How can I tell if its a dead CPU or mobo?

Hi,
I am trying to fix a friend's dead (sort of) computer. He said the computer just stopped working and wouldn't restart. The "TCP" smell from the PSU suggested it had blown.
I've put a new PSU in (Mercury 400W - 3.3V@28A,5V@40A,12V@17A) and the following happens: the computer starts, CPU and PSU fans run, DVD and DVD-RW lights DO NOT light up and will not eject, there is no sound of the HD spinning, there are no error bleeps, on the D Bracket 2 all four lights light up as steady red!
The last suggests that its CPU - but surely I would get error bleeps too if there was a problem with the CPU??
How can I be sure that it is just the CPU and no mobo damage - I don't have a spare socket 754 mobo or CPU to try.
thanks in advance
Cheers

Richard,
No Jedi Mind Tricks or anything else needed - all the computer specs appear at the bottom of my original message - its a 7030 Ver 1.
"P.S. Which two lights are Red?" - don't think I mention two red lights anywhere in my original message, there are four lights on the D Bracket 2 - ALL ARE RED!
Cheers

Hi my friend!
To check what part of the computer that is damaged and not working disconnect everything inside the computer, CPU, Memory, Graphic card any IDE drive etc.
Now, make sure that the PSU is only conected to the motherboard and nothing else, also connect the power sw and power led.
Now, power on the system, if the system is not powering on check the power sw, if its still not powering on then it's likley that the motherboard is damaged.
If it is powering on the put in the graphiccard and try again, if an image is displayed saying somthing like processor or cpu missing, go ahead and install the processor with cooling and try again, if you still get this messege than you know its a problem ether with the processor or the socket, if you ain't getting processor error messege but memory error messege than you know that the processor is working some what well.
Anyway, the only way to test the socket or processor is by putting it into another hardware...
But this testing is at least some fingerpointing to the problem...

  • Superdrive - How can I tell if its broken or I'm just using it wrong?

I've had my Quad PPC G5 for a while now, and the Superdrive has always been flakey...
When I try to burn my vids using DVD Studio Pro mostly (but other software is used), it says it burns, but when move it to other machines or my TV, the vids freeze midway... When i copy the files to my PC and burn from there using Roxio, it burns fine & plays fine... I'm afraid to use the Superdrive now as I've given my stuff to people and they can't play it..
I also have problems ejecting discs once theyre in the drive...If i have nothing in there, eject works fine, but if i put discs (any discs) in there, I have to reboot and hold down the eject button to get them out...
I have AppleCare, but before i call, I'm hoping it is just a matter that I;m doing something wrong or using cheap DVDs (Generic DVD-R's 16X speed)... Buit that wouldn't explain away the eject issue...
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi James-
Here's the info on your drive (performance review):
    http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/First-look-LG-GSA-4165B-DVD-Burner/1st-look-conc lusion.html
The maker is LG- typically receives good reviews.
I notice that you are running OS 10.4.6. How long has it been since you did a system reinstall? With regard to the eject function, it could very well be that you have some corrupt files within the OS. Could be that a repair with Disk Utility could help. Beyond this, an Archive and Install may be useful, followed by (preferred) a clean system reinstall. A simple re-update might be all that is needed.....
But, since the drive has displayed the problem from the beginning, it does tilt the balance towards a hardware problem. Having said this, depending on the original OS version (10.4.2?), and the update history, the problem could lie within the firmware, or, system software.
Does the problem occur in a different user account? Setting up a second user account, with Admin privileges, is a good trouble shooting technique. If no problem, then it is in your account only. If the same, the saga continues.......
So- first, I would run Disk Utility (booted from install disk) and repair the hard drive. I would also repair permissions. Following this (after testing the drive) I would try a re-application of the 10.4.6 Combo Update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1046comboforppc.html
Should this fail, I think I would be inclined to use my Applecare.
As for the disk reading and writing- take note of the makers that are listed on the bottom of the review (1st look conclusion) page that I linked. Can't go wrong with them. Also, look at user responses on the following (select format):

I just posted a question similar to this.  My iPhone 6 will not charge when it is powered off.  When I had the iPhone 5, when it was powered off but charging, you would see the battery icon the whole time the phone was charging.  It would be a big battery icon in the middle of the screen.  Again, this is when it was powered off.
No, it wasn't powered. Off. It turned on when you plugged it in.

