It's impossible to format a hard drive without losing the data. One thing you can do before formatting is to copy the files from the external drive to your internal drive, and then, format the external drive. After formatting, copy the files to the external drive again, and everything will be as before formatting it

Try this:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
   1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
       other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
   2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
       until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
              * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
       device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
       let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
       charge, and then start with step 2 again.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
       When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

Was Find My iPhone enabled prior to the device being lost? If it was not, there is no way to track the device.

Restore, if iTunes will let you. Everything except the password will be restored. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. Be forewarned that it takes a long time. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Hi altagumasi,
The pinhole reset button on the back panel of the device will reset user and network settings. It will not delete your data. Press the reset button for 15 seconds and the device should reboot. After the reboot, you will go through the initial configuration process.

I did the reset, the pc scrren said it would take about a half hour reseting which is ok. But midway through the process it apparently disconnected itself from the Ipad and the ipad icon disappeared from the itunes screen. Will try process again see if it works. Thanks for the suggestion.

I dont have enough space on my labtop hd to keep all my photos in one library.... so i brake it up in 4 library. The problem is that i can do only one at the time for sync with my ipod..... i searching a way to sync my ipod to make me able to put on a few photos from each libraray without loosing all of them.

You will need that library copied from the old computer. If not, then you can take a look at this in getting 3rd party software to recover your library from the iPod. Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

I recently switched from a Windows computer to a Macbook Air, and then.. i tried to sync my iPad with iTunes, and this is what it says:
I like the order my apps are in on my iPad, and I don't want to risk loosing any of the apps data, all my music, all my videos, and all my photos (But i have my photos saved on a USB drive)
I already transfered my purchases with File > transfer purchases
But, is that enough to verify that I won't loose the order of my apps on my device or loose the data?

I am sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post. I already knew how to transfer purchases. I had movies that wasn't originally from iTunes on my new computer that I wanted to transfer to my iPad, but then this message popped up:
It wouldn't transfer with "Transfer purchases".
I transfered my apps, music, etc. to the new computer already. But I am afraid that I will loose my game data... I also did home sharing. The iPad is synced with my old computer's library. Is transfering purchases from the iPad to iTunes enough to ensure me that I won't loose my game data?
