How Can I tell what program is asking to update?

I keep getting a message that a program needs administrators permission to update. I have no idea what program could be updating so rather than sign in I cancel. Periodically the message pops up again. I don't want to install something I shouldn't. Is there a way to find out what program is trying to update?

Hello Bobng,
It sounds like the Mac App store has an update ready for one of your apps and you want to know which app it is. You can see what updates are available in the Mac App store with this article:
OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1338
Choose Apple () menu > Software Update – If prompted, enter an admin name and password.
The App Store opens and displays any software updates available for OS X and Mac App Store apps. OS X updates will be at the top of the list. Note: Opening the App Store by clicking its Dock icon will only show Mac App Store app updates.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Sterling

You can see which apps are open and/or recently used by double-clicking the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the screen (not all apps that appear there are active) - you can then close apps on it by pressing and holding one of them for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar. If you have an app 'open' on-screen then it won't appear on the taskbar, you will need to go back to the homescreen first, and it should then show when you next open the taskbar.
If you haven't already got a copy then you can download the iPad manual from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

  • How can I tell what the iTunes build is before I download?

I am having difficulty finding out what the iTunes build is for the current download from the Apple site. I am running iTunes 7.6 (29); I assume the "29" is the build for my installed version. I also assume that Software Update will ignore build changes unless the version changes.
I do not want to download and install the current iTunes build unless it is different from my currently installled app. How can you tell what the specific version and build are from the Apple download site?
    Thanks!

I am running iTunes on Leopard.

  • How can I tell what app makes up the "usage"?

Under General Settings, you have the option to view usage. How can I tell what app is using that "usage"? It is not data, just time active.

Go to the AppleStore and download BatteryDoctor.
This will help you to see which apps take a lott of your battery level.