  • Nokia 6120c... 4gb SD Mem Card... How can I tell t...

i inserted a 4gb mem card in my nokia 6120 classic. how can i tell if its working. also where do i go to see what has been saved on the memory card. and how do i save on the mem card.

32GB will work BUT you need to format it to FAT32.
Depending on what version of WIndows you have, you may need to get a third-party program or force it to format to FAT32.
    Here's one how-to.
    http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/formatting-external-hard-drive-to-fat-32/
Also, the Sansa firmware was made before there were such large storage cards, and it may not be able to show all the files on the card if you have a whole lot of small files.
That's because there is a limit on the size of the database, which reads information from the files--Artist, Album, Title, etc.--and makes an index from them. It will show thousands of songs, and I have filled a 32GB card and had it show every song.
But...there is a character limit on the size of that index, and many people have run up against it.  It's not an exact number of files; every letter makes a difference, so if your Artist listing is Rolling Stones rather than The Rolling Stones you might be able to show a few more files.
You can see if you have that problem when you use the card because your listings (Album, Artist) will stop before the end of the alphabet.
If you do have too many songs for the Sansa to show, you can get different firmware at www.rockbox.org  that can handle a much larger (possibly unlimited--I don't know) database. Read up on it before installing--it sits alongside the Sansa firmware so you can switch between them.

  • How can we tell if the iphone is already fully charged in ios7? Even if its 100% the thunderbolt icon is still displayed. Not like in ios 6 that we will know when to unplug the charger because there is an indicator.

How can we tell if the iphone is already fully charged in ios7? Even if its 100% the thunderbolt icon is still displayed. Not like in ios 6 that we will know when to unplug the charger because there is an indicator.

For those who seem unfamiliar with what is being asked:
On iOS 6 and older, just because the phone reached 100%, didn't mean it was Fully Charged. The way you could tell was the lightning bolt symbol that indicated the device was charging would change to an outlet plug when the device was not only 100%, but also stopped accepting further charge. This symbol switch would occur anywhere from 5-15 minutes after the device already was displaying 100%.
Now, on iOS 7, while it still reaches 100% with that same lightning bolt charge symbol, during the 100% point, it never switches to the plug symbol to indicate the charge period is totally finished.
Can anyone confirm if there is a way to see this charge completion in iOS 7 since it appears that there is no longer a symbol for it? Is there any indication that Apple may have changed the charging display so that now it only displays 100% when it would have previously displayed that plug symbol?

  • PLEASE HELP! How can I tell if my Imac has been hacked?

PLEASE HELP! How can I tell if my Imac has been hacked? I see a few people have asked this question but the responses tended to be advice on what to do once you've been hacked, not what can done to find out if you have been hacked. I have a late 2012 model imac. My sharing was off and remote logging was off. I use an external router that send wireless to about 4 consoles in the flat. I don't think I have any firewalls up (now looking like a mistake). I think I'm possibly being hacked  due to abnormal behaviour and most recently my camera was turned off all day (no LED) then I went to record something on Photo Booth, the application popped up displaying an image of me getting dressed (nightmare!) which happened hours earlier when the camera was off. This image quickly then disappeared and the camera began working normally. Very strange and alarming. Please help me. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • How can you tell if a pic hasnt been tagged by iPhoto, and do you then...

