How can I WIPE OUT a previous installation (without erasing entire volume)?
Like many people (apparently) I had severe problems updating to 10.4.4 (from 10.4.3). I was trying to use a laCie D2 firewire drive as the boot volume. No dice, so I finally reinstalled 10.4.3 on a different drive and have had no problems since.
I would like to recover the disk space on the laCie D2 firewire drive that is being wasted by previous bad installs. However, I don't know exactly what files to delete and I figure there are system files hanging around that are not visible to me, etc. Is there some kind of cleanup utility for this sort of situation or should I just erase the entire volume? This would be kind of a pain as I'd have to reinstall a bunch of apps. What's the safest way to go?
I STILL have not been able to find out why installing 10.4.4 on this Firewire drive turned out so flaky. Disk Util reports absolutely no problems on this drive.
G4 Mac OS X (10.0.x) 10.4.4 crashing firewire LaCie
Hi jd:
I have 10.4.4 on my LaCie and it runs beautifully. You can try using Deinstaller. I have never used it and can't vouch for it. You can select everything you don't want on your drive for deletion. Please be careful as you don't want to delete anything you can't afford to lose.
You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to install the OS you want from your internal HDD> Go into Preferences in CCC and click on the checkbox to Make Bootable, Repair Permissions and Synchronize. Then after you have selected your Sources you can edit the list that shows up deleting items you don't want to clone. It will clone everything you want to your LaCie.
If I may suggest, it might be a good idea to run Repair Disk on your LaCie before the above operations.
Post back with questions or comments.
Good luck.

I havev installed a new Hard Drive on my laptop but cannot find my Photoshop Elements product box with the serial number to install Elements 10 or Elememts Premier 10. How can I find out the serial / installation codes for these? I saw a reply however, it was not my name and assumed it was for someone else. Now timed out. Can UI still have help on this matter please?
If you registered PSE before, go to the main page of adobe.com, sign in and go to your account and you should find the serial number there in your purchases.

How can I log out that iCloud account without password ?
You can't.
Return the phone to whoever you bought it from and get a refund. Without the previous owners password you will not be able to enter your own iCloud acount, and when you update the phone, you won't be able to re-activate it as it will be locked to the previous owners account.
You should've checked the phone was not locked to someone else's iCloud account BEFORE buying it.

I just bought a new computer, how can I start syncing with this computer without erasing everything already on my iphone?
Everytime I try to use the option sync manual it wants me to erase everything.
Please helpThe iPhone can be synced to one and only one computer at a time. Before you "marry" it to your new computer, be sure your new computer contains all the old computer's information. When you sync the iPhone to a new computer, it will be erased first. Then, whatever is on your iTunes Library will be synced to the iPhone.
Read: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
You can also copy its previous backup from the old computer to the new one, then "restore from backup".
From iTunes: About iOS backups
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key. -
How can I find out the previous service provider my device is still registered with?
When trying to create a BIS account, I received the error message that my device was already registered with a different service provider and that I would have to reregister it. The problem is that I bought it new from cordlessphoneworld.co.uk and it was supposedly "completely refurbished".
My Pearl 8100 is a BT phone, however BT confirmed to me that it was not registered with their network. The seller, cordlessphoneworld.co.uk, told me to contact BlackBerry support, and BB support told me to talk to my service provider (O2 UK) who has already told me I would have to get in touch with the previous service provider.
How can I get my BB released from its current BIS registration, or at least find out who it is registered with, in order to finally enjoy its full functionality and not just the regular phone stuff?
My BB info:
PIN: *********
IMEI: #################
Happy for any help or ideas!!
Thanks.
EDIT: Removed personal information
Message Edited by Andy on 08-30-2009 02:33 PMTheres a high chance it was set up with the original carrier that is was sold with.
To find this out you need to get the vendor id of the device.
Do this by holding down (all at the same time ) the ALT+CAP+H button..
Or
Whilst pressing down ALT, select E Then S then C then R
You should see a little page pop up with random info.
What you are looking for is the vendor ID. a three digit number.
Then I will post a list of all the vendors IDS at the end of this message as i can't remember the link..
Anyhow, find the carrier from the list and call them asking them to release the PIN..
IF... the prev user didn't register it with that carrier (which would mean you phone has possibly been used twice before) then you can call your current Carrier and ask them to escalate the call to RIM who will be able to tell...
Hope this helps..

