Contact the carrier your phone is locked to to see if they offer official unlocking, & what the cost/procedure is. There is NO other way to get your phone officially unlocked, & Apple does not unlock iPhones.

You don't need to unlock your iPhone if you want to use it abroad. There's roaming
If, however you want to insert a SIM card in another country, you should contact your provider. Every provider has it's specific rules for unlocking so I can't give you a general answer -

Verizon also doesn't seem to have an email address, so I also asked my friend in the US to call verizon, and it still doesn't work. Can I call verizon through skype or something? You can not use a Sprint iPhone (4S or 5) on any U.S. carrier other than Sprint. If you want to use AT&T, you will need to buy a new phone.

First you'd have to establish service with Verizon. Once a paying customer in good standing, you can then request the GSM portion be unlocked. Obviously, you can't do any of that stuff while you're out of the US. They will not unlock the CDMA side.

The normal process is to request the unlock with the carrier. They process it and pass it on to Apple to be applied to the Apple's iPhone database. The carrier would then inform you when Apple has provisioned the unlock, and you would restore your iPhone as a new device in iTunes to apply the unlock (you would get a message at the end of that restore as new in iTunes indicating the unlock was successfully applied). You could then restore your iPhone from backup to get everything back as it was.
However, for some carriers, you seem to beed to complete the iTunes restore from within the country where they provide service. Regardless, have you tried restoring as new in iTunes to see if it processes any provisioned unlock request? Just be sure to backup the iPhone first, before restoring as new. -

If you are referring to a lock to a specific cell carrier, so you can use the iPhone with a different carrier, only the cell carrier to whom the phone is locked can authorize unlocking. You will need to contact the carrier.

If the carrier tells you that they do not unlock iPhones, then there is nothing you can do other than sell the iPhone to someone who can use it with that carrier and purchase an iPhone that is officially unlocked.

Stop Lost Mode or change your contact info
Sign in to icloud.com/#find with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud).
If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, then select the device that’s in Lost Mode.
Click Lost Mode, then change the information or click Stop Lost Mode.

See this http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212, but if that doesn't help, the only other way to get past this is to restore the phone on the computer you normally sync with to your latest backup. This will remove the passcode.
