How can I split my internal hard drive into 3 bootable partitions?

I am looking to get at least 3 partitions. One for Mac OS X, one for Windows, and one for a Linux Distro. Any Apple/third party software capable of creating 3 bootable partitions. Basically, I need to be able to access them via the steps:
Power down
Power up
Hold option key (after the chime)
Select Partition
Anything helps. Thanks for your time.

Thats why the need for rEFit and the need for GPT bootloader for the Linux partition.
rEFIt hasn't been updated in ages, I wouldn't use it on a 10.7 system. 10.6 sure, not 10.7
Links online are old and for earlier OS X verisons, not for Lion and it's usual problems and re-install proceedures.
Linux requires 2 partitions, one for swap, so really one needs 6 parttions on a Lion Mac.
EFI (hidden)
OS X
Linux swap
Linux
Windows
Lion Recovery HD (hidden)
Then there is a question of getting hardware drivers for Linux for newer Mac's, software to stop the fans from going into turbo mode etc., all that has to come from other that Apple sources.
It takes someone else more geekier to have a Mac and even bother to do all this for others, Apple won't supply the drivers, and newer Mac's fall by the wayside and have to wait until someone does it. Pre-2011 Mac's are no problem.
It's has to do with the low market share of Mac's, and that those wanting to install Linux directly on a Mac are a even smaller nitch, then a smaller nitch still of those who are coders and then will supply their code for others to use and install.
So getting this software is always going to be a behind process, then a recent Apple update can break the whole mess as they expect to see only OS X and Windows 7, not a triple or quad booting system.
So the best course of action, unless the person is full on computer coder geek, is for most Mac users to install Linux via a virtual machine software, which VirtualBox is free.
I'm all for open source, however since Apple has clearly show they are moving to locking down their computers, copy protected Mac App Store (no open source software allowed) and the possibility OS X itself will become copy protected too, there has been just about little further interest in Apple anymore from the open source community, and you really can't blame them, it's Apple.
If one needs full hardware performance, it's better now to get a Linux machine from System76, then have a Mac with OS X and Windows 7 in Bootcamp.
Forget installing Linux on a Mac unless it's running 10.6 and a 2010 model or earlier, there is no future 10.7 on out.

  • How can I replace my internal hard drive on my Macbook?

I have a 13 inch aluminum late 2008 MacBook.  The processor is 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running OS X Lion 10.7.4.  The hard drive is currently set up as follows:
Macintosh HD 132.5 GB (with only 1.32 GB free)
BOOTCAMP 26.69 GB (with 6.15 GB free)
I am unsure if this matters but here is the info just in case:
On my Macintosh HD I have:
    Audio 3.04 GB
    Movies 33.11 GB
    Photos 36.98 GB
    Apps 15.27 GB
    Backups Zero GB
    Other 42.78 GB
I only use 1 software program on my Bootcamp (which I hardly use but must keep to run an electric vinyl cutting machine).  I have thought of re-partitioning the drive.  But then I got thinking that maybe the drive is just too small and it's no use.
I also have an older Lacie 300 GB external hard drive that I use to keep all of my iTunes Library, most of my iPhoto library and most of my data.  I have another older Lacie 300 GB external hard drive that I use exclusively for my Time Machine back ups.
I also have a Western Digital 2 TB external hard drive that I use to put all of my movies on so that I can play them on any of my computers or plug into my Play Station 3 and play them on any of my TV's.
I have considered just getting another Western Digital 2 TB external hard drive to use for virtually all of the files/pictures/movies/music etc. on this internal hard drive.
Right now I am unsure what the best move is to make.  I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Apple Tech Support today trying to buy an internal hard drive to install myself.  They were not very helpful (in fact he told me I would have to ship in my machine just to replace the battery which is NOT true).  Is there anyone out there who can give me some advice on this situation?  Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more.

    Hi all
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more. I only can back up external disks. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    All answers are much appreciated

I don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one.  I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it.  Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

  • How can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?

how can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's impossible to format a hard drive without losing the data. One thing you can do before formatting is to copy the files from the external drive to your internal drive, and then, format the external drive. After formatting, copy the files to the external drive again, and everything will be as before formatting it

  • Can I install an internal hard drive in i-mac intel 17" ?

Where can I get an internal hard drive compatible for intel i-mac? I need a larger hard drive, like 250gb or something. Can I install it myself?

You can go to a apple service center like CompUSA and have them install one for you. If you buy the drive from them, they will install it for free, otherwise it is like a 40 dollar charge. DO NOT attempt to install it yourself, not only will you void your warranty, the intel iMac is very difficult to open and work on and you will probably break something.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT)  Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new Macbook with one USB-C only?

How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new MacBook with only one USB-C?

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will.  However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive.  There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure.  If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.

  • How do I format a internal Hard Drive from a PC/laptop

How do I format a internal Hard Drive from a PC/laptop...My old internal hard drive had problems so I took it out and I have a 100 gb Seagate ATA drive that I replaced it with. In the mean time I've been using a external drive to boot up my powerbook g4. Not sure of what to do.

Hi, capitala1. Start your Powerbook up from your Mac OS X installer disc and open Disk Utility from the Installer or Utilities menu (depending on which OS version it is). Select the newly-installed Seagate drive inside your Powerbook as the target, and format it "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". It makes no difference at all that the drive came out of a PC laptop: this is exactly the same procedure you'd use if the drive had just come brand new from its manufacturer.

  • How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

No chance without special tools/knowledge. There are companies that can do it, unless you use multiple format or rewrite data with special erase ustility or unless you have done low level format.