How can you tell if a pic hasnt been tagged by iPhoto, and do you then do you then have to draw "missing box" around them
What I mean is tagged a few faces, imported some more pics, checked a few and they dont show as named faces, but are faces that are in my Faces source list (ie identified and named)
So do I then have to draw a box around known faces to me, and name them again (I think iPhoto will pop up as Im typing the names I already have)
It just means that even when i import and it doesnt name, I may have lots of pics that are of faces but not tagged and so not in my faces source list
    please help
    cheers
ps when are Apple going to upload the Getting Started manuals for iLife 09? its been a while since released now, ad they give a bit more insight than the video tutorials alone

No-one? It'll be nice to know how many pics of faces that arent yet tagged
    cheers

  • How can I tell if a message received is via iMessage?

My daughter has an iPhone  4 with iOS6 on, and I have an iPhone 5 with iOS6 on. We both have iMessage enabled and use it.
Now I can see when I have sent a message and its an iMessage as it is on blue. But how can tell if a message from my daughter is an iMessage as its in grey/white? I want to make sure that when she's sending me pics its using iMessage and not MMS as its so expensive.
I know if iMessage can't use data it defaults to SMS, but how can I tell received messages are definitely iMessages? Particularly as I say for pics and videos.
    Thanks

there's no current way to know that.
but a simple workaround is - switch MMS on her phone or tell your wireless carrier to put a block on MMS

  • How can we tell if a VI is already running before calling Start Asynchronous Call?

The new Start Asynchronous Call node is awesome for spawning multiple instances of reentrant VIs.  However, I've stumbled a bit in using it for non-reentrant VIs.  The old practice of using the "Run VI" method would allow us to check the Execution.State of the VI before invoking the method to run it.  That way if the State was Running or Run Top Level, we could skip the invoke node and just use a property node to open its front panel.  WIth the Start Asynchronous Call node, it looks like we have to use a strictly typed static VI reference, and when we open the VI reference, the VI gets reserved and its Execution.State = Running.  So, how can I tell if it is not just reserved by the thread but actually executing before making a redundant Start call?
By the way, the redundant Start has interesting behavior.  It will actually cause the targeted VI to be executed again after it stops.  Even if you hit the Abort button on the target VI, it will immediately execute again and again equal to the number of times the Start Asynchronous Call node was run.  There's nothing wrong with that, and I suppose the simple answer is to just go back to using the old "Run VI" method.  It's just that the ability to wire up those inputs directly to the connector pane is so nice.  Perhaps I am missing something obvious.  Oh, I am referring to the Call and Forget mode (0x80).
    Thanks,
    Dan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just throwing it out there, I know I'm a year.5 late on this but if it's a psuedo-modal dialog or some other window that you only want a single instance visible at one time, you can check the FP.State property on the strictly typed vi reference. If it's loaded and visible to the user it will be "Standard", if it was closed or not opened prior then the state will be "Closed".
I think the standard behavior of serializing execution on another thread would be great for doing a pre-set number of iterations with a sub vi in a non-blocking sort of way but for sub vi's meant for UI interaction checking FP.State works.

  • Script to find duplicate index and how can we tell if an index is REALLY a duplicate?

Does any one have script to find duplicate index? and how can we tell if an index is REALLY a duplicate?
    Rahul

