You will not be able to use an iPhone with Access Malawi. They are indeed a CDMA carrier and so require phones sold specifically for use with their network. Unless and until such time as they themselves offer the iPhone, you will have to use one of the phone models they sell, or use a different cell carrier. There are several carriers that offer GSM-based services, so perhaps one of them would offer services that would work with an iPhone.

You can only do so if your phone is officially unlocked. If your phone is carrier locked now, you need to contact the carrier your phone is locked to to see if they offer unlocking, and what the cost/procedure is.

You cannot. The iPhone is locked to Softbank, and only they can unlock it. Problem is that Softbank will NOT unlock the phone, as they do not offer iPhone unlocking.
Buy an iPhone in the Phillipines.
PS Before you go on a rant at Apple, be aware that Apple does NOT unlock phones and they do not set unlocking policies. The carriers (Softbank in this case) set the unlocking policy.

Apple can do nothing. As Tim said, only the carrier to whom the iPhone is locked can authorize unlocking. You must contact that carrier.

However, I still have 2 weeks before I leave and cannnot wait to start using my Iphone 4. I thought at least I could use the mp3 player function. Call AT&T and see if you meet their requirements for unlocking the phone. If you don't, then you'll have to purchase a different phone entirely.

You cannot use a UK carrier sim in Chile unless you are a UK customer and have roaming set up with the UK carrier and the Chinease carriers do not offer unlocking so I doubt the iphone is unlocked

Someone sold me a bad IMEI AT&T iphone 5. I had an AT&T iphone 4 with straight talk prior to buying this phone. I didn't know the IMEI was bad so I bought the iphone 5 hoping to switch. I cut my SIM card and put it into the iphone 5. Everything worked perfectly fine so I went ahead and gave the dude the money. I went to sleep and wake up the next day and try to make a call and I get a message saying my phone has been blocked from the network. I contacted straight talk and they thought it was a problem of theirs so somehow they got my phone to work again. Everything was good , calls, texts , and data. 2 hours later, the same problem happens. So I call straight talk again , tell them the problem. They fix It again, 2 hours later , THE SAME PROBLEM. I gave up this time and began looking for answers. Is there any way I can use this iphone 5 with straight talk ? There was a comment I saw through my search for answers where if I get another straight talk sim everything would work again. Is this true?
