How can I tell if my iPad's GPS is even attemping to get a position fix?

The main reason I purchased an iPad was to use it as backup for GPS navigation electronics aboard my boat. I've used it several times just to test it, with purchased nav apps, starting from my home port, and everything worked as expected. Recently I didn't power up the iPad until I was at sea but only 15 miles from home port. It could not seem to obtain a position fix, and the GPS arrow indicator did not appear. I had no way of knowing if it was even trying to get a fix. My other GPS devices at least tell me they're trying. Is there some way know if an iPad is even trying to get a first fix? When I returned home, I powered up the iPad and everything worked fine. All the location services settings and others, including wi-fi, were left untouched.
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?

The app is iNavX. The GPS and the app usually work just fine. But, as noted in my original posting, I had an incident where the GPS did not seem to activate. And I could not tell if there was some way to see if it was even trying to get a position fix. The GPS arrow didn't appear. More details in my original posting. My questions remain:
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?

There are no modern day consumer electronics that you can overcharge... they all have protection for this, i.e. they stop charging when full. This may not be completely true for some really cheap Chinese knock-offs.

I'm not really sure there is a way to tell, it certainly doesn't seem to be something you can set within the iPad so I'd assume that if a 5Ghz frequency is available it would use that, otherwise it would default to using a 2.4Ghz frequency instead. I'd also assume from having a 5Ghz router myself that there would be some sort of light on your router which will flash on/off when data is recieved so if iPad is your only 5Ghz device and it's sending/receiving data then this light should flash on your router.

You might hear a lot of things on the Internet but that doesn't make them true.
If you got a refurbished iPad from Apple it would be completely empty.
Refurbished iPads are identified on the packaging.
You can see the model number in Settings > Genera l> About > Model. The model number has a two-letter code, a number and some more letters. The last part stands for the country/region. The first letter can be "F" (refurbished), "M" (normal retail), or "P" (personalized / engraved).

( for what it's worth, after a while you get used to the on screen keyboard and don't really need the external.)

I have only used my iPad a few times so far, and the battery isn't down to zero, but I still worry that that battery isn't holding its charge because it seems that every time I look up @ the battery indicator it has gone down a point or two, something I don't notice with any other device. The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

As of now, there are no known viruses, or trojans or malware capable of affecting an iPad. Whatever you clicked on was likely just a hoax trying to get you to download something purporting to clean out whatever it was it said you were infected with, which itself would have had some virus or trojan in it.
As it stands, just ignore it.

The amount of storage that is shown on the box and in Settings are calculated differently - the package uses 1 billion bytes as a gig (i.e. decimal), whereas in Settings it's shown as the binary definition : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419
Also some space has been used for iOS, the built-in app and some space is lost due to formatting.

I recently purchased a the new (3rd gen) Verizon WiFi/4G iPad. When I activate the cellular service, all that I see on the screen is Verizon and the bars for signal strength. How can I tell if I am receiving 4G or 3G data?

My understanding is that when you start it up that you will have service for at least one month. The other thing to be aware of is the two types of deactivating your account. You can see my post in the iPad 2 forum. But basically, you can suspend or cancel your account when you don't want to use the data plan. If you suspend your account, it will automatically start up again after a specific period of time unless you know to and remember to resuspend your account. The advantage of suspending it is that you can activate and deactivate on the web. If you cancel the account it will not start up again automatically, but I believe you have to call to start up the data plan.
