How can i updated my mac mini 1st gen.

i am running a version 10.3.9 now how can i updated it

To reinforce what Niel said, you want the "RETAIL" version of the discs. Those are the discs with silver or white lettering on a black background. The discs with a silvery grey background are unique to a specific Mac computer model and highly unlikely to work on your mini. When buying on eBay, do not depend on the seller to know what they have or even that there is a difference. Question them closely and maybe even get them to send a color picture of the specific discs you will be buying.

How can I control a mac mini connected by USB to a Benchmark DAC 2 for the purpose of listening to 24/192 music downloads?

    Hello,
About the dac 1, but may apply to the dac 2 as well in some ways...
    Here are more details:
    1) The current version of iTunes (7.5) for OSX is very broken. Some older versions work properly, but 7.5 introduces truncation and DSP artifacts that can measure as high as –80dBFS. These levels are easily audible. There is no system configuration that will permit transparent playback from 44.1kHz sources with iTunes 7.5. Curiously, the only format that works properly in 7.5 is 24-bit/96kHz. This iTunes problem has nothing to do with USB communications, as the results are the same when using the built-in optical port on our PowerBooks. As a workaround, we suggest using the free VLC for Mac player. VLC works perfectly with all formats (provided OSX is set to match the sample rate of the files being played). We highly recommend the VLC player for OSX users, and strongly advise against using iTunes. We will attempt to identify which versions of iTunes work and which ones don't. But beware, iTunes updates itself without user intervention. One of our test computers "upgraded" itself to the dysfunctional iTunes 7.5.
    2) OSX still does not have the ability to follow sample-rate changes. We consider this a nuisance for most users and a show-stopper for users who want to play a mixed list of 44.1kHz and 96kHz material. An OSX sample-rate mismatch will invoke the very-poor-quality sample-rate conversion that is built into OSX. The iTunes 7.5 bug seems to be locking on this sample-rate conversion at all sample rates other than 96kHz. Until this is fixed, OSX is not the operating system of choice for audio playback.

Check your machine's actual specifications here.
It looks like you can support up to 3 MByte in a 17" iMac and up to 4 Mbyte in a 20" iMac, if your cache size coordinates with the specs on the linked page.
OWC says you should be able to put 4 Gbyte into your machine here.  Wherever you get the memory, it would be a good addition.  This is the Apple Store listing for your machine, as near as I can figure it.

  • How can i get mynew mac mini to use the drive in my old mac pro

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive.   So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire.  I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine  both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive.   But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much.  yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive.  Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers.   I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

HOW CAN I UPDATE MY MAC OS X 10.6.8 TO GET ICLOUD?

Open the Mac App Store and try purchasing Mountain Lion. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, and if the computer has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and at least 2GB of RAM, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.

Based on your description, you are having a kernel panic.
Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase the Snow Leopard Disc and Install it.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like

Last Novemember I had bought myself the new nano, and I went home and hooked it up to my MacBook to sync it to my iTunes and saw that I was not able to do that because my software was not up-to-date. I spent all day on the apple web site trying to download all the software updates in order form olderst to newest, so I would be able to update my software new enough that it would be compatable to my nano. After the whole day of downloading I still wasn't able to make any process of updating my laptop at all. I need help.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • How can I clone my mac mini and MBP daily?

Is there a 3rd party app for regularly syncing my two computers' libraries and prefs? I use .mac, and while that's great for Safari, Mail, Contacts, etc, it can't update changes/additions made to things like iPhoto, iTunes as well as non Apple apps (Quicksilver, 1Password, Firefox, etc). My goal is to use my mini at home, and when I'm away have the exact mirror image on my macbook pro. Is there some app (other than time machine) that does this on an automated basis when both computers are networked?

There's no program to do exactly what you want and further, I strongly urge you to cut back your expectations. Let me illustrate the problem. Say you buy a couple new songs using your mini and then suddenly get called away and while on the road buy a few more songs. Now you have two different iTunes libraries and no program exists that will parse through the library files to find out what is different in each one and resolve the differences.
I suggest that you take a look at a program such as ChronoSync which can be set up to keep specific folders in sync. Use that to keep your word processing and similar folders synced. Let .Mac keep your bookmarks, contacts, and the like synced. As for iTunes and iPhoto, either be disciplined and use only one computer for additions and manually copy files for addition into their respective libraries or use keep a reminder going in iCal that you added such and such a picture or song. Delete as you copy them.
I've been on this keep two computers up to date merry-go-round since about 1992.
