Imagine this scenario, can't be that unlikely:
I'm going away on holiday, or away on work for a while, and I'm not taking the computer to which I sync my phone. Before I leave I fill my iPhone up with music to take with me. While I'm travelling I want to install a new app, but I don't have space. I look to delete content from the phone - I can delete podcasts but not music. Unfortunately I don't have enough podcasts to free up space that way. So I don't purchase the app I wanted.
This is bad for:
1. The user (me)
2. The app developer - lost download.
3. Apple - they lose their cut of the app download, and royally p#@* off a user.

If you synced your iPhone with the same iTunes library on the same computer you have been syncing your iPhone with, not sure how some of the music was lost. If you tried to sync your iPhone with a different iTunes library on another computer, all iTunes content on your iPhone would have been erased first, not just some.
All iTunes content on your iPhone including all music should be in your iTunes library on your computer.

You can download all previous purchases to any device ascociated to your account, just go in the iTunes app on your device and go to the more section then to the purchases and find your desired purchase to redownload. Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD) - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.

Sorry, but Apple cannot help you with this one. All of us here are only end users like yourself anyways. You'll have to look for it like any other lost device. You could/should report the indicent to the police and/or talk to parents about the situation.

How can I transfer songs from my iPhone without wiping the iPhone?

I have two computers. My original is a basic Dell that's really getting old and the other is a new one I custom built a year ago. My first computer, which I had all my iTunes stuff on, has started dying so I've decided to transfer all my music and iTunes over to the new computer. I transfered all my songs from iTunes over to the new computer (after re-downloading iTunes) and then popped in my iPhone.
The issue is this: the new iTunes library is missing 200 songs that my iPhone has. Well, whatever, I figured I'd just sync it. But if I sync from my phone to the new computer it wipes out my phone and gives me the stuff in iTunes, so then I'm out 200 songs. So I tried hitting "Manually Sync this phone". Same thing, if I try and hit apply it says it'll wipe out my phone because it's already synced to the old computer.
Is there a way to un-sync my phone from the old computer, or a way that I can move my music from the phone over to the new computer without wiping it?
