How can I triple boot with OSX, Windows XP, and Windows 7 RC?

Here's the short story:
I have OS X 10.5 and Windows XP on an internal drive.
My goal is to install the Windows 7 RC on a bootable external drive connected through eSATA
Currently:
I used Winclone to copy my XP partition (with a different-looking desktop) onto the external drive to test if I could boot from it. Seems the EFI boot sequence recognizes the external copy in any case. Picture here: [http://img171.imageshack.us/i/library5991.jpg> (ignore the backup hard drive)
When I select the Windows icon on the left, it boots the internal drive partition. However, when I select the icon on the right, it also boots the internal partition.
Is there any way I can manipulate the BIOS emulation to chose between the two drives? Would clearing the internal Windows partition let it default to the external one? Would just installing Windows 7 RC resolve the issue?

Hi KWarp,
here a guide on how-to triple boot OSX, XP and Vista http://guides.macrumors.com/Triple_Boot
Replacing Vista with Windows 7 should be no difference.
To my knowledge Windows can not be booted from an external harddisk and I don't think that Microsoft has changed that with Windows 7 (although I like to be wrong on that ).
Intel-Macs don't have a BIOS but use its successor EFI.
Tools for 'fumbling' with EFI are restricted to Apple Technicians.

Stefan

  • Can't Safe Boot with 10.6.2 and GTX 285

Can't safe boot with 10.6.2 and NVIDIA GTX 285 (2009 Mac Pro).
What the heck am I supposed to do, take out the graphics card every time I want to safe boot?!
    Suggestions please!

No, I think what it is, is that the GTX 285 drivers somehow are being treated as 3rd party extensions not to be loaded on a safe boot, but the problem is that without those drivers, even if I switch my monitor over to my GT 120 card, it still won't boot. Ugh.
I am considering reinstalling 10.6 over on top of my current system, then putting the 10.6.2 on top of that. If I do this, do I risk losing any preferences or having to reinstall any 3rd-party software? At this point, I'll happily reinstall whatever it takes... I just didn't want to have to do a clean system where I have to track down every single bookmark file and saved preference for my main apps, but it could be this is now starting to take more time than it simply would have to do that from the get-go. Sigh.

Im switching email accounts on my itunes account am the computer isnt recognizing purchases made from my other account on the new one (apps). How can I sign in with my new account and get the purchases apps on both accounts?

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:
    http://tinypic.com/r/107quxu/7
As you can see, the stuff circled in red doesn't give me an option to download from Cloud Beta because it already says "downloaded".
any way to get around that?

    - The iTunes backup that iTunes makes included photos in the camera roll. If yo go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices what is the date of the backup? Is it when the photos were on the iPod? You have to restore from that backup.
    - What may have happened is that you backup the iPod after you restored the iPod but before restoring from backup. iTunes only keeps one backup and overwrites the previous backup with the changes.

  • Triple Booting OX + OSX + Windows XP

I read the Boot Camp manual on page 9 and apparently I misread it thinking it was possible to partition your Mac drive into three partitions and then install Windows on one of them. Apparently it referred to internal disks, not internal partitions which I got mixed up.
Anyway I have already partitioned my hard drive into three partitions with OSX installed on the first two.
The last partition is Mac OS Extended, but nothing is on it.
Can I still install Windows on it even though Boot Camp says I can not?
Is it possible to backup Partition 2 (OSX) to a disk image, then merge the partitions to one drive, then install Boot Camp, and then split the OSX partition back to two partitions?
If Disk Utility would not do the trick, what program might allow me to do that?
    Thanks for any help.

Apparently Disk Utility was able all by itself to resize the first partition and then add a second partition between OSX and Windows, after I installed Windows XP.
I just resized the first partition, added a new one called Mac 2, and clicked on apply and it was as simple as that!
It's on days like this when Apple's software "simply works" that I am elated to own a Macbook.
My next computer will be a Mac Mini to replace my 4-year-old Dell Dimension.
    Way to go Apple.

  • Can I dual boot with MAC OS/X and Windows

What is the best way to configure a dual boot on my MAC Bookpro laptop? Also, can I dual boot Windows 8 and MAC OS?

The first alternative is a dual-boot arrangement between OS X and Windows provided with OS X.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How can I video chat with a Windows user?

I just bought an iSight and have created an AIM account. I am trying to video chat with family who have Windows, a Logitech camera and also use AIM or MSN Messenger. We are unable to successfully chat. I can only see myself on the video. Can you please tell me if it is even possible to chat across platforms or are we out of luck?
    Thanks
    Laura

my mother is on a PC and i gave up trying to connect with her via iChat and AOHell. my solution was:
    http://www.yakforfree.com/
thats the only way i can talk to my fam back home. it is easy, works without a hitch. occassionally the audio can be a little choppy, but if you need to you can also connect via skype for the sound:
    http://skype.com/
(which doesnt have video for mac yet)
AIM used to work fine before they released triton. i expressed some frustration in this thread:

and i encourage everyone to contact apple feedback:

and tell them to make their own cross platform version of iChat.
    good luck everyone.

  • How can I dual-boot Mac OSX and Linux Mint?

Hey guys, I was wondering if it is possible to dual-boot both OS's similar to OS X and Windows 7/8...but first I'm wondering if it will void my MacBook Air Warranty (w/ AppleCare) as ultimately it wouldn't be worth it then!
    Thanks!

Which CD are you trying to use?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) originally came on DVD.
A media exchange program initially was available:
    http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/TigerMediaExchangeFormv5.pdf
So maybe you did an exchange for CDs?

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

How can I return to use OSX (Yosemite) after installing Windows 8.1?
I cannot find Boot Camp on my iMac (late 2013) with windows installed. So I downloaded it, but I cannot run it because of an error (x64...). I tried to use my USB stick with bootcamp installed but nothing. When I turn my iMac on it starts automatically with windows. I tried to search it, but I found only the setup and it doesn't work. How can I get back to my APPLE iMac? How can I use OSX?
Excuse me for the (maybe) uncorrect language, I speak Italian.

    Hello!
You can start your Mac up with the [alt] (sometimes [option]) key pressed and you will get the Startup Manager.
