How can memory be increased in Windows?

I have a problem with memory. While making many assignments of a certain class I run out of memory (Java.OutOfMemoryException) in Win 98. However with the same program and same amount of assignments I don't run out of memory in Win NT. Is there differences how they handle memory? Can memory be extended in Win 98?

i dont know about the differences between windows98 and nt, but you could increase memory for the vm with this settings at the command line:
-Xmsn
Specify the initial size, in bytes, of the memory allocation pool.
This value must be a multiple of 1024 greater than 1MB. Append the letter k or K to indicate kilobytes, or m or M to indicate megabytes. The default value is 2MB.
Examples:
-Xms6291456
-Xms6144k
-Xms6m
-Xmxn
