How can we get Apple to correct this issue?

I have been a supporter and user of Apple since the IIe days.  I still have a G4 on my desktop that works just fine with the software that was useful for those times.  I have worked with a laptop Mac Pro since the fall of 2007 without any real major issues.  However, I am now having all types of problems with the new Maverick OS which I installed about two months ago.  In fact, I actually went to an apple support store and actually paid significant money to have them correct the problems which they said had to do with my keyboard.  I did mention that I wasn't having the problems until I installed Maverick, but they didn't mention that many people were having any problems with that OS.  I'm so used to everything working smoothly with Macs that I didn't even suspect an OS upgrade would create such havoc.  I'm very disappointed with what is happening. It all started when I received a message that some software package would no longer be supported for my Snow Leopard, and I needed to upgrade to Maverick. Since doing so, my computer has done all kinds of goofy things.  The worst issue is on startup.  My sign in screen comes up and I can't move my cursor.  If I hook up a wireless mouse, the cursor will move and I can get into the password position, but I can't get it to take a typed password or react to anything.  I finally started taking the battery out of the laptop for 30 seconds and re-installing it and that process would seem to get results, but it seems to be getting less successful. I like some of the features of the new OS, but it is giving me so much trouble with startup that I'm very frustrated. I also noticed that my power light does not stay lit when the computer is on. The battery shows a full charge, so I don't think it is a battery issue. Has anyone else had this problem.

Given your description, at least some of the problems you're experiencing are probably due to woefully outdated software on a seven year old MBP.
It's also possible that more memory would alleviate the symptoms, since Mavericks will run in 2 GB, but 4 GB is a more realistic minimum. You can install as much a 6 GB in your MBP, but without additional information it is impossible to conclude more RAM alone is going to solve what's wrong.
If you don't know where to start consider running EtreCheck and posting its results as explained below. It will provide a quick summary of your system configuration, to preclude the need for a dozen time-consuming questions. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting.
There are five separate parts to it; please consider everything and reply with your results. The prerequisite (Part 0) is labeled that way because it is more important than anything else.
Part 0
The first task you must do is to satisfy yourself that you have adequate, reliable backups, since what you describe may presage an impending disk failure. If you value the data on your Mac, you should have backups even if everything is working normally.
Part 1
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the next step.
Part 2
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
Part 3
Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
Part 4
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Vertical line issue - How can we get Apple to address this?

    Hi guys,
As can be seen in this forum (and a lot of other forums, as well), a lot of people are experiencing this problem on their 17" iMac G5 with iSight. Here are some pertinent details (which may be familiar to a lot of people but can be a primer for those who are just starting to experience the problem):
    1. For most of us, these lines started appearing between 13-15 months after they purchased them. The lucky ones either had these failures occur during the first 12 months, or had APP.
    2. The majority of these units can be traced to the Shanghai factory W8 (enter your S/N in this website to get the manufacturing information of your unit: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html).
    3. A similar issue occurred (or is occurring) with 17" PBs. From what I have read on the Apple PB forums, it seems that this has been a long standing issue and Apple has SUPPOSEDLY attempted to censor some of the posts discussing this. Note that these units can also be traced back to the same Shanghai factory.
    4. The "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" which certain people have always been referring users to on posts discussing this type of problem obviously refers to a totally different issue (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/) and is applicable only to first gen iMac G5s. I'm sure that everyone appreciates it but, at this point, it is quite clear that it is not the solution to our problem.
    5. Based on the number of posts discussing this very same problem in the Apple forums, it is pretty obvious that these are not isolated issues. There are too many similarities (time of failure, how the numbers of line increase over time, manufacturing source, etc.)
    6. Some people have suggested that unstable power sources may be the primary cause of the problem. However, based on the locations of the people with these problems who have posted in this forum, it seems unlikely. From what I can see, the problem happens whether you are from a highly industrialized country (where a stable power source can be expected) or a developing country (where power sources MAY be more unstable).
    7. Apple has typically responded (to anyone who has taken the time to write or have their iMacs inspected) that this is not a known manufacturing defect issue. As such, the cost to repair this problem, which can go up to USD 500, will have to be borne by the owner.
    8. Based on posts of some people who have had their units repaired, it is the LCD that has to be replaced. This is also supported by posts from people who have resorted to purchase a separate display as a workaround.
Now, the question is, *how do we get Apple to address this issue*? Do we all start writing Steve Jobs about it? Do we go to the press? Should we put up a website and Digg it to death? A spoof video on YouTube? MySpace? Or will we just suffer in silence? Suggestions anyone?
P.S. Suggestions that involve any sort of violence or industrial sabotage are not acceptable, please.
Note that Ale_Tog has put up a Flickr page where we can post photos of our poor iMacs. Just send the photo to [email protected] with the subject "Dead pixels on iMac". No text, just the photo attachment. (+Ale_Tog, if you read this, I hope you don't mind me posting this here. Also, I suggest that we at least put the first 5 chars of the serial number, the factory information which can be retrieved on the link in #2 above, and which country the unit is based.+). I highly recommend that everyone send a photo to show that these are not isolated issues.
To get an idea on how many people are experiencing this problem, here are a list of posts in these forums, as well as others, discussing this issue (feel free to add to this):

Please start sending your suggestions. The more the many-ier!

