionally,
but all I have to do is issue the command again.
    Thanks
p.s. Perhaps I was not clear in my original question that
I wanted to spin down my internal ide hard disk - sorry if that was a confusion.
p.p.s. It is also very interesting that I called Apple support and
they could not give me this simple solution.

My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. A while ago the computer fell down and hit the cable. How can I tell if the computer is working ok. Doesn't show mirroring any more. Was working while watching a movie but when I pulled it out from the computer and put it back in the system would no longer mirrorr the screen on the TV.

The best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be for FREE!
    Ciao.

  • How can I remove the by-default text in the drop-down box in a fill-in-the-blank answer?

I have this text in English "Select" for each drop-down list that is big enough:
It appears in French at my project manager's place (in France).
Question 1: Can we remove that text totally?
Question 2: How can I make sure it will only appear in English?
    Many thanks

I found it myself how to do it. The error says that it is not able to find the reference object i.e  it is asking us to refer to the table. The following piece of code will solve this problem. Have to implement this in WDDOMODIFYVIEW method of the view. This thing works comrades enjoy...
