How can I tell what is using up the space on my hard drive?
My computer has been messing up for a while, giving me the message "startup disc almost full". I only have 4 gb free space now, after throwing all my photos and music onto external drive. What is making my disc so full? All the rest of my files are text? How can I figure out what is taking up so much space? Thanks
Moving iTunes music is more involved than a simple
drag and drop affair; you would be making copies on
some other media, but could be leaving duplicates or
originals on the hard drive in the process. Same with
images and iPhoto derived items. There are some
Apple Support documents on how to manage these.
The user folder has things in it you have installed;
generally your saved items would be found in there. -
How can I tell what is taking up space on my HD
I am a PC switcher. Even though it has been over a year it is still new to me. I noticed today that my hard drive only has 8.5 gig left on it. I find that hard to beleive. Neverthless, how can I find out what is taking up the bulk of my space? Is there a utility or something?
Also, I know I have some movies, in my ituns. Can I put the movies on my external and keep the music on my HD?Basically, the DMGs if any are just a shot in the dark. I store stuff on my Mac as .dmg files, it's just a disk image. But unless you use the sparse method you 'might' end up creating a DVD image with only a few files on. So you have 4.38GB which is as far as the finder is concerned is accounted for even if it's unused.
We need to see where the space is being taken up. Open finder window and have it so your home folder and its contents are open. You can do a get info on each, (select and press command-I) or use the inspector which I find better when browsing. Select say your desktop, then press and hold Command and Option?Alt and then press I.
At the moment my home folder is;
Desktop 6.4Mb
Docs 376 KB
Downloads 58.6MB
Library 139 MB
Movies 160KB
Music 3.8MB
Pictures 306.9MB
Public 0KB
Sites 40KB.
Now my music and important data are on a separate internal drive so that if I have to take the Mac in for repairs or do a complete erase and reinstall of the OS then the data is untouched.
Also, shutdown and restart. then once started up open Activity Monitor and see if anything has eaten drive space that you use or whether its hidden activity.
Anything not look right to you on yours?

How can I tell what is taking up all my memory?
My macbook has around 75 GB of memory and I have around 5 GB free. I don't keep large amounts of music or pictures/videos on here. I don't have a ton of apps either. I have a dropbox folder that is around 6GB. How can I figure out where all the space is being taken up?
Well, start by highlighting everything in Macintosh HD.
Then on the keyboard hit Command + i, or just right click on a folder / sidebar, and click Get Info, 1 by 1, or all at once. Your choice.
This will bring up the Get Info, telling you the size of the individual folders.
You can then move into the biggest one & narrow it down even more. -
My one year old macbook pro is full already. : ( How can I see what's taking up all the space? I cannot download anymore pictures. It's running slower than usual.
OmniDiskSweeper (free) - http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
Archive files onto other media until your hard drive has at least 10% of its total size free, or at least 15+ GB at all times. -
How can I tell what the iTunes build is before I download?
I am having difficulty finding out what the iTunes build is for the current download from the Apple site. I am running iTunes 7.6 (29); I assume the "29" is the build for my installed version. I also assume that Software Update will ignore build changes unless the version changes.
I do not want to download and install the current iTunes build unless it is different from my currently installled app. How can you tell what the specific version and build are from the Apple download site?
Thanks!I am running iTunes on Leopard.

How can I tell what app makes up the "usage"?
Under General Settings, you have the option to view usage. How can I tell what app is using that "usage"? It is not data, just time active.
Go to the AppleStore and download BatteryDoctor.
This will help you to see which apps take a lott of your battery level. -
Upgraded to IO6, seems like the amount of system memory to run is higher, this causes issues with some Apps. I can't get SIRI to work because the amount of free system memory is not enough. how can I tell what is eating the system memory?