Yep. I feel Apple's 1 year manufacturer warranty for the iMac is not adequate, especially for an all-in-one unit with a relatively high price.
My iMac G5 started displaying a vertical cyan line about 4 weeks ago, only about 19-20 months after I bought it for Christmas in 2005.
I called up Apple to enquire what could be done and was told by their customer service that a rather long period had elasped since the warranty expired in 2006. So I was told to take the iMac to an authorised repair centre and Apple will not contribute to the cost of the repair.
I expect respectable service life from my computer and anything less than 5 years is totally unacceptable. Thus I seriously question the value proposition for the iMac in this respect. Does it mean that I have to replace my iMac every 2 years? The computer still feel reasonably zippy, I still have plenty of space left on my hard drive, but the screen is failing ...
Today another line (green) appeared on the screen ...
It is my understanding that a number of LCD monitor manufacturers are now providing 3 year warranties for their products. Now why should Apple only provide a 1 year warranty? Especially when the replacement option will cost more than buying an entire new LCD monitor with even better specifications?
Based on the number of responeses I have seen here, this is not a rare occurance and I seriously question their quality control in their manufacturing process. I think Apple should be responsible for these repairs, and also provide a 3-year warranty for their LCD screens.
My iMac's serial number is W8548Zxxxxx.
Sincerely yours, an unhappy Apple customer.

  • The lcd screen of my 15-inch Macbook Pro (mid 2009) is separating from the case. The glue failed due to the heat.  How can I get Apple to fix this factory flaw?

The heat vented from the back of the laptop caused the glue to fail and now the screen is separating from back of the lcd case near the hinges. I know for a fact that this issue is known by Apple as I have seen the issue reported at least a dozen times.  This laptop was considerably more expensive than any comparable laptop at the time I bought it. I bought it believing that I was buying a quality product from a quality company.   I've owned many laptops and I have never seen anything like this.  My laptop is out of warranty but this is really besides the point.  This is clearly a factory defect that Apple should remedy.  What do I need to do to get Apple to fix this design flaw?

    Ask Apple.

Your credit card on file has expired
The credit card issuer has denied a charge

  • Tap to click not working properly in Mountain Lion. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

The tap to click does not work with mountain lion as it did before the mountain lion install. I purchased a brand new imac in August of 2011 and got a wireless keyboard and selected the wireless trackpad instead of a mouse.  The trackpad worked wonderful pre upgrade with tap to click. Now after the install of the newest beast, I have to actually press the trackpad rather than a slight tap. I have carpel tunnel and this is causing great stress upon my hand. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

Perhaps, I was not clear enough.
I have an imac purchased in Aug. 2011 which came with Lion 10.6 (two uprades before mountain lion)
Recently, I just purchased a macbook pro retina with Mountain Lion
On my imac, my settings allowed me to "tap to click" everything EXCEPT the initial log in at the star up of my imac, again running Lion 10.6
On my macbook pro retina which has Mountain Lion, I set up the "tap to click" option, but notice that a "hard" click was neccessary when trying to click things. I thought this was a macbook thing (my first one) so I went and upgraded my imac to Mountain LIon, BIG MISTAKE! Now both my imac AND my macbook only have limited "tap to click" options. Before mountain lion I could "tap" to highlight and select text, tap and drag, and many other thiings that Mountain Lion has disabled.
I am truly surprised that no one has noticed this MAJOR issue.
Is there a way to uninstall this update, similar to how on a PC you can go back to a restore point.
On another note even the way PREVIEW has changed is less user friendly, there used to be icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, now I have to double tap and select the option I would like to switch between contacts and thumbnails. This is really annoying and is causing me time when reviewing files.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I did go to system preferences -> trackpad -> select tap to click
In fact almost all of the trackpad functions have been selected.

  • How can I get Apple to approve an app created by a third party?

I was trying to install an app provided by Headwaters Economics (http://headwaterseconomics.org/tools/eps-hdt/download-eps-hdt-application). When I click the install button, however, my OS gives a message saying "'install.app' can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.:" The software in question is an add-on for Microsoft Excel, and it is crucial for acquiring data I use in research. The software is recommended by staff at the Bureau of Land Management. They have been working with me for a while on acquiring data. They suggest, and the online documentation at Headwaters Economics confirms, that this add-on app will fulfill my research needs. How do I get Apple to approve this app for installation.

There is no Apple approval process for this. Headwaters Economics needs to fork over the $99 to get a Developer ID so that people who install their software can be assured it came from them and isn't some malware masquerading as them. Until that happens, you will have to right click (or command click) and choose "Open" to get past the Gatekeeper.

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive.  Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth)  around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Google has a support notice that may explain the problem here: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/82350?hl=en
Apple has a built-in method for setting up Gmail accounts that makes sure that they are set up properly.
Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars. In the left-hand sidebar select the Add Account… item. In the main window select Gmail. Enter the information in the drop down sheet.
As for Pacbell I don't know what the proper settings are and could only find these from a third party so proceed with caution. http://www.emailserversettings.com/category/pacbell
