How can I transfer my itunes library from one computer to another?

I have my itunes on my laptop which is dying. The cdrw drive is broken so I cannot make a backup copy of itunes. Therefore, I would like to transfer my itunes into my new desktop computer which has a DVD-RW drive. This way I will be able to backup my itunes once it is transferred onto the desktop. I have a 1GB flash USB drive. Could I use this to transport the itunes data from the laptop to the desktop? Any other suggestions? I have about 2GB of songs on my itunes on the laptop. I also have about 1GB of podcasts and video podcasts. Will this transfer also? THank

These article reference using an iPod, but really they apply to almost any removable storage you want to use like an external hard drive or a USB thumb drive.

  • How can I transfer my iTunes library from one Mac to another Mac?

I have an old Mac book and purchased an air.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • How can I transfer my iTunes data from one computer to another? PS. My old computer won't turn on

I Recently bought a new computer and I need to transfer all my iTunes data from my old computer to the new one, how can I do that? And by the way, my old computer won't turn on

    Hello Nousernamebrah
Well get get your music from your old computer to your new computer, the old computer would have to work and turn on to access the files to be copied over. You also can access any previous purchased music and download it to your new computer as well. Check out the articles below for more information.

  • How Do I Transfer my iTunes Library from one computer to another?

I am getting a new computer and want to transfer my iTunes. How do I do this?
Also, do I need to do something to tell my iPod that this new computer is now its "home" computer?
Last, will this affect my licensing agreement? (It should not count as one of the 5 computer transfers, since it is still my computer (eg not transfering to someone else))
    Thank you

Jolly Giant hasn't posted in around a year...
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.
