How can I sync my new iPhone 4S to calendar, contacts, and photos on my MacBook?

Just bought my first iPhone after 2 years as an Android user. My 2008 MacBook would never talk to the Android, but now - they tell me - I can backup my phone onto my computer and share contacts, calendar and photos with the computer.
I've plugged the phone into the computer but the computer's Finder doesn't show it. And the phone indicates it's charging but doesn't show any way to swap data.
I feel like I'm missing something really basic ... but what?

All of this is handled through iTunes. You must have iTunes installed on the comptuer. Also, you will not be able to see any files in Finder, as the iPhone does not give you access to that information. The only time you will ever see anything from the iPhone in Finder is if you have photos in the Camera Roll.
After you download and install iTunes, you would set up syncing your device with specific apps on the computer, to handle calendar, contacts, and photos. You cannot use an iPhone 4S with iTunes 9; you must have iTunes 10.5 or later, and that will indeed not run on Mac OS X 10.4. You'll need to upgrade your computer's OS to at least Mac OS X 10.5.8.

Did you purchase the music from the iTunes store? If so, you can download it again for free as discussed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519. If the music was from other sources (ripped CDs, etc.) you have to sync your phone with iTunes on a computer to transfer it to your phone.

Csoud1 is correct. But if you still want to keep your iTunes Match subscribed and did not want to sync with your iOS devices, do the following:
On you iOS devices, just go to Setting > Music > disable iTunes Match

You can right click the iPhones in iTunes and choose to Reset the iTunes sync alerts, then choose to not merge contacts on the next sync or just sync the contacts to seperate iCloud accounts.

I have a new powerbook and want to give my girlfriend my old G4 power book, she has a new iphone 5s, and wants to create a new itunes/apple id. When i try to de authorize the G4 and sign in with her new apple ID it says bad password, how can i release the G4 from my cluster of authorized apples and make her the owner so she can download music and more importantly sync her music with her phone, she only has 3 songs on her iphone, and loaded all her CD's into the g4 but cant sync, im no dummy and this shouldnt be hard, but its driving me crazy!!!!!!

You cannot. Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.

Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.
