Well the applications you should leave alone as they install files elsewhere that are needed like preferences etc that won't be on the external drive if you attempt to run it from there.
Some programs are completely self contained and will run just fine from a external drive, but applicaiton's are usually small.
Now your user files! That could use some thinning for sure! Especially stuff you don't use that often and Video files which take up a lot of space.
You can buy a external USB drive at any office / computer supply store and just plug it in and backup files via drag and drop.
What happens when you plug in a drive is TimeMachine will pop up and ask to make it a TimeMachine drive, this just backups up everything on your computer to restore from in case your OS X or boot drive fails. It's a image of your drive and so whatever is on the boot drive is on the TM drive. So that doesn't server your purpose which is you want to free some space off your main boot drive.
However you should get another drive and allow TM to do it's thing to that drive, also to make a hold option bootable clone of your boot drive (using yet another external drive) using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper so in case your boot drive fails you can quickly and easily boot off the clone and have a working machine right away.

Yes. You need to update the software.
If it is a first gen ipod touch then you can buy 3.1 here:

Many times I need to turn off my computer but I have many things open. A friend tells me to use <sleep> but sometimes I have to still turn off my computer for a reason. Is there a way to create a list of all the open applications and files that when I turn on my computer I know where I last worked? Thank you Smokerz and ademsemir. I like alot both ideas that you have. Sometimes I will use one and sometimes I will use the other one. Maybe I can explain better what I am thinking to do. If I have 4 applications that I am using and different files in applications I hope to make a list of everything. I use Excel, Word, Preview, and Mail all the time. If I leave open emails when I close Mail then the same emails will open when I run Mail the next time. That is perfect for me. Excel, Word, and Preview only show the recent files I use if I close the applications and use them later. If I use shiftcommand4 it helps me alot because I click on Window and take a picture of the open files. I like shiftcommand3 also it helps if I use Expose and take a picture of the screen but the files with long names will cut off.
I try also Activity Monitor and Force Quit because they show me applications that I use but they do not show the files. If I have alot of things open in Firefox that I will use again but do not have time I use Bookmark All Tabs.

Look for them on your old computer, when found copy the files to a USB drive and move them to the new computer.

You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.

THE use of the apple support is a mess also.
I want to be able to use my MAC fully and easily like I used to with Snow Leopard.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

I don't think that GarageBand can use wmas, but there's always good old conversion, and GarageBand can definitely use mp3s. Personally, I recommend media.io for stuff like this, but of course it depends on the size of your files. Otherwise I don't know that there's anyway to get GarageBand to work with them...

No. iOS devices do not support file transfers between non-iOS devices over Bluetooth.
They probably wouldn't work anyway, as iOS ringtones have to be in a specific format.

going to "transfer purchases' does work - however the thermometer bar at the bottom reflecting apps, music, video, book, etc cpapcity fraks out, sliding left to right maybe 4 or 5 times during the process. Have you ever seen this?
After it is finished, the SYNC button is not longer darkened - so I thought it was safe to attampt an upgrade to OS05... which i am doing now... takes maybe 20 mins and then I normally get the error "the applications on this ipad cannot be verified" and the bottom thermometer bar zeros out all by my music. The content and apps are all fine on teh ipad. so strange. I made an appointment with customer service tomrrow AM - but i do not think i should have to pay for this - i have never even used support before!
I will update if it works - or re[eats the strange pattern again and does not update.

Finally figured it out...
1) Open mail/compose notes on your macbook...
2) copy and paste every note from Outlook to a new note in Mail.
3) Open iTunes. In Info/Advanced tick Notes. This will replace / copy all Notes from Mail to your iPhone...
4) Voila! Notes are on iPhone...
I must say in spite of all the fabulous advantages of a Macbook and an iPhone, syncing really does suck...
Transferring data from another smartphone to a Mac or an iPhone is tough...
Features like "one way / two way" sync for Phone / computer or allowing us to select which whose, phone or computer, will be considered more important so that you can choose whose data will overwrite the other, are not there in iTunes... This is something which really needs to be there...
Anyways... problem solved for now...
