How can I transfer songs from Ipod to Itunes library?

I recently lost my entire Itunes library but still had songs on my Ipod. Now when I try to rebuild my library by transferring songs FROM my Ipod TO the Itunes library, I am unable to. There are a million help subjects of how to transfer your songs from the library to the ipod but none about how to transfer them back and I can't figure it out. Please help!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

Your question has probaby been answered already because it was posted a month ago but anyways what you do is you plug your phone into your computer. Next you want to open iTunes and click on File. Then you go down to "Transfer Purchases from *your name* iPhone". Then just wait for it to sync and you should be good.

For the future, keep in mind that an iPod is not a backup/storage device. It is designed to be strictly a playback device. It is up to you to backup your personal data, including music, to a local, external HDD.

i opened my itunes one day and all 654 of my songs were GONE. the entire itunes was blank, as if it was newly installed. it wasn't.

okay, well it has been a long time since i have done this, but i will try to do it to the best of my memory.
uninstall itunes.
then reinstall it.
plug your ipod in.
a box will pop up that says something like would you like to connect your ipod to this library?
click NO.
then, on the sidebar there should be a boldfaced DEVICE sign.
your ipod should show up.
go to summary
then check managely manage my music, and then update.
this means that when you plug your ipod in, you will have to put the music in yourself. this is good because you can pick and choose, and you can delete songs off your ipod if you do not like it anymore. also, you have the ability to play the music on your computer when your ipod is plugged in. hope that helps..

any itunes purchased music can be transferred from phone to pc via hitting the "transfer purchases" option when u right click on the phone under devices in itunes on the computer when it is plugged in. any non-itunes purchased music is stuck on the phone and cannot be transferred to the computer. u will have to load it onto the computer from the original source or from the old computer.
