How can I use the parallel port as an input channel to communicate with a SPECTROMETER?

Hello,
The sensing system we use is called: FieldSpec Pro from www.asdi.com.
The spectrometer has a LPT terminal. I'd like to use LabVIEW to acquire signals from the spectrometer for further analysis.
Thank you!

Dennis,
I appreciate your time.
I have asked the copmany for such infos, but it seems to be confidential.
Do I need an I/O DAQ-Card?

About all that tells me is
that I'm located in the same town as the manufacturer. You'll need to
find some specification that describes the parallel port protocol.
Without that, you're just wasting your time. Even if the instrument is
constantly sending data, you'll need to know how to interpret the data
and there's nothing that says it has to be sending constantly. Maybe
you first have to write something to the port first. Talk to them and
tell them you want to replace their software with software of your own
and need to be able to read the data.

I was wondering how to adress my PC´s

Do I have to read/write somehow directly

If so, how can this be done ?

Use VISA to read/write to the parallel port just like you would read/write
to the serial port. I would staty away from the inport/outport stuff. I believe
there's some articles in the KnowledgeBase if you get stuck.

  • How can i us the parallel port of the printer to control a frequenz-generator?

    Hello all !
I like to  control with LabVIEW 8 student-version, the Frequenz-generator gadget . For this challenge i like to us the parallel port of the printer. I need for data flow only 2 cable. The frequenz-generator gadget need two signal : Low and High. How  can i  us the parallel port of the printer to control a frequenz-generator gadget? I have us  the VIs-Visa  (Visa-Serial, write, Close ), but i dont no what command i have to write on the Visa-Write so that the Signal can be in the low or high position.
    Thanks

    Hi Jeanjac,
    first, look here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_port
to get the port numbering. also, be sure not to leave pin unconected, sometimes you might get an error message otherwise (i remember pin11 has to be always connected or so for windows...)
second, just run the test panel in MAX and write something to your device to check if it works.
then in LV, you have to decide to which pin is connected your instrument. in any case you have to address all 8 output pins together! this is a parallel...
if you prefere to use only one pin, then you can use the serial port, with just pin 2 and 3 connected. it would work easier for you, since you address only one bit.

  • Can I use the instrument I/O assistant express vi to communicate with a USB connected instrument ?

Can I use the instrument I/O assistant express vi to communicate with a USB connected instrument ? My PC is running Windows 2000 et Labview7 express.
where can I get information or examples on the assistant and USB communication ?

Yes you can - the Instrument I/O Assistant communicates with message-based instruments through VISA. VISA 3.0 supports USB instruments and VISA 3.0 is the version of VISA that installs with the Assistant.

  • How can I clear the parallel port?

I'm sending image-files to a custom made printing unit via VISA through the parallel port.
Sometimes the unit doesn't accept the file.
Therefore I need to clear the parrallel port completely and send the file again.
(Right now I'm switching off the unit and waiting for the error message from WindowsNT).
How can I clear the parrallel port via LabVIEW?
(VISA clear.vi doesn't work, the data is still on the port).

    Rainer,
Maybe you can try the "VISA Flush I/O Buffer" vi (VISA - VISA Advanced -
Interface Specific). It worked on a serial port, but I have no idea if it
    works
also on a parallel port. It is worth trying it.
    Good Luck.

  • How can we use the SDXC PORT ?

    Hi,
Im intending to buy a Macbook pro 15" and i wonder how can i use the SDXC to boot my future macbook.
I heard there is out there some cards to make it boot faster. I am not talking here about sd camera cards.
And do you think i made the right choice by choosing the 15" 2.2 ghz i7 ?
    Thank you

There's only one way to make your "mac faster and use it every day"—replace the internal disk drive with an SSD, or replace the internal SSD with a bigger and faster SSD.
Disk I/O has alwas been the main bottleneck of all computers. So you either make it occur faster or you reduce de times it needs to occur.
In the "faster" section, the issues I have with SSDs are several:
Their price still needs to go down way more. The cost per MB of SSD-based storage is still vastly greater than that of HDDs. Yes, if you compute in extreme environments like karting down Baja or skydiving off the Himalayas, a ruggedized SSD is great, but most of us mortals live in the safe confines of a homey office.
The size of SSDs has to expand much more. Yes, they are inching up to the 500GB size, but HDDs are at 1TB and promise to break that barrier before the year is out.
If you purchase your SSD preinstalled in your Mac, you will be paying a big premium, compared to marketplace SSDs, even those from the same maker but not Apple-branded. This also applies to RAM.
If you put in a non-Apple-branded SSD, Lion will not enable TRIM support by default and you will have to go "under the hood" to enable it. Without TRIM, you will not get the full performance and durability benefit of an SSD.
Might be me, but I prefer to stick with HDDs for now, just making sure they are of 7200RPM spindle speed.
In the "reduce" section, must point out that Lion is a 64-bit beast. Meaning that all data structures are twice the size of previous 32-bit cats. Regardless of "minimum" specs, 4GB RAM is the new practical minimum and 8GB makes the fat cat much happier. But buying RAM from Apple is not a financially wise decision; an 8GB upgrade from reputable vendors can be had for around $40, in stark comparison to the $200 premium charged by the Apple store. For the same $200 or a bit less, you can get a 16GB upgrade instead, not officially sanctioned but that works just fine with the latest model Macs. In this case, I don't think the OP will need as much, but it is something to take under consideration. The extra RAM will drastically reduce the disk-based paging that the memory management carries out, thereby minimizing that bottleneck.

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Can I use the ethernet port ....

Can I use the ethernet port on the ATV to connect my blue ray p[layer to the internet using the ATV as a wireless card??
    If so how??

I might be next in line on the airport extreme! Right now wireless is working better since the latest upgrade to iTunes, but hardwire is the way to go. Only problem is that ISP connections is in my office and my Home Media is downstairs. I was thinking of setting the Airport Extreme as a repeater in order to access ISP and then used the ports in the back for iTunes and ATV.

U have to restart the sever after changing the port.
One more main thing here , no other services must not be using the port.
It will cause port binding exception.

  • How can I use the free space of my Time Capsule as wireless HD ?

How can I use the 1 Tb free space to ave data available from all my devices ?
    Tks

Although it seems like you have a lot of extra space, Time Machine keeps versions, and if you want to take full advantage of the version history you should not worry about "extra space" because it will get used to provide safer coverage for the two Macs. If you had a Time Machine disk that fit your two Macs' hard drives perfectly, you would have no room for the version history, only room for the one most recent copy of each file. This can be a problem if you discover corruption that happened a while ago and cannot go back far enough in time to find an uncorrupted file.
Therefore it's better to not try and use up the "extra space" and let it be used for a longer, safer version history for your backups.
But like you, I want to use my Time Machine for additional network storage. So I plugged a cheap, compact hard drive into the Time Capsule USB port, and that shows up in File Sharing too. There is no need to buy anything fancier since it will be limited by both network speed and USB 2.0 anyway.
