How can I uninstall Yosemite on a USB drive?

I have a 2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have found that various websites, especially ones with Flash, keep telling me my software is out of date and I have trouble playing videos. So I thought I should maybe upgrade to Yosemite, but I wanted to try it first. Several websites suggested I could install Yosemite on a 32 Gb USB drive as a triel and so retain my existing OS, switching between the two on startup by pressing the option key.
So I did it, was able to run Yosemite (slowly) from the USB drive, but when I tried to restart using the Option key, the Hard Disk option was labelled "Installer" and selecting it only started the installation process over again.
It appears that the Hard Disk is still intact, but I can't get back to my old OS. If I remove the USB drive before startup, absolutely nothing happens. It seems that the software or firmware that boots up has been reset and I need to know how to set it back again if that is possible.
I'm pretty desperate. I need to get back to Snow leopard and do a few things before I make a final decision on Yosemite. Can anyone help me please?

If you are currently on Yosemite have you gone into System Preferences and clicked the StartUp Disk option, this should give you a list of available disks that
can be booted to. Hopefully this will get you back to SL.

How can I uninstall Yosemite and reinstall Loin with out losing all my in formation and programsThis had been the worst os system apple has come out, too many errors
    too many to list.
    a few
Losing all mail. and watching them disappear in front of my eyes and could nothing about it
also when accessing cloud the screen just rolls in when accessing mail, like loading and loading and loading for 1 to 2 minuets.
I did not up grade my Mac Book Pro, and is working fine,
Just my iMac, its act kile avid card and it only happens access iCloud mail.
so I want to and need to go back to Loin

You can't unless you have a current backup of your old Lion system because the first thing you must do is erase the drive. It 's possible to use Target Disk Mode between your iMac and the MBP in order to clone the MBP to the iMac. However, that will still erase everything on the iMac's drive.
Or you could see about getting Yosemite to work correctly. If you have IMAP mail, then your mail should be intact.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?

how can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?
I just removed all data from main hd, and my network is not good enough to be able to download the os via recovery hd re-installing way.
in other words, is there a bootable [mac os x lion dmg] for my mba that I can download?

If you are looking for a download link for OS X Lion, I do not know of one. However if you really need the operating system you can buy a USB drive with OS X Lion on it, ready to boot. I think they're $69 at Apple's store. What I would do is contact AppleCare via the Express Lane or just call them and tell them your situation and then they will definantly have an answer for you to point you in the right direction.
    Good luck!

  • How can I uninstall yosemite without losing all my stuff?

I just installed Yosemite tonight and I've realized that I absolutely hate it. Not only does it look horrible, but my computer is super laggy, wont load anything but firefox, and for a while it completely locked me out of my computer. I need my computer for work and school so this is absolutely not acceptable. I really just want to go back to mavericks, however I don't have an external hard drive or have time machine. How can I go back to mavericks without losing all my stuff?

Unless your machine shipped with Mavericks or, if not, you saved a copy of the Mavericks install app, you're screwed. Without a bootable backup/clone or TM backup of your previously good Mavericks installation, there's no way to get from here to there; unless you know someone that kept the Mavericks installer.

  • How can I uninstall yosemite?

I recently downloaded yosemite and hate the display. I am backing up my hard drive to a separate partition on my mac. It is name "Macintosh HD 2" and I was wondering if all my files will be safe on that? I plan to erase my hard drive so my system can go back to the original OS X. Will my files still be saved even though it is on the HD (on a separate partition)? Does anyone know if this works?
If not, how can I revert back to my original systems OS X?
I'm not very tech savvy so all information will help!
    Thanks

It'll work when erasing the partition with Yosemite on it and installing the older OS, but not when the internal drive fails.

  • How can I make a Bootable OSX USB Drive

Looking for instructions on how to make a bootable OSX USB thumb drive?
My mid 2009 MacBook Pro has a bad Hard Drive and I am going to start over with a new one.  I keep getting an error message attempting to install on the current hard drive.  In order to make it easier I would like to make a bootable USB Thumb drive get a new hard drive and start from scratch.
ALSO - any hard drive recomendations would be greatly apprecieated. (vendor and MFG)
    Thanks

    Arthur-
thanks, I never use WD.  I used to work in computers and the WD drive was the most failed drive we would see.  I only ask because I guess at some point I did not build the current drive correctly causing damage.  I am starting to think about a new computer due to the optical drive now being dead as well.
My only concern about a SSD is the transfer rate.  From what I have looked at the current config for a mid 2009 MBP will not get the max speed out of a SSD due to the wire rating in the machine.  Any thoughts on a normal disk HD?
    Thanks

  • VPN stopped working since installing Yosemite. Can I uninstall Yosemite?

I use the Oneclick as a VPN and it has been excellent. However, after I installed Yosemite, I cannot use the VPN. How can I uninstall Yosemite??

    Hi jblier,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you want to install a prior version of OS X. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • How can I take music from an USB and transfer it to the iPod? It tells me use use itunes to sync but the music is on an USB drive. It had worked in the past. Tks

How can I transfer music from an USB drive to the iPod. I can see the music and play it on the computer, but the iPod tells me to use iTunes to sync. The music is not on iTunes. It has worked in the past.....tks

These are just playlists. The songs there are really not duplicates of the songs. They are just a different location for accessing them. Some playlists can be deleted, some cannot. Ones that are created by iTunes cannot be deleted. Ones that you create can be. The Recently Added and the 90's cannot.

