How can I transfer files from an old Mac onto my new one?

As outlined on this thread, I am trying to get data from my 1995 Performa 630 to my recently delivered MacBook Pro.  All suggestions gratefully received.
Also, are ClarisWorks files instantly readable by modern office software, or do I need to save in RTF or some other format, first, on the older machine?

Hi...
Your new MacBookPro has Mac OS X Lion v10.7.x installed on an Intel processor and cannot open or read ClarisWorks files as such.
However, you may be able to reformat to RTF >  AppleWorks: Document Recovery Techniques
The issue is going to be migrating files since you can't use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac

How do I transfer from my old ipod to my new ipod

You can't transfer it directly.  If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library.  Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

All of your music should be in itunes on your computer.  If it is not, then put it there.
You can then sync it to the ipod.

  • How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new one?

I just purchased a new Mac Mini. I have an iBook that is about 5 years old. I want to transfer all of my files (including music and photos) to my new computer. How do I do that?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you know which version of Mac OS is installed on your iBook? You can find out by choosing "About This Mac" from the Apple menu. Using a FireWire cable with the Migration Assistant (as Dal suggested) will be the best method. But, you'll have to be using Mac OS X 10.1 or newer to transfer all your files automatically.

  • How can I transfer songs from my old Ipod to my new one?

I just bought a new ipod video from apple and I would like to transfer all of my songs from my old 3rd generation ipod to my new one, how can I do this?

Download iRip, the program will detect your iPod then select "recover". If you have a firewire connection this will be fast. If you have a new iPod then you'll wait a little longer for your music to be ripped. When everything's recovered you eject the old iPod and connect the new one, drag'n drop, voilá. Don't forget to get rid of your music once you are sure it's installed -and maybe backuped in a external hard drive- so your computer memory won't be affected.
I use mac, I'm noticing that you are windows, if this don't work, google "rip ipod" and you'll find something there. Hope it works!

  • How can I transfer elements from an old document to a new one?

    Hi everybody,
I'm quite new to InDesign and not really from this area, so I'm having a tough time learning how to use it. My first project is what I first thought would be simple for a start: a recipe book. So I started using different master pages for different categories - meat, fish, soups, etc. - and had my first problem when finding out it is not a good idea to have text frames in the master page, cause everytime I change something there and apply it to the others, it kind of messes up the existing pages and I get lots of duplicated frames. it got so messed up I figured the best thing would be to start a completely new document (I also found out I had the wrong margins and can use a normal A4 with bleed, and no bigger-sized page, as I'd done).
Now I decided to start the whole thing over again, but I don't want to start from zero. So how can I:
    1) import my existing gradients?
    2) import my character styles and colors?
    3) import my texts? (I guess this is not very difficult, so I figure I can find out, but please tell me if there are any "tricks", cause I'm thinking of exporting my doc as txt and copy-pasting.)
I'm sorry if this has already been posted in this forum or can be found in the help-section, but I swear I have looked for it and couldn't find it...
    Thanks already in advance!

    easiest are steps 1) and 2) :)
make copy of your document, add new blank page on the end, select all pages without last - click delete icon :)
    next - delete all MasterPages
next - redefine page size, margins, add MasterPages, etc.
now - you can copy&paste your texts from old document :)

  • What's the easiest way to transfer files from an old Mac to a new one?

Alright, when I originally purchased my Macbook Pro in 2006 - I had no intentions on replacing for many, many years to come. However, purchased the 17", to have more screen space for design, and that career sort of fell through. I don't have a need for such a large display, and it gets very heavy when carrying it around. I've recently decided to opt for the 13" Macbook. Now my question is, what is the easiest, fastest, and safest was to transfer the files that I do want, from the old to the new? I considered buying an external hard-drive? And for that matter, once I do get everything transferred - does Mac offer anything where I can basically set the old on back to factory defaults?
    Help is much appreciated.

    In addition..........
If you have a High-speed connection, the easiest & fastest way is through AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) or any IM that has file transfers.
iChat has the same ability of transferring large files as AIM.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=150934
    Adium has file transfers.
    Yahoo Messenger has file transfers.
Both computers must use the same IM program for file transfers.

  • How do I move apps from an old mac to a new one

I am purchasing a new Macbook Pro after having my old one for six years. I have numerous apps that I have purchased and downloaded over the years. I don't want to loose them and really don't want to have to purchase them again. Can I and how can I move apps from my old Mac to my new one?

Be sure you back your current system up BEFORE you do anything. If you use Time Machine, migration assistant works well.

How do I transfer files from my old iMac to my new Pro laptop?

If you can get both computers on the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have the connection infrastructure needed to enable file sharing and share those files.
That said, many users find it easier to use FireWire Target Disk mode to treat the old computer as a big Hard drive, and just drag and drop the files, or use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistent.