How can I wipe out Windows completely?
Hi all,
Since my attempt yesterday to have a go at Windows 8 was a bit of a flop due to bad drivers, I erased the Bootcamp partition with Disk Utility and merged it back to the main one, and went on using my Mac as per usual.
But this morning when I switched it on, guess what... it tried to boot Windows and gave me the black screen with "no bootable disk blah blah", so now I have to start it pressing the Option key even if there's (suppossedly) no trace of Windows.
Any hints on how to completely wipe it out?
I'm on a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010 running 10.6.8.
Thanks!Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select OS X. To delete Windows, you have to use Boot Camp Assistant

With an install CD, you boot from the CD by holding down the C key at startup. Then go to "drive setup" and format the drive, choosing the option to zero data once.

How can i wipe out my personal info from my mac
i would like to know how i can wipe all my personalyy info from my mac

1: The absolute best way Grade A method would be to remove the storage drive and replace with another, melt the old drive in a +1500º F kiln, or smash it to tiny bits with a sledgehammer / hydraulic press and distribute the pieces into the trash as widespread as possible.
Then hold c booting from a OS X install disk (10.6 or earlier if th emachine came with that) or hold option key booting from a 10.7 install USB ($69, no user ID associated) and install your OS onto the new drive and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
2: If you don't want to replace the drive but don't want a wealthy individual, corporation or government using special equipment to read most of your data.
Then hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase with 7x overwrite on the OS X boot partition will do. Takes many hours to complete.
There might be small bits left in mapped off sectors, journaled drives, your basically trusting the drive makers / OS maker to erase your drive completely. Then reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
3: If you don't want to replace the drive, not all that paranoid, but don't want most anyone using special software like DataRescue to read your deleted data off the drive, then hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase with Zero will do. Takes about a few hours. Then reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
4: If your not the least bit concerned someone could read your deleted data, simply hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase (with Security Option will do.) Takes about a few seconds. Then quit DU, reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen. -
How can I find out if an installation of Unified Development Server is 128 or 40 bit encryption
I have UDS installed, I would like to know whether its 128 or 40 bit encryption
UDS 3.5 and above include cryptography support. This comes as direct access to cryptography primitives as well as indirect access when using the builtin SSLExternalConnection class that supports SSL 3.0. The early versions shipped two different cryptography strengths are required by export controls. The latest versions of UDS are now allowed to ship the higher strength encryption to all customers. My previous post gave a way to determine which cryptography support was installed in your installation.

How can I print out all notes or export the entire file?
I have around 300 notes that include a variety of information. I would like to print out a hard copy. I don't want to open and print out each one individually. Is there a way to print out all of them at once. Also, is there a way export the file so I can open it in another application like Excel or Word?
It's not a file, so you can't "open" one file. Every message (and note) is a single file on the computer.
This Applescript will grab all the notes in the selected mailbox (i.e. the selected Notes item in Mail) and put them in a textEdit document.
Note that Mail doesn't differentiate between a note and an email message, so if you run this while a normal email mailbox is selected, it will gather all of your email messages.
tell application "Mail"
set theMailboxes to the selected mailboxes of message viewer 0
repeat with aMailbox in theMailboxes
set theNotes to the messages of aMailbox
set theText to ""
repeat with aNote in theNotes
set theText to theText & content of aNote & return
end repeat
end repeat
end tell
tell application "TextEdit"
set myDocument to make new document at end of documents with properties {text:theText}
end tell
Copy and paste this into a new AppleScript Editor Document, select the Notes mailboxes you want to print the notes from, and click the Run button (Green button with arrow).
This may take a while. -

TS1441 How to get ipod out of recovery mode without erasing everything?
All I did was plug in my ipod to update it to 6.1 and then it somehow got into recovery mode, and I don't want all my bookmarks and pictures to be erased! I plugged it into the exact same computer I always do. Somehow when itunes opened though it acted like it was a new program...when it wasnt.
Finish the recovery and then restore from your backup.

Well, when I bought my system, a 160GB 10K rpm system drive seemed more than adequate. Hmm. It seems that when I started the day, I had less than 20GB left and I need more than that just to defrag the drive. So, I decided I could live without the Pro
