Kindle books to the best of my knowledge don't sync via iTunes. Unless I've missed something, there is no way to transfer a Kindle book from the iPad directly to the computer; Amazon has designed things so that each device gets content individually (and syncs bookmarks, etc) from Amazon's servers. You can probably confirm this, or find out how to do the transfer, in Amazon's Kindle forums:

You should be able to accomplish this by taking a look at the following articles. The first step before you plug in your iPhone is to turn off the automatic syncing. Then after that go to media on your iPhone and then export the playlist of each one then do an import after you are done. The articles below will assist with these processes. The steps will be similar on both a Mac and on Windows.

Meg, thanks but these are Science Fiction books from Baen Books directly. I realize I could go back to the publisher and redownload them but there are 100+ books and I'd like to avoid that. What I'd prefer to do is to find where they are on the IPad and then copy them to my PC and then be able to copy them back to the replacement iPad.

if the music was downloaded via iTunes you will be able to access it from iCloud when you set up the new device. other music that was synced to the iPhone would need to be synced to the new iPhone from the computer that you used to sync the iPhone 4.
photos can be transferred via the following method.
plug iPhone 4 into iTunes on computer. select back up to computer.
Plug in the iPhone 6 and press restore. when setting up the iPhone press restore from iTunes. plug into computer and a complete copy of the iPhone 4 will be put onto the iPhone 6. except for the music...(you will have to download your apps again from App Store but you can find them all under the purchased tab on App Store. you won't have to pay for the apps again)
please note this will delete the current memory on iPhone 6
