now and then i get a window poping up to ask if i want firefox 5 which i don,t due to google toolbar not been compatible.how can i stop this window appearing?

I have a Mac Mini (early 2009) running OSX 10.8.1 on a Windows network that is driving me nuts.
Background
Typically, 6 or 7 computers are running (Windows 7, OSX 10.8.1 and Linux) on the network at any given point in time. Network printers and hand helds (iphones, PlayBooks, etc.) are also connected.
The problem
If one specific Windows 7 desktop is running, a pop-up error message comes up frequently. The eror message is:
There was a problem connecting to the server "[Server name or IP]". You do not have permission to access this server.
The pop-up sometimes refers to the device name and sometimes refers to the IP address of the desktop.
Oddities:
This does not occur on a MacBook Pro also running 10.8.1
The error message does not occur for other Windows computers on the network. I have laptops running Windows 7 Professional that have never shown up on the error message..
Files on the problem desktop are easily accessible through [Finder].
Things I've tried to resolve the problem:
Ran software update - multiple times
Changed the destination drive for [Time Machine] and completed a backup
Cleared the "Recent Server" list from the [Finder][Go][Connect to Server] screen
Attempted to demount the desktop in [Finder]. The option was not available
Disconnected from the desktop in [Finder]. This did not resolve the problem and the desktop was automatically showing on the [Shared] list in [Finder] after the next reboot.
Booted in SAFE mode to see if the problem re-occurred in SAFE mode. It did not.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you. It wasn't in there directly, but CISCO's "Network Magic" was there. Removing it appears to have solved the problem.

Did you check the network setting?

You can also manage all permissions on the about:permissions page via the location bar.<br />
Use "All Sites" to set the defaults.

To William Lloyds recommendation I have to add the following: I tried to implement the suggestion and thus to have the Mobileme-account closed to avoid the lenghty process mentioned, however, I am given to understand that if one choose to have the account closed, ALL of the galleries/albums etc, so far hosted within Mobileme will ALSO be deleted within APERTURE!! I do not see why this should happen because of Firefox. Maybe you have some sort of adware on your system.

hello, if you're getting a lot of unsolicited popups this might be a sign of malicious software being active on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

Firefox usually doesn't block pop-ups, especially if you allow them, but extensions and some security software can block pop-ups.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

How can I force pop-ups being opened in a new tab

We've a new software which always opens a pop-up window when clicking on the Java links. The content of such a re-sizable window perfectly fits into a new tab.
I'd like to force those new windows into a new tab.
Pop-up blocker is active and that internal site is in the exception list.
So it would be nice to have an option field for that in the general settings or in the Pop-up blocker settings.
This is no bug, but could be a new feature of Firefox (like in IE).

The easy way is to install 'Tab mix plus' addon and under 'links' set 'Java script & pop up restriction' to 'open all pop ups in tabs'.
You can also use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ to tweak a bunch of other tab settings.
There is always about:config but more often than not there is the easy way, an addon that will do it for you.
