How can one do a full system restore from Time Machine to a Macbook Air

I recently had a major crash on my two internal disc DualG5. The system internal disk failed completely and I used Time Machine to do a full system restore to the second internal disc. It worked PERFECTLY!! I followed the instructions in support

This involved inserting the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and backing up from my external LaCie time machine backup.
I also have a MacBook Air. I use an external USB HD drive as Time Machine backup. The Air only has one USB port. I have an external DVD drive for the Air. Clearly, I will not be able to mount the DVD and External disk at the same time unless I use a small hub. I guess this will work but is there any other work around. Could I do a full reinstall and then connect the external HD?

Alternatively, you could use Remote Disc Sharing (via the DualG5) to do the install and reserve the USB port for the Time Machine disk.

Will a system restore from Time Machine erase any of the data that is currently on the Mac and not in the Time Machine?

We had a lot of data on our Mac (i.e. photos, iTunes libraries etc) which we backed up via Time Machine. The hard disk corrupted so we had to get it wiped. When we got it back, my parents started using the mac as per usual but they didn't do a full System Restore from Time Machine. So, if I do a full restore now, will it erase any of the new photos, musc etc that is currently on the mac?

The Time Machine restore will only restore what is on Time Machine. Making a clone is probably a better means of ensuring whatever data you want recovered gets recovered together with Time Machine.
Generally speaking, applications that are newer than the operating system from Apple that are included with the operating system are not supported. So in your data recovery process from your clone, you'll have to be careful what data you choose to copy back.

Downloads folder missing after system restore from Time Machine

I installed a new HDD, installed Leopard, and the did a system restore from Time Machine. Everything seems to work fine except from a big question mark in the dock, where downloads folder should be. Any suggestions pls?

Probably the problem originated from excluding the Downloads folder from my backup, although it should have been there in my new installation. The interesting thing was that this folder were nowhere to be found in the Finder, and by trying to download something from Safari, it just wouldn’t.
I did a Repair Permissions from the HDD, not the Leopard DVD, and all came back to normal.
I have to admit, that coming from The Win world, this HDD replacement was the easiest and fastest ever, by far!

System Restore from Time Machine Back up and Mail

I have around 16,000 Messages in my Mail 3.2 Inbox. I use Gmail IMAP service. One thing I like about Mail is that next to all my messages there are these arrows that indicate whether I have replied to or forwarded a particular message and clicking on them takes me to my response to a particular email.
I need to reformat my MBP HD and want to do a system restore through Time Machine.
My question is, will Mail return to my current state (with all the arrows and tags) after I do the complete restore from Time Machine.
Any help on this is highly appreciated.

Ah, ok, that rules that out.
I think it wasn't backing up because it was showing I had files on the external but I couldn't locate them. It's my understanding that the external must be blank to back your computer up with time machine.
No, it doesn't have to be empty (although Time Machine works best if it has its own, exclusive space). Without the error message(s), we don't know what is/was wrong.

I have not run a Repair Disk Permissions. I am not sure how to do that? Is that also located in the Disk Utility.

I tried to just run the update from the update software option in the apple on the top left. I also then ran the combo that I downloaded from the apple site.
With what results? Did they compete? If not, what message did you get?

Cannot restore from Time Machine or Reinstall - MacBook Pro Yosemite

Hi all,
I recently started using a new Mac (Macbook Pro 15" with Yosemite) about 2 weeks ago. Upon startup it asked whether I wanted to encrypt and I said yes. It then froze for about 30min with the spinny wheel. After the startup was finally complete I used it normally for the next two weeks but the FileVault encryption in Security & Privacy never completed. It was stuck on "encryption paused" and underneath said "Connect to power adapter to continue encryption". Nothing I did fixed the problem. I then did a Time Machine Backup onto a USB with plans to restore from Time Machine. The backup went successfully with no issues. I put the Mac into recovery mode (command+R) and did Restore from Time Machine Backup. It was able to find my Time Machine Backup on the USB, and in the next window "Select a Destination" it found my HD. I clicked restore and there was an immediate error saying that I should restart the computer and try again. From then on in "Select a Destination" it now says "No Time Machine backups were found." This is strange because I already selected the time machine backup and should be looking for a destination now, but regardless nothing can be found.
From there I went to Disk Utility and verified. There didn't appear to be anything wrong. I did repair disk and it didn't seem to do anything.
Then I tried to do a Reinstall OS X. On "Select the disk where you want to install OS X" the only options are my USB with the backup, or "Recovery HD". If I click Recovery HD there is a pop-up saying "This disk is locked." There are no other choices for install, and leaving Recovery mode doesn't appear to be possible.
Does anyone have a solution to this? So far my experience with Yosemite on two different macs has been torture and I do not recommend.

You have a warranty. Take it back and ask the store to fix it for you. You do not need to encrypt the drive, but the Yosemite installation does so automatically unless you select the option not to do so during the install process. You need to look for that carefully. As of now you would need to turn off FV2 to decrypt the drive which takes about as much time as encryption does - quite a while unless you have a small capacity SSD.

