How can my own hard drive be considered off line to find referenced files?

my iPhoto library for some reason could not be imported to Aperture when I converted to Aperture.
However, I selected the option to create a referenced library and it worked fine.
I upgraded my hard drive from 160 to 750 at a professional apple reseller and they copied all of my data, programs etc as well.
While I never checked to see if this was the case before, becuase I had no reason to check for it, I notice now that all of the aperture thumbnails have the "reference offline" icon and when i try to "locate reference", I can do so, but Aperture still considers my own hard drive offline!!! How's that for strange.

Every hard drive has a volume name (they also have a UUID but I don't think Aperture cares about that.) If the new drive was not given the same name as your old drive then as far as Aperture is concerned, the drive it's looking for is not present (it's looking for a drive with a specific name and not finding it.)
While YOU know that all the data on the old hard drive was copied to the new hard drive, Aperture doesn't know that (and makes no assumptions). So if the volume name it's looking for isn't found, then the drive is "offline". Aperture is working as it should.
You could rename the hard drive back to the original name, but then that would just cause it lose all any new 'referenced' masters you added since upgrading the drive.
To fix:
You'll need to reconnect the masters. In the lower right corner of the thumbnail you should see a small icon which ordinarily has a tiny rectangle with an arrow pointing away (indicating this image is a "referenced" master). If the master is missing you'll have a little orange triangle with the "!" inside it (indicating a problem).
In the main menu, select "File" -> "Locate Referenced Files..."
A box will appear and you can check the box which reads "Show Only Files Not Found" (this will hide all the files which are currently fine so that you only have to deal with the files that have a problem.)
In the lower part of the panel is filesystem browser. You can navigate to the directory drive & directory where these files are located and click "Reconnect" or, if they're all in the same place, "Reconnect All".
Pick "Done" when you've finished.
If you don't like using "referenced" masters, you can tell Aperture to bring the masters into the Aperture Library so that it will manage the files for you (and avoid this problem in the future). In the main menu pick "File" -> "Consolidate Masters". You'll be given the choice to "copy" the files (it'll copy the masters but still leave the old files back in their original locations... but Aperture will no longer need those originals.) or you can "move" the files (Aperture will copy them into the library then delete the original after the copy is completed... effectively "migrating" the masters into your library and cleaning up the originals when it's done.

My MBP is indeed non-retina.
I also have Apple care support for 3 years
I was in touch with Apple suport since last week. Response I got on Phone was pretty astounding (waiting email confirmation). They say following
- Apple support does not provide such service of upgrading hard drive
- Doing it yourself means you will lose warranty (due to nature of operation one would need to perform on the computer)
- None of authorised delars will provide such a service
So as such there apparantly is no way to get your hard drive upgraded without losing warranty.
Leaves me a bit perplexed
I do understand MBP retina (or iPAD / iPhones) are manufactured in way that makes it technically impossible to upgrade certain parts. But why non-retina MBP?
What do you all think? is this reasonable? is this what a MBP customer would expect?

I have only about 30 gb left on my hard drive. I have a mac book pro I bought in 2013. I've deleted or transferred to an external hard drive
as much material as possible. How can I find out what is taking up all the room?? My dropbox always says it can't sync because I don't have

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

How can I upgardge hard drive with mac osx 10.8

Looking to upgrade the hard drive on our 2009 iMac. What do I need to in Time Machine and or Mountain Lion to swap out drives?

I've used both IcyDock and G-Drive enclosures.
The prices vary quite a bit and you get what you pay for.
I don't know what type of ports you have on that iMac, but if you have Firewire 800, you might consider paying the extra bit for an enclosure that supports that. Much faster transfer rate.
The other thing to look for, and it might be a little difficult to dig out, is you need an enclosure that can support the 3 TB drive. The newer ones will likely support that big a drive, but the older ones (likely being sold at a discount) may not.
From what I have read (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/imac-aluminum-faq/imac-intel-21.5-inc h-27-inch-aluminum-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive.html), the drive is a 3.5" drive, so the link Clinton posted won't work.
And, according to that article, the drive is somewhat special in that you can't just buy any hard drive. Make sure you find a Hard drive specifically designed for that iMac.
Also, based on that article I posted, you may need to do some more research on what exactly Apple does to the drive for the iMac, as it may not work in any enclosure.

