How can I tell if my airport card is working?

My slot loading imac has had an airport card functioning well for years. Currently is it on a wireless network via Airport Express shared with an airport connected ibook.
The ibook is connecting easily to the network. For two days the imac will not connect. When I go to the System Profiler on the imac , the airport card is recognized with Type, Locale, and Firmware Version, but the "current wireless network:" is listed as "wireless network is not available."
The Ibook's "current wireless network:" lists the correct name of my wireless network. Proximity is not the issue, I have the two computers sitting side by side.
I suspect this mean the wireless card is not functioning. I suppose it could also be a problem with the Imac's antenna. Are there other possible hardware or software problems? How would I troubleshoot the differences before buying a new airport card fot the Imac?
I am running 0S X 10.3.3 on both of the computers.
slot loading imac (tangerine)   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

Is the iMac connected to the wireless network? In
your menu bar, are the signal lines grayed out or are
they black. Click on your airport icon as make sure
you have you network selected.
Give that a try.
P.S. I would recommend updating to 10.3.9 as well.
The wireless signal is grayed out.
What do I get additionally with 10.3.9? What harware do I need to manage 10.3.9 on this older Imac?

  • How can I tell if my AirPort  is not working correctly?

I've been experiencing up and down internet speeds, from as high as 40 Mbps, to as low as .3 Mbps!  And since Sunday, the connection will just cut off!  When I close & open it, it comes back, but it cut out about four times within one day!
I've had the Charter cable guy out about four times, he's changed this and that, says the modem is new, and the router is working fine, but I still am having this issue.
The other person who lives  here, and has his computer in the same room as the router & modem hasn't had these issues, and I'm only two doors away on the same floor, so I'm beginning to think something could be wrong with my hardware. How would I check, since I am no longer on AppleCare....

It is a long shot in the dark, but look around to see if there is a portable phone base, TV or motorized appliance close to or in between your iMac and router. If so, try rearranging something to see if the drop outs stop and the signal strength improves.

The description of your machine (2 ghz MacBook) can describe maybe three different generations of the original polycarbonate MacBook.
If your machine is a Core 2 Duo MacBook that came out before the late 2007 models - $2.49 Canadian. It's all done in software, and won't work on the Core Duo models. The equivalent enabling software also comes on a disc if you get the latest 802.11n Apple AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express base stations.

Before you buy, you can check to see if your machine already has it.

  • How can I tell if my Airport extreme is actually running at "n" speed?

I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) with an attached HDD that I use for storing photos etc.
When I try to access the photos with my MBP it is extremely slow. (so slow and frustrating that I usually take the notebook and sit beside the HDD so I can plug it in directly ... not exactly convenient)
How can I tell if I'm getting the full performance out of the Airport Extreme?
I have an Airport Express that I use purely for iTunes. It is NOT an 802.11n model. Will the Airport Express force the Airport Extreme to run at 802.11g speeds even if it is only used for AirTunes?
Also I have two iPhones (3G and 3GS) in the apartment that connect to the WiFi network. If I upgrade my Airport Express to be 802.11n will I still get slower (g) network speeds because of the iPhones?
Is there any option other than upgrading to a Time Capsule?

Any non-"n" wireless client (including the 802.11g AirPort Express), connected to a "n" network, will reduce the overall available bandwidth for "n" devices. In addition, to allow these devices to connect, your network must operate on the 2.4 GHz radio ... which has a maximum "n" bandwidth of around 130 Mbps. The 5 GHz, with dual-channel enabled, would provide your "n" clients with 300+ Mbps.
Also I have two iPhones (3G and 3GS) in the apartment that connect to the WiFi network. If I upgrade my Airport Express to be 802.11n will I still get slower (g) network speeds because of the iPhones?
    Yes.
Is there any option other than upgrading to a Time Capsule?
Yes, you may want to consider reconfiguring your AirPorts for a dual-band network by connecting the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) directly to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet. In this configuration, you would have two separate wireless networks, one for the higher speed "n" clients and the other for the "g" clients.

