How can I view PDF files on Safari

My MacBook Pro will not open PDF files on Safari. I have Adobe Acrobat but the program is asking me for a 24 digit serial number when I only have 20. I tried looking under Preferences and About Safari but I just can't figure it out. Is there any other way to view the PDF files on Safari?

Download and install the freeware Adobe Reader application. It includes a web browser plugin that works in Safari.
Consult Adobe about the serial number problem with Acrobat.

    Hello Kirk,
Thank's for your efforts, and I just wish that this was the solution.  Unfortunately, it isn't because, after double-clicking on the pdf in the website, it simply "opens" in another Safari window as a black screen - the pdf is there, somewhere, but not visible (either as an icon, or as a document).
When I right-click in the black Safari window, where the file is supposed to be, the only option available to display the file is to "Open file in Internet Explorer" (which is not what I want to do).  Other options include saving or printing the pdf, which I don't want until I've confirmed that it's the form that I want.  The same options are offered if I right-click on the file icon in the website.
    Any other suggestions, please?

Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

I'm new to the Apple products. How can I view pdf files and videos since Apple and Adobe don't play together? Also, what operating system does the iPhone use? I'm a Windows person.

You may want to download and read the manual for your phone. It may answer a lot of the basic questions.

There is an app on your phone called "Mail". Yes, it's for reading your email.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I open pdf files in safari browser without installing Adobe reader?

I do not wish to use adobe reader. I just uninstalled it and now I can't view pdf files in preview when attempting to open the file in safari browser.  How can set safari to open any pdf files using preview application?

Copy the text below, including the initial /
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Switch to Finder, then use the Go menu - Go to Folder command & paste in the text, clicking Go afterwards.
A Finder window should open, showing various plug-in files. Trash any that are for Adobe or PDF. You'll be asked for an admin name & password.

  • I can't view PDF files on Safari 5.1 for windows 7, how do I fix this?

I like using Safari 5.1 for my web browser at work (I use a windows 7 machine). But the recent update won't let me view PDF files. I have to open up Google Chrome then copy and paste the address into it so I can view the PDF. How do I fix this?

    I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro 9.4.5
There are no updates for this. Are you suggesting I unistall then reinstall this?

  • Can't view pdf files using safari after upgrading 10.5.8 to  10.6.5

I noticed that right after I upgraded from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.5, I no longer could view any pdf's I would click on unless I used "control click" option to download the file/pdf. Before upgrading all I had to do was click on a pdf link and it opened up automatically in a new window. Now all I get a black screen unless I "control click"
I am thankful that I saw in the discussion area that I at least have a way to view it but do not understand why upgrading to 10.6.5 changed the way I use to be able to open/view pdf files.
    Thanks

    Hi keyag
I suspect you've an adobe pdf viewer plugin that requires safari to run in 32 bit mode. Either remove it from HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ & restart Safari; or select Safari in Applications, do a File-Get Info - and check the 32 bit box, again restarting Safari.
... do not understand why upgrading to 10.6.5 changed ...
probably because 10.6.x runs Safari as a 64 bit process by default, and the plugin won't work that way. Maybe there's an update for it (assuming the plugin guess is correct )

  • Can't view pdf files on safari

    Hello, everyone!
I am having the following problem with safari: For around 2 months it has stopped displaying pdf files. Whenever I press a pdf link a blank (dark grey) screen opens showing absolutely nothing. I cannot download a pdf, view it or save it on my disc.
Things I have tried doing in an attempt to fix the issue:
    1. Uninstalled all relevant plug-ins. (nothing changed)
    2. Uninstalled pdf pro x.(nothing changed)
    3. Uninstalled acrobat reader. (nothing changed)
    4. Reinstalled acrobat reader. (nothing changed)
    5. Re-uninstalled internet plugins. (still nothing)
Is there anything else i can do? I am desparate, i am trying to finish my phd and this issue is a great hinderance. Please help.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How can I view pdf files that existed before I downloaded a newer reader version?

I'm unable to view older pdf files after downloading the newest version of reader! How can I fix this?

They should open the same as they did with the older version.
How are you trying to open (double clicking, using file>Open from within Reader, clicking on a link on a webpage...etc) them and what happens when you try?

  • How can I view .pdf files in a Firefox window?

When I click on a .pdf link, Firefox downloads the file to my desktop. This is fine.
Sometimes, however, I would prefer that Firefox simply open the .pdf document in a new window. I know it used to work this way, but it stopped some time ago. How can I control this behavior?
I looked in Preferences > Applications and selected on "pdf". Two entries showed up under "Content Type":
    "Preview.app Document (application/po..."
    and
    "Portable Document Format (PDF)".
Both entries have the same "Action": "Use PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4 (in Firefox)"
Oops. I just figured it out. The PDF entry (only) has an extra pulldown option under Action: "Preview in Firefox". I tried it and it works!
I guess the old PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4 must've quit working some time ago.

We're good here, thanks. I went ahead and posted in case someone else had the same problem.
Although... if you know how I might clean out that now-obsolete PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4, I'd appreciate the tip.

    The Problem:
After loading OSX 10.7.1, whenever I try to open a .pdf file from a website using Safari 5.1, I get a blank gray/black screen with the Quicktime  Q symbol in the middle.
    Notes:
I downloaded and set my preference to use Adobe Reader version 10.1.1 on all .pdf files.
I am able to successfully open .pdf files, with Adobe Reader, which are on already on my hard drive.
I am also able to successfully open .pdf files, with Adobe Reader, which are sent to me via email.
Only the Safari website .pdf files are unopenable.

  • How can I view pdf's in safari v5.1?

I will search for this -- but Safari v5.1 uses the Quicktime plug-in to read PDF's.  It doesn't work without a cumbersome workaround.  I will look at the discussions, but it is the dumbest thing I have found in a long time.  Is there a way to get Preview back into Safari as a plug-in?  Or perhaps Acrobat?
    Any ideas,
    Tom Nelson

Right or control click a PDF file you have on the hard drive then click Get Info.
Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
    Select Preview
    The click: Change all