Full backup system restore from time machine

Help: I need to rebuild my system from Time Machine.
I am using iMac with 10.6.8. I plan to replace my HDD.
When trying to emulate the system restoration, I used the MAC Install DVD, which allowed accessing the Time Machine external disk.
However, TM suggested only one full backup dated 3/2011......
Can't time machine use all incremental steps between 2011 and today? 3 years......
What should I do before changing my HDD? Any way to force TM to accept a full backup NOW?
And then, will Restore rebuild my system as I see it today?

The only one I've ever used is SuperDuper. It and Carbon Copy Cloner have free trail periods so you can experiment. I'm not familiar with the others.

IMac won't reboot after system restore from Time Machine

I just installed a wacom intuos pro tablet on my imac running snow leopard. The system clock reset to 1st Jan2000 and system prefenerces were no longer accesible. I performed a system restore from my time machine but now can't reboot. The restore completed succesfully (or so the it told me). When i restarted the imac i got the usual 'bing' followed by grey screen and spinning wheel swiftly followed by a light blue screen with the cursor in the top left hand corner.
There is sat for an hour befoe I switched off and tried again......same result.
The installation disc is still in the optical drive.
Any advice please on how to remidy this?

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM. You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

How can I migrate iTunes from time machine to new macbook air?

My old macbook died completely and will now not start up, so I cannot reauthorise it. I have everything backed up on time machine on an external hard drive (passport for mac). How can I just restore iTunes but nothing else? I cannot find any option to select what is restored. I don't want to put all the junk onto my new mac!

Full system restore using time machine - error

I have a mid-2010 17 inch MacBook Pro, currently in Afghanistan and my hard drive crashed. I have an external hard drive that I have used for time machine backups. Just installed my new hard drive, followed the instructions for using disk utility, system restore, etc. when I go to restore my system, it gives the following error:
"An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk. Restart your computer and then try restoring again."
I've restarted, I've used both the option key on boot up, command r, I've gone to Pondini's site for troubleshooting. Cannot get it to restore.
I'm not sure if I maybe need to reinstall Mountain Lion, I shouldn't because it should be in my backup HD. But downloading Mountain Lion here in Afghanistan is not plausible with my connection speeds. Over 100 hours download time.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Not Disk Utility. That is for restoring an IMAGE you made with Disk Utility. You need to boot the system from the original OS X install disc and use the option to restore from backup found in the Utilities menu item once the system boots from that OS X reinstall disc.
Or if you made your TM backup with Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks installed that TM backup drive has a copy of the Recovery HD files on it and you can boot the system from that drive.

Can't install Mavericks, damaged disk, restore from Time Machine, unable to find destination disk. What to do?

After downloading Mavericks, tried installing, it told me that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. My only option was the Mac HD icon with a "?" on top of it, unable to verify disk. With the "continue" button grayed out, I hit the back button a few times in an attempt to start over. I went back to the install page and it started installing. 40 minutes later it was up and running. Every thing seemed fine. I tried opening GarageBand, I got the spinning wheel. Then a prompt page asking me to select a language. I selected English and the computer shutdown. It being late and I being frustrated, I decided to wait until morning.
On startup I got the message that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. This time there was no icon or anything to choose from.
I'm wondering if I need to use my original Mac mini, Mac OS X install DVD, or is it time for a trip to the Apple store.
Ideas and options welcome.

It sounds as if your hard drive may have failed or may be failing. Boot your computer from the REcovery Disk by holding down the Command+R keys during the boot. From the Recovery drive you can run Disk Utility. Once in DU select your hard drive then run "Repair Disk".
If errors are found and repaired run Repair Disk a second time.
If errors are found and not repaired you are going to need a more robust volume repair utiity such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius and an external drive to boot from to run the repairs or...

I wanted to replace my old drive with a new larger drive. Once the blank new drive is in the imac, how does one do a full system restore to the new blank drive? Is that possible? And before removing that old drive, should I first do some other type of time machine backup manually? Do I need to do a final FULL backup first? And can time machine do a full restore to a new blank drive, restoring everything as before?

Hi randy, you don't say which OS version you're on.
Very best would be an actual clone to another external drive you can boot from.
Likely you'll need to Format the new drive first...

Can I restore from Time Machine?

I used Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro, ever since it first came out. About a year ago, I decided to replace my external hard drive and bought a new one - bigger, faster and Firewire. Now I'm about to buy a new MBP and am wondering if I need to have my OLD Time Machine hard drive or can I do a full new computer setup from my NEW hard drive?
I guess the question is, since I changed hard drives, can I do a full system restore from just one, the latest, TM hard drive?

Your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your stuff, when the new Mac first starts up. It automatically uses the most recent backup on the drive you select, so yes, select the new one.

Your profile indicates that you currently have an older version of Snow Leopard (10.6.2). In order to install Lion, a prerequisite is the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Perhaps a few more details would be helpfull in solving your problem. ex. If all you want to do is to upgrade to Lion, a restoration of data is unneccessary. Download the latest version of Snow Leopard and then download (purchase) and install Lion. User data will remain intact.