One more written by Itzik Ben-Gan
The first query finds exact matches. The indexes must have
the same key columns in the same order, and the same included columns but in any order.
These indexes are sure targets for elimination. The only caution would be to check for index hints.
    -- exact duplicates
    with indexcols as
select object_id as id, index_id as indid, name,
(select case keyno when 0 then NULL else colid end as [data()]
    from sys.sysindexkeys as k
    where k.id = i.object_id
    and k.indid = i.index_id
    order by keyno, colid
    for xml path('')) as cols,
(select case keyno when 0 then colid else NULL end as [data()]
    from sys.sysindexkeys as k
    where k.id = i.object_id
    and k.indid = i.index_id
    order by colid
    for xml path('')) as inc
    from sys.indexes as i
    select
    object_schema_name(c1.id) + '.' + object_name(c1.id) as 'table',
    c1.name as 'index',
    c2.name as 'exactduplicate'
    from indexcols as c1
    join indexcols as c2
    on c1.id = c2.id
    and c1.indid < c2.indid
    and c1.cols = c2.cols
    and c1.inc = c2.inc;
The second variation of this query finds partial, or duplicate, indexes
    that share leading key columns, e.g. Ix1(col1, col2, col3) and Ix2(col1, col2)
would be considered duplicate indexes. This query only examines key columns and does not consider included columns.
These types of indexes are probable dead indexes walking.
    -- Overlapping indxes
    with indexcols as
select object_id as id, index_id as indid, name,
(select case keyno when 0 then NULL else colid end as [data()]
    from sys.sysindexkeys as k
    where k.id = i.object_id
    and k.indid = i.index_id
    order by keyno, colid
    for xml path('')) as cols
    from sys.indexes as i
    select
    object_schema_name(c1.id) + '.' + object_name(c1.id) as 'table',
    c1.name as 'index',
    c2.name as 'partialduplicate'
    from indexcols as c1
    join indexcols as c2
    on c1.id = c2.id
    and c1.indid < c2.indid
    and (c1.cols like c2.cols + '%'
    or c2.cols like c1.cols + '%') ;
Be careful when dropping a partial duplicate index if the two indexes differ greatly in width.
For example, if Ix1 is a very wide index with 12 columns, and Ix2 is a narrow two-column index
that shares the first two columns, you may want to leave Ix2 as a faster, tighter, narrower index.

  • How can I tell if my iPod touch is water damaged?

How can I tell if my iPod touch 5th generation is water damaged? It will not turn on or charge but I can't tell what is wrong with it.

Without cracking it open you really can't. This is a long shot, you could try drying it out. Do not attempt to charge or turn on, leave it off. Place it in a sealed bag of uncooked rice for about a week. change the rice every couple of days. After you dry it attempt to turn it on, you my need to charge it first, about 30 minutes. If it works great, if not you may need to reset or attempt to restore. And it may never work again, but for a couple of dollars of rice its worth trying. If you do get it to work the first thing you want to do is make a full backup to your computer. The thing with water damage is you just don't know how long it will continue to work.  If you go to Apple be prepared to spend some money, water damage is not covered with the standard warranty. Good luck, hope this helps. Cheers.

  • HT201364 how can i tell how old my macbook pro is?

how can i tell how old my mac book pro is?

To find out what Mac model you have, append the last three characters of its serial number to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page. If you're doing this to determine if it's compatible with Mavericks, the simplest way is probably to try downloading it; the Mac App Store will check.

  • How can i tell if i have flashback malware

How can I tell if I have the flashback malware? Will installing the latest security update get rid of the malware /virus and protect my computer?

Here's what I am suggesting as a rudimentary test for some of the known strains of the flashback trojans.  Open a terminal window and copy/paste each of the following lines hitting return after each one and note the results:
    defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment
    defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
    ls -la ~/Library/LaunchAgents
    grep "/Users/$USER/\..*" ~/Library/LaunchAgents/*
For the two defaults command if you get anything other than a "does not exist" error message post the results since you are almost certainly infected.
The third command, ls, just lists the contents of your LaunchAgents, if any.  That's additional info to be used in conjunction with the last grep command.  If the grep shows any results then that too may indicate infection and again post its results.

  • Buying 2nd hand iPhone 3GS. How can I tell it's not a 3G?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but never had/used an iPhone before. Thinking about buying a second hand iPhone 3GS.
    How can I tell if it's a 8gb, 16gb or 32gb and how can I tell it's not an iPhone 3G?
    Thanks

    Spiface,
If you can get a look at the back of the phone, here are some things to look for:
Is the Writing on the back of the phone in Silver or in Grey?
If it is Silver, then it is a 3GS.
16GB and 32GB models have the storage capacity printed on their backs. The current 8GB model does not have any storage capacity printed on its back, although you can still identify it as a 3GS if it has silver print.
    Hope this helps,
    David