  • How can I tell whether my airport extreme is a third or fourth generation and what's the difference?

Is there a desernable difference between the airport extreme third generation and fourth? How can you tell which one you have?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Extreme
Information about the device will be displayed in the area to the right
The 3rd Generation product was the first Apple simultaneous dual band router, introduced in March 2009. Minor changes were made in the chipsets between the 3rd Generation and 4th Generation versions with some antenna improvements added in the 4th Generation versions as well. The 4th Generation version was introduced in October 2009.

If there is a legal issue I am sure Apple would properly respond if the records were subpoenaed, but short of that I do not know of a way.

  • Diagnostic Mode: How can you tell if the scan disk is working?

I put my ipod into diagnostic mode and went to the scan hard drive utility. The problem is that does not seem to be working.
    I get the following message:

Does that mean the scan is in process or do I have to do something to start it?

Mine is doing exactly the same thing. Did you ever get the answer to your question?

  • [p7-1240] How can I tell which graphics cards will work with my motherboard?

I recently went through the nightmare of trying to install a Gigabyte GTX 650 in my PC. After a few days of struggling and scouring the internet for answers, I discovered that it is incompatible with the BIOS on my motherboard, and HP does not offer BIOS updates. I returned the card and am now looking for a new one, but I am unsure of which cards will work now, since my computer met all of the system requirements for the graphics card, and It stil ldid not work. Since GPU manufacturers do not list BIOS specs under system requirements, how can I tell if a graphics card will work with my sytem?
My computer is a p7-1240 with an upgraded 520W PSU and approximeately 11" of room to install the card.

    Thexn, welcome to the forum.
The problem is, many of the newer video cards require the computer to have a full UEFI BIOS.  HP began using one in mid-October, 2012.  Before this date the BIOS is Legacy.  This is why the video card didn't work with your computer.
I don't know what you want to spend for a card, but MSI makes a GTX 750ti that has a hybrid VBIOS.  It has a switch to change to Legacy or UEFI.  There is a video link directly below the picture of a card.  Paul from Newegg gives a full description of the card.
I like EVGA cards the best.  Their Tech Support has given me a lot of information about their cards.  However, you have to go back to a GT 640 card to find one of their cards that doesn't require the UEFI BIOS.  They do have some updates for their BIOS'es that solve the problem, but you have to call them for the exact cards.

  • HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8  Can't see base station.  Hard Reset the Airport.  Rebooted machine.  How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8.  Just installed Airport Express.  I can't see any base stations.  I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices,  turned them back on.   I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood.  How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem?  Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously,  I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

All Mac Pro's ever made have shipped with gigabit ethernet.  The last non-gigabit tower desktop Apple made was the very first generation PowerMac G4's back in 1999.
Similarly, all Time Capsules have been gigabit ethernet as well - never been one that was not.

32GB will work BUT you need to format it to FAT32.
Depending on what version of WIndows you have, you may need to get a third-party program or force it to format to FAT32.
    Here's one how-to.

Also, the Sansa firmware was made before there were such large storage cards, and it may not be able to show all the files on the card if you have a whole lot of small files.
That's because there is a limit on the size of the database, which reads information from the files--Artist, Album, Title, etc.--and makes an index from them. It will show thousands of songs, and I have filled a 32GB card and had it show every song.
But...there is a character limit on the size of that index, and many people have run up against it.  It's not an exact number of files; every letter makes a difference, so if your Artist listing is Rolling Stones rather than The Rolling Stones you might be able to show a few more files.
You can see if you have that problem when you use the card because your listings (Album, Artist) will stop before the end of the alphabet.
If you do have too many songs for the Sansa to show, you can get different firmware at www.rockbox.org  that can handle a much larger (possibly unlimited--I don't know) database. Read up on it before installing--it sits alongside the Sansa firmware so you can switch between them.

Does the bar showing used space have a portion labeled "Other"?
Usually other is files that have been copied to the iPod directly, or space you have told the iPod to reserve for other files by enabling disk use.
