How can I transfer downloaded music to iTunes?
Since the last major itunes update, I am unable to transfer recently downloaded music not from an iTunes store. Similarly, I am unable to download books to iBooks that were not purchased from the iTunes store.
Is this a deliberate attempt by to restrict the use of iTunes to only iTunes store purchases?

No.

Correct. You can only download iBook store purchases using iBooks.
To add other items to iBooks, File > Add to library

Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again. -

Hello, thank you for your prompt answer. I did have an idea that Home sharing might be the answer but could not quite figure out how to do it. I have enabled home sharing in my iTunes account, put in username and password, clicked on creat etc. But the homs sharing icon doew not appear in the left side of iTunes. So I got stuck. Any further ideas?

You should be storing everything on your computer. Just sync it to the iPhone of your choice from your computer.

Did you fail to maintain a backup copy?
If so, then you can buy a third party program to extract the music not purchased from itunes.

Copy the entire iTunes folder from \Users\<User>\Music on the old drive into your music folder on the new computer.

I have an IPhone 5, and of course I have used ITunes. My Computer has been completely destroyed, so I have to Purchase a new one. How can I transfer my music from my iPhone to my New PC?
The way I do it is I hook to my windows computer, it will pop up iTunes. I click iTunes off. The phone will show as another drive on your computer. Click it open then migrate to the photos folder from the iPhone.
Then select all, cut then right click on your pictures folder on your computer or make a new folder on your desk top like I do and right click on new folder and select paste.
Photos will be gone. Just remember to turn off the iPhone sync in your photos folder on the phone or they will come back

You'll need to copy the music from the old iPod back to iTunes first before you can transfer it to your new iPod.
