How can you tell if it is "publishing in the background"

I am publishing a new family website using iweb 08. Admitedly it is loaded with lotts of stuff - 10 galleries, 12 movies and a few blog entries and this is the first time I have published but it does seem to be taking rather a long time (8 hours so far).
Firstly is there any way of estimating how long it should take to publish? Secondly after I publish this main initial site I will only add bits - will each publish session last this long? Lastly is there anyway of telling whether iweb is "publishing in the background" or has somehow frozen and seeing how far it has progressed - the wheel next to my site name in the panel is on an almost invisible slither but it's been this way for two hours. In this time using the internet has been virtually impossible.
Most grateful for any replies.

One thing I do to see if the site is actually being updated is to open the Activity Monitor, and then the Network tab and look for the Red line (Data Sent) to be above zero. Depending on your connection speed you should have a more or less constant red line which would show that your Mac is sending data out the network port. I know I pushed a couple hundred MB of dta once and it took hours, but I could see that it was still sending, so I just had to tough it out.
As for estimating... there is the amount of data in Bytes, (or kilobytes or megabytes) divided by your upload speed, +/- any variances in that speed over time. That could give you a *ballpark time* to expect things to take.
An example might be a 4 MB file, sent with my upload speed (as measured by the Activity Monitor) of 64KB (Kilobytes, not Kilobits) of data transfer per second. Therefore my file is 4000 /64, or 62.5 seconds. In actual fact there was a brief drop in a test I just did where there was no data being sent so my send actually took about 75 seconds, but you get the idea.
Hope that helps.

How can you tell which songs are downloaded on the iPad from the cloud?

I know ipad albums are more like tagging photos rather than putting them in folders. I just have a nagging feeling I missed some pics and I have too many to try to go figure out one by one. I don't look at my photos from the camera roll, only from albums I tagged just because I imported photos from different sources and the dates and order is really messed up. I just want to know that I am viewing all the photos from like this vacation or that event and there's none I missed that are only in the camera roll.

You can see which apps are open and/or recently used by double-clicking the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the screen (not all apps that appear there are active) - you can then close apps on it by pressing and holding one of them for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar. If you have an app 'open' on-screen then it won't appear on the taskbar, you will need to go back to the homescreen first, and it should then show when you next open the taskbar.
If you haven't already got a copy then you can download the iPad manual from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

iPod touch version 4.2.1, how can I tell if programs are running in the background.  Battery is dead quickly and time/date reverts to Dec 31, 1969.  can see thin silver frame around screen like something is running in background.

You really can't tell unless you hear music or similar. Many are always listening for notifications and other things.
To preserve battery life see the following:

I leave mine in airplane mode when sleeping.

  • How can you tell if an iPod touch has the new apps?

Having seen the updates to the ipod Touch I'm finally ready to buy one. From the keynote I gather that new units shipping from the factory after 15 Jan have the new software, old units do not and, unusually for apple, even if you buy an old software unit after the announcement, you don't get the software for free. Worse still, I'm in one of those countries they sell the touch, but don't have an iTunes store, so if I buy an old one, I'm stuck with it, cannot upgrade.
Is there any way to tell from the box which version you have, change in part number, anything? I'm sure they aren't doing the M$ sticker approach "now with 1.1.3 and lots of new apps". The return policy out here in Singapore is basically you can't, so I need to figure out in the store if the box I'm buying is new, or old, and I have no clue at all how much stock is left out there.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello,
If you're going to buy in a real shop then why not have the retailer open the box for you. Especially if they don't do returns - that's a must.
The next suggestion is a little more hit-and-miss but the fourth and fifth digits of the Serial Number are the week of production. If you get a week 02 or later it should be okay. Perhaps someone with a brand new one could confirm.

  • How can I know what apps are running in the background of Q10

My battery is not lasting more than 12 hours even though I'm moderately using it. How can I tell which applications are running in the background?

As of now, the BB10 does not allow any apps to run in the background unless they are baked in the OS or in the active frames. So if an app is not in a active frame, no app is running in the background. try maximizing your battery by switching to wif whenever you have a wifi network.

  • How can you tell if a pic hasnt been tagged by iPhoto, and do you then...

How can you tell if a pic hasnt been tagged by iPhoto, and do you then do you then have to draw "missing box" around them
What I mean is tagged a few faces, imported some more pics, checked a few and they dont show as named faces, but are faces that are in my Faces source list (ie identified and named)
So do I then have to draw a box around known faces to me, and name them again (I think iPhoto will pop up as Im typing the names I already have)
It just means that even when i import and it doesnt name, I may have lots of pics that are of faces but not tagged and so not in my faces source list
    please help
    cheers
ps when are Apple going to upload the Getting Started manuals for iLife 09? its been a while since released now, ad they give a bit more insight than the video tutorials alone

No-one? It'll be nice to know how many pics of faces that arent yet tagged
    cheers

  • How can you tell if a file is being used in your project or not?

How can you tell if a file in your bin is being used in your project or not? My director dragged hundreds of reference files into my project and only used a few of them. I'd like to do some house cleaning and delete the ones that are not in use. This project file has 100 sequences in it, so it would be a tough manual hunt to figure this out.
In Premiere Pro (or Flash for example), where all the information is in the Project Bin such as in/out times and duration, there is where it tells you how many times that piece of media has been used or if it hasn't been used yet.
Can FCP tell me this info?
    Thanks for yout time!
    -Monty

    Monty,
Within FCP, there is a menu item called "Media Manager" (depending on what version you are in). This would be worth your while to look into. It basically organizes your project by moving/archiving any used assets of a project and leaving out un-used assets. It saves a ton of disk space.
For example, say you have a 5 minute clip with an in/out point that is just 30 seconds. Media Manager will "archive" just that 30 seconds, not the entire clip. There is even a setting that you can add additional "handles" time to the front andd back of the clip if you think you may need to add or change transition.
Do a google search. I was just watching a few Youtube videos on this myself.

  • How can you tell if your podcast is streaming or if you're playing from a download?

Yesterday I downloaded a podcast with the new Podcasts app on my iPhone. To play the podcast (while away from my WiFi), I tapped the episode in the Episodes list. I assumed I was playing the downloaded version. This morning, when I checked my data usage, it was 87MB more than it was yesterday! Does this mean that I inadvertently STREAMED the podcast instead? How can you tell?

This is the itunes forum.  Your question seems to have nothing to do with itunes.
Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.  Try those.

  • How can you tell which cabinet you are connected t...

As the title says, how can you tell once installed.
the reason i ask is where i live there is only the bt-pcp and the drl-fttc cabinet and no others.
from what i heard is that both BT and DRL occupy the same fttc cabinet, and this would suggest so based on other information received.
yet from other information i'm hearing is that they don't and we're probably wired all the way back to the exchange which i would have thought was a bit odd seeing with 3 miles from exchange (as the crow flies).
so is it possible that they use the same cabs?

    hi,
yeh am on infinity now and so far working fine
had one disconnection but thing that was caused by outage as took router a few attempts to re-connect, but other than that my pppoe has only dropped when made a change on router which required it to restart.
now been connected for 8 days without dropping (usually dropped every weekend when on DR) so continuing to monitor.
the engineer advised was connected via the cabinet in street, but only cabinets are the bt-pcp and the dr-fttc cabinets, and AFAIK BT and DR share the cabinet from what I've been previously told, but then someone else has said they won't do that and the connection is probably one that is underground if there is no bt-pcp.
i'll send Dean a message just so i know for future as i know the bt-pcp cabinet my number is connected too.
