How can I upload new OS for iphone 3 without syncing?

I'm trying to download the software, but it's taking forever to sync. Is there a way I can download without syncing?

To reply to the original question: go to iTunes Preferences, then Devices and check the 'prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically' option. You can then connect your device and choose to download updates only. You will need to hit the 'sync' button when you want to do this from now on though, unless you deselect the prevent automatic syncing option in preferences again. Hope this helps

I used to sync my podcasts to my phone individually, but found out that the Podcast app works better for me. It continously downloads the podcasts (not really sure when, that's the only thing, when its downloading it may use data depending on where you are) and also deletes the ones i have listened to. Imagine this scenario, can't be that unlikely:
I'm going away on holiday, or away on work for a while, and I'm not taking the computer to which I sync my phone. Before I leave I fill my iPhone up with music to take with me. While I'm travelling I want to install a new app, but I don't have space. I look to delete content from the phone - I can delete podcasts but not music. Unfortunately I don't have enough podcasts to free up space that way. So I don't purchase the app I wanted.
This is bad for:
1. The user (me)
2. The app developer - lost download.
3. Apple - they lose their cut of the app download, and royally p#@* off a user.
Can someone explain to me why this limitation is good for anyone?!

If you intent to begin syncing your phone with your new computer, to avoid losing your data copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527. You also need to move any other synced data that is not in your iTunes library such as any synced photos, calendars, contacts, etc.
Another option is to use Migration Assistant on your mac (available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1415) to migrate your data to your new computer. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796.

In a conversation with an ICloud support person, he suggested I always use Itunes to sync my Contacts - I don't understand how this would work and I would think it near impossible to keep eveything synced this way. How does Itunes know which devise has the correct updated information. What happens to deleted contacts in one device, some in another, changed info in the next, etc. Would I have to sync them on every change I made to a device - this sounds un-managemable to me. What happenns if one devse looses its information- does Itunes know not to kill the info in all the other devices. Due to my limited knowledge, I an afraid of the whole syncing process.
Currently I am using the ICloud for all my Scheduling, Notes and Reminders and it works great for updating across all my devices. My wife and I share the same account, so this keeps us from making scheduling commitments that conflict with the other, etc.. ICould works great for this. Now if I can get it to work for updating my Contacts, I would be very happy !

As I said, if you want to buy it from the USA online Apple store, you will need to have a credit card issued by an American Bank or financial company, you will have to have a USA billing address associated with that card, and you will have to have it shipped to a USA street address.
Aramax is a shipping company - you do not have a credit card from them and they cannot pay for your purchase. Having an account with a shipping company doesn't provide you with a USA source of payment for your purchase.
As I understand it, the Oman government does not allow the iPhone to be sold in Oman, there are no official service providers for it, and thus there is no legitimate source to buy an iPhone from within Oman.
Online Apple stores do not allow payment by foreign means or in foreign currency, they do not do currency exchange, nor do they ship internationally.

It's very easy to backup media... you simply backup the computer.
Choosing to not backup the computer is rather ignorant. All it takes is a power surge, hard drive failure, natural disaster, computer virus, or theft and all your important media and files are gone.
Most Operating Systems have backup solutions included, it's simply up to the user to provide a place for it to backup (i.e external hard drive) there are also options to backup to a web based service.
As for the iPhone and iTunes not being user friendly, I'd seriously disagree with you on that statement. Ultimately it's up to you, but I think after a little hassle with another mp3 player and trying to manage it via other software you'll agree as well.