Okay, Rod and Barry. I've read both of your posts half a dozen times, and all I am is confused. You guys are too smart for our own good.
Most folks here don't have a lot of huge files they are dealing with. The automatic optimization will work for most.
While I believe a bootable clone would be a desirable backup, a lot of people here don't have a method to achieve that (i.e., an external drive or second computer with a large enough drive to accommodate such a backup).
I make do with backing up my home folder to my eMac's hard drive now and then (not as often as I should) and am longing for an external hard drive to learn how to do a bootable clone as backup. Many people here don't even have a means to backup their Home Folder.
What do you advise to them? Certainly, if you are working with PhotoShop or other large files, you need an external hard drive, and probably (almost assuredly) have one. But most people posting here use their iBooks the way your wife uses hers, Barry, without the luxury of having you to do regular maintenance on it.
Guys, keep your audience in mind here, please. What do you advise we masses do in the way of maintenance? (I have been using my iBook since January of 2004, and have done nothing more sophisticated to the hard drive than repairing the hard drive, repairing permissions, using DiskWarrior two or three times to rebuild the directory--when necessary, i.e., glitchy, and an Archive and Install in July of 2004 when DiskWarrior wouldn't do its trick.)
It is quite possible that our original poster may be experiencing a slowdown and would benefit from the advice to simply repair the hard drive and permissions.
Brainbush, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

How can I wipe hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks?

If you have Yosemite installed and want to reinstall it, do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

I just got an apple 750gb Sata internal hard drive. I wanted to add the 750 gb to the original hard drive because i'm running out of space. By mistake I used that 750gb as the time machine hard drive. How can I erased the time machine and used the brand new 750 Gb sata as an add on to increase the total capacity of my computer.

You can't "add" one drive to another. You have to create your RAID which deletes current data. Then copy/restore files.
And anytime you want to create a RAID, use the same make and model drives.
Usually using one drive for OS/Apps and 2nd drive for scratch, 3rd for data is a good start. Then put your RAID in an external setup for such purposes or for a larger multi-drive scratch array.
You can hood up 6 drives before you have to get into a $200 RAID controller.

How to move external hard drive (time machine) off airport extreme network?

For several years now, I've had an external hard drive connected to my airport extreme and it's servered as an awesome external back-up of my Macbook via Time Machine. However, now I've had to remove the external hard drive from my network (that's a whole other story). Anyway, when I connect the external hard drive to my MacBook, it doesn't recongize it as my Time Machine back-up. It is still looking for "My Book" on my network, which obviously doesn't exist anymore. Can I simply re-direct it to "my book" that is now connected via USB to my computer? Do I have to start over? If possible, I'd like to keep the back-ups I already had and simply continue with my new back-ups. Please advise! Thanks!

Honestly i cannot remember sorry, i got it like 5 maybe 6 yrs ago and just started downloading things to it as the memory on the computer started filling up and when i wanted to see photos/videos on my TV.

I have a site done with iWeb (in my signature), published to .Mac. I need to have a copy of my site, to be burned on a CD and sent to somebody.
Publishing to a folder works fine, but the comments are gone (as well as the counters and passwords, but I can live without those). Syncing the iDisk on the Desktop does the same. Now I try to suck the site with WebGrabber, but I doubt I will have also the comments. Because I compared the source of one page with comments with the source of the same page without commnets, and the sources are identical. Where are those comments stored??
And how can I have a full copy of my site?
Or, if it's not possible, how can I add the comments "by hand"? (I'm not at all good in html...)

The comments are stored somewhere on .Mac... I don't think what you are trying to do is going to be possible or at least not very easy...
I guess you could add them by hand but you would probably make your site look a little screwy by adding that much to the html post-publishing.

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.

I installed the 320 GB Western Digital drive in my BlackBook and it runs great. I checked it against my 80 GB drive with XBench and it has better response time.
