How can one restore or replace apps lost in a hard drive crash? All usual channels exhausted.

I've restored most of our files from various backup sources but roughly half of our apps have not been restored to our computer. The Apps section in iTunes lists them all, but half have the circled-exclamation-point icon, meaning the files cannot be found (nor does a search on the computer &/or external hard drive find them). The iTunes App Store "Purchased" section does have a list of all purchased apps, but when clicking on a "lost" one, it says that it has already been purchased. There is the "download from iCloud" icon on a few of them (but not most), but not for the ones I really want.
Is there another way to reaquire the apps I've already purchased, but have been lost due to an iMac hard drive crash?

I don't know about apps but with music if there is an entry in iTunes, even if broken, iTunes thinks the item is there and doesn't need downloading. There the cure is to delete the item completely from iTunes and redownload.

Do a Time Machine backup to an external drive. It backs up everything.
Instead of restoring from time machine backup, go into time machine and drag out the things you want to restore.

Hey guys I hope this isn't confusing... but! My motherboard on my computer died yesterday, and I had to buy another computer. I had 2 hard drives in my old computer and also an usb external drive that had all my music on it. Now here is the problem... I only had enough room in my new computer to add 1 extra drive so I put the bigger drive in, but that is not the drive that itunes was installed on. So I was going to download itunes but then realized I would not be able to get my settings back. So here is what I did. I installed the drive that itunes was on to another computer so I can access the hard drive.
So my question is I guess, Is there a file that I can take off that old hard drive and copy it over or import it into my new itunes that was just installed so I don't have to resetup all my ipods ( I have 2 iphones 2 videos, and 1 touch) remember that all the music and video files are on the usb drive so I can just set itunes to look in that drive for the files. it is just the settings that I am looking to import.

It's your PC that needs to be authorized, not the iPods. If you didn't authorize your old PC before it crashed, you have lost one of the 5 authroizations, but I wouldn't worry about it - once you reach 5 authroizations you can deauthorize all, once per year.

Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.

Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;

This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....." You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in USA. We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net. We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account. We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

Sounds like your files are playing from the external drive already. To check go to iTunes - Preferences - Advanced and check the Media Folder Location. Change it to the external drive if you need to.

I needed to restore the phone and I didnt realize my back-up was 1yr old, and now the phone is restored and I've got a year old contact list and iMessage chat history. Luckily my iMessage on the Mac is still valid and has all the chat history. My question is how can I restore iMessage chats on my iPhone 4 from my Mac? If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.

I've never seen this error but I'd assume that it can be fixed the same way many Mac application errors are: open your Library folder and look inside the Preferences folder for the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist file and throw it away.
