  • How can I tell if my iPod touch is water damaged?

How can I tell if my iPod touch 5th generation is water damaged? It will not turn on or charge but I can't tell what is wrong with it.

Without cracking it open you really can't. This is a long shot, you could try drying it out. Do not attempt to charge or turn on, leave it off. Place it in a sealed bag of uncooked rice for about a week. change the rice every couple of days. After you dry it attempt to turn it on, you my need to charge it first, about 30 minutes. If it works great, if not you may need to reset or attempt to restore. And it may never work again, but for a couple of dollars of rice its worth trying. If you do get it to work the first thing you want to do is make a full backup to your computer. The thing with water damage is you just don't know how long it will continue to work.  If you go to Apple be prepared to spend some money, water damage is not covered with the standard warranty. Good luck, hope this helps. Cheers.

  • How can i tell if my ipod touch is second or third generation?

How can I tell if my iPod Touch is third generation or second generation?  I thought it was third, but now not sure. The model number is PB531LL if that helps.

If it is 8gb then it is not a third gen.
Look at the link above to identify your ipod.

  • How can you tell if an iPod touch has the new apps?

Having seen the updates to the ipod Touch I'm finally ready to buy one. From the keynote I gather that new units shipping from the factory after 15 Jan have the new software, old units do not and, unusually for apple, even if you buy an old software unit after the announcement, you don't get the software for free. Worse still, I'm in one of those countries they sell the touch, but don't have an iTunes store, so if I buy an old one, I'm stuck with it, cannot upgrade.
Is there any way to tell from the box which version you have, change in part number, anything? I'm sure they aren't doing the M$ sticker approach "now with 1.1.3 and lots of new apps". The return policy out here in Singapore is basically you can't, so I need to figure out in the store if the box I'm buying is new, or old, and I have no clue at all how much stock is left out there.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello,
If you're going to buy in a real shop then why not have the retailer open the box for you. Especially if they don't do returns - that's a must.
The next suggestion is a little more hit-and-miss but the fourth and fifth digits of the Serial Number are the week of production. If you get a week 02 or later it should be okay. Perhaps someone with a brand new one could confirm.

  • How can I tell if my iPod touch needs its battery replaced or if there is something wrong with the power connector?

About 3 weeks ago, I got pushed into a pool, fully clothed, with my iPod touch in my back pocket.  Miraculously, I was able to salvage it (or so I thought) by putting it for a couple of days in a dessicator jar and then recharging it.  It seemed all right until a few days ago, when it began having more difficulty being recognized as connected when I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro, my wall charger or my USB port in my car.  Last night it was working and I was able to play it in my car and to successfully sync it.  I surfed on it for awhile then forgot to plug it in before I went to bed.  The battery indicator was in the red when I woke up, so I connected it to my wall charger.  When I came back, it was right where it was - no charging, and moving it to a new outlet and changing cables did not help.  So, I tried hooking back up to my laptop, same thing.  I tried my husband's wall charger; still no connection.  I then tried hooking it up to the USB port in my car, but it sees no connection.  If it weren't for the fact that it got dunked, I'd assume that the battery needs replaced, but because of that, I fear it might be something more complicated.  Does anyone know if there is a way I can test this?  I'd hate to go get the battery replaced, only to discover that it still doesn't work.
    Thanks!

Apple does not replace your battery.  Instead it replaces your old iPod with a refurbished one (with a new battery).  When they see your iPod, the can tell that it had been in the water and will probably offer you an out-of-warranty repair ($99-$199).  If you want to take a chance on just replacing the battery, Google for a third party repair shop, but in that case, the risk is all yours.

  • How can I tell if my iPod touch 5 is jailbroken?

I Don't know if I jailbroke my device or if this can cause a jailbrake but I downloaded a jailbroken app, it was meant to be downloaded by jailbroken devices not non-jailbroken devices so I downloaded it on my iPod and I haven't jailbroken my iPod and it download fine and I was able to use it. But a couple mins later my iPod started running slow then it turned itself off and I'm not sure if it's jailbroken now. My iPod seems to be working fine though and I'm currently running iOS 8.0.2 and I really don't want to restore my device Because when I did last time I lost all my data on most of my apps.

The app itself should not do a jailbreak unless it is something like Cydia...it would be a good idea to delete the app and reboot the Touch by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears.

  • How can I tell if the iPod is updating?

I just installed the new version 7 of the Itunes Software. Once I ran the new software, it told me that my iPod has to be updated. I clicked on the "udate" button, and it searched for the server. Once connected, it appears to be "downloading" accept for the status bar has nothing going on in it. The only thing that is happening is to the left there is the little wheel with the arrows spinning where it says "downloads" in the left margin. I have a dial-up connection. Does anyone know how long this should take to download? Is it actually downloading since there is nothing in the "status" bar? If I don't download this, will my iPod still work right without this Update Instalation? Help!

  • How can I tell if my ipod touch turns on?

My screen is broken -- with ink coming out of it. How do I know if it turns on so that I only buy a screen replacement?

the only way I can think of is to connect it to your computer and if it syncs correctly then that suggests that the 'guts' are fine.
I'd just be careful however because you're sending an amount of current through a broken device, and if you have 'ink' or mositure or something leaking out....well current and moisture don't mix well.

  • How Can I tell if My iPod Touch Has a Screen problem?

Will it be pretty obvious, or is it just something that I wouldn't notice if I didn't watch a lot of dark videos?

From my knowledge of LCD is they are a back light technology that lets light through the LCD panel. When the display is supposed to be black on any part the LCD should simply block all light from getting through the LCD. That being the case, the screen that displays all your application is all black except the applications. If the LCD is defective the black area on this screen should look gray as well not just video you play. Since no one that I can recall in this forum has described the problem of the blacks not being black on the screen except in the video application, it sounds like a software problem either in the application or in the actual video itself. Does anyone see the problem in a photo??

  • Help Please! How can I tell what is stored on my iPod?

I just recently got a new iPod Nano, and started using iTunes to upload music to it. But, for some reason, I can only fit like 60 or so songs onto it. I have a 1 GB Nano. If I click onto my iPod in iTunes, it says at the bottom of the screen that I have 59 songs, 3.2 hrs of music, 223.2 MB, but just above that, where the bar is that shows how much is stored to my iPod, it says I have used 750.5 MB and have 142.1 MB free. Where is the other 527.3 MB being used and how can I tell? Is it being used in the games? I have no pics or videos at all on my iPod. It's getting very frustrating because I can't fit very much at all on my 1GB Nano. Help!

    sussan-b,
Does the bar showing used space have a portion labeled "Other"?
Usually other is files that have been copied to the iPod directly, or space you have told the iPod to reserve for other files by enabling disk use.

  • How can i tell what generation of ipod shuffle I have?

We have various ipods and I need to know what generation of ipod shuffle we have.  How can if tell?

This document about resetting the iPod shuffle shows a picture of the four types.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
1st gen - It is white plastic and looks like a USB "thumb drive."  It as a full USB connector on it, so you don't need a cable to connect it to the computer.
2nd gen - It is a clip-on design.  It has separate switches for setting playback order (shuffle or in order) and for turning ON/OFF.
3rd gen - It is a narrow clip-on design, with no playback control buttons on the shuffle itself.  You use the "remote control" buttons on the ear buds cord.  It has the new VoiceOver feature.
4th gen - Apple went back to the 2nd gen style, except smaller.  It has only one switch that is both for setting playback order (shuffle or in order) and turning ON/OFF, plus a small VoiceOver button (for using the VoiceOver feature introduced in 3rd gen)