  • How can you download Yosemite to a location other than Launchpad?

I am trying to make a bootable USB drive of Yosemite. When I download Yosemite from the App Store it goes into Launchpad. I can't make a bootable backup from this application. How do I get the Yosemite installer to download to my Applications folder instead of Launchpad?
    Mac Pro Mid-2009
    Yosemite
    Thank you!

It does not download to Launchpad. Launchpad isn't a location. It downloads to the Applications folder. Copy the installer to your Downloads folder. Follow these instructions for a bootable flash drive:
How to Make an OS X Yosemite Boot Installer USB Drive
    Or:
Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. At the prompt copy and paste this entire command line:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction
You need to have the installer in your Applications folder or change the paths in the above command line. Be sure to label your USB flash drive as, Untitled.

  • How can I uninstall Garageband

How can I uninstall garage band in order to reinstall it.
I have been having problems creating files and songs on GarageBand 10.10.3
I have deleted a couple of songs and re-created them thinking the songs might have been corrupt.
Still the same problem the play is Herky jerky and doesn't function properly.
Do not want to use a third-party application to uninstall but want to be sure that when I uninstall GarageBand before reinstalling that it will get all of the components that might be corrupted.
I can drag the icon to the trash but will that take all of the components in the Mac with it.

    Hello. Léonie
Yes indeed have a AU plugin called a RoughRider.component, and RoughRider.vst in the COMPONENT folder  in Plug Ins, in Audio, where the maker (? at the moment, Cat something) told me to put them. It is a compressor suggested by a YOUTUBE guru, free and a must have, hmmm!!!!
Now this AU plugin is used in a track for vocals on this song. I could delete the vocal track (want it to be better anyway) then delete the AU from the Component  folder. If I don't delete the vocal track, GB will not like that the track was recorded with something that is no longer there correct?
Let me also state that my AudioBox is a USB plugged into a Belkin Powered HUB plugged into he USB on the MAC.
I was thinking to just plug the A-Box USB direct to the MAC but was under the understanding that stuff plugged into the USB takes juice or 'energy', (sorry) something to be desired by running USB's off the Mac power.
I will wait for your reply as to the best way, 'IYHO', (in your honest opinion) as to dump the RoughRider.component and the RoughRider.vst before I just grab and delete and...... as last straw delete GB and reinstall. The reason for the question of just grabbing GB to the trash is all the files that are on the MAC associated with the application
To reinstall GarageBand 10.0.3 it should suffice to select GarageBand on the Launchpad, hold down on it until it starts to wiggle, and then press the "x" in the upper left corner to uninstall it.
Never knew about Launchpad, now I've learned another thing, thanks.

  • Can I uninstall yosemite?

the upgrade has slowed thing down, there is a long pause when starting any app. how can I uninstall the upgrade and go back?

If you have a TimeMachine backup of the previous installation, see:OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version
If not, the procedure varies a little depending on the system that came installed on your computer.  But all procedures follow the basic routine of erasing the hard drive and then reinstalling the original operating system.
It might be better to try doing some maintenance steps first, open Disk Utility and select your internal storage, usually Macintosh HD, then run Repair Permissions.  That usually returns a very large number of errors the first time, so run it again.  Then restart the Mac.  See how the performance is now.
Also, are you running any anti-virus or cleaning software?  That stuff causes major problems with Yosemite and should be removed.

  • I have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk?

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

  • How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?

There's a reported bug among iDVD '08 users where burning
large projects are resulting in audio synch problems near the
    end of the burned DVD.
In other words, the audio slowly goes out of synch towards the
    end of burned projects.
This is a problem inherent with 'DVD '08.
I tried uninstalling iDVD '08 and replacing with '06 but it doesn't
work. You try that and iDVD will not launch at all.
Even tried to partition my drive and install iLife '06 to the partition
but the system will not let me.
Anyone have a solution how to completely uninstall iLife '08
    components and install iLife '06?
    Thanks

I upgraded to iLife 08 from 06 (bad move). I couldn't install iMovie because my Mac is too old (must be Intel-based or comparable). iDVD didn't work--the document window was always black, even with a theme selected. The Virtual Band function in GarageBand did nothing whatsoever. I trashed the '08 applications, moved all Preferences files to my desktop, reinstalled iLife '06. Now, iDVD won't launch--just flashes the menu bar and exits back to the Finder. So, I have several DVD projects on my system that I cannot finish because I cannot reinstall iLife '06 (like the originator of this problem, "How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?") I hope someone has an answer as this is frustrating and costly to my small business.

  • How can I uninstall my Photoshop CS 3 from my Mac, without an uninstaller?

How can I uninstall my Photoshop CS3 from my Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?   It has never opened, since I increased the Mac's capacity to 2 TB.  Now I want to throw the Photoshop CS3 away and get a brand new Photoshop CS5.    There does not seem to be an uninstaller anywhere to be found.  Adobe spent an hour and a half on the phone with me and could not find a work-around.   We tried to reinstall the CS3 from the disk, but the installations failed.
An earlier Photoshop CS2 is also on the computer and needs to be uninstalled.
Is there a way to rescue my computer and put the new Photoshop on it?

You need to manually delete the caps.db (somewehre in the Library:Application Support:Adobe folder) and then you can trash the program folders. Without an existing caps.db, a new one wil lbe created from scratch and al linstalls should run as if there never was anything on the system just as conversely you should not have trouble simply deleting the old versions...
