How can you tell if software is legit?

Hey everyone. I'm looking around different websites trying to find a cheap version of a suite and am noticing that ALOT of deals are obviously not legal. But at the same time there are some the seem legit but I don't want to take a chance.
What are some things I can do to find out if a specific deal/software is the authentic thing?
I read somewhere about asking for the serial number and checking with adobe..but would the seller give away the serial number like that?

If you don't want to take a chance, buy from Adobe or a reputable reseller.
The fact that you're window shopping below the waterline on the offchance of
finding a non-existent, legitimate bargain suggests that you ARE willing to
take a chance. There will always be the element of doubt.

Of course not.
Use the rule of thumb: if you have to ask, it's probably not legit.
In the unlikely event that you manage to successfully install and even
activate a dodgy version, what happens when you:
a) try to register the software (50:50 chance but you don't want to take
chances)
b) try to install patches and updates that won't install or corrupt your
existing installation
c) find a bug
d) try to re-install it on another machine
e) want to upgrade in a couple of years (unlikely to work) when the rest of
the world moves to the next version
Think of investing in professional software as creating a relationship with
the manufacturer rather than trying to save a few bucks on some shady
software now.

Funny thing is that you can't see from the software update (in the software update group) in which deployment package(s) it exists. Your only options are manually comparing every single update (not really an option), or use PowerShell and do something

How can you tell if a pic hasnt been tagged by iPhoto, and do you then do you then have to draw "missing box" around them
What I mean is tagged a few faces, imported some more pics, checked a few and they dont show as named faces, but are faces that are in my Faces source list (ie identified and named)
So do I then have to draw a box around known faces to me, and name them again (I think iPhoto will pop up as Im typing the names I already have)
It just means that even when i import and it doesnt name, I may have lots of pics that are of faces but not tagged and so not in my faces source list
please help

How can you tell if a file is being used in your project or not?

How can you tell if a file in your bin is being used in your project or not? My director dragged hundreds of reference files into my project and only used a few of them. I'd like to do some house cleaning and delete the ones that are not in use. This project file has 100 sequences in it, so it would be a tough manual hunt to figure this out.
In Premiere Pro (or Flash for example), where all the information is in the Project Bin such as in/out times and duration, there is where it tells you how many times that piece of media has been used or if it hasn't been used yet.
Can FCP tell me this info?

Within FCP, there is a menu item called "Media Manager" (depending on what version you are in). This would be worth your while to look into. It basically organizes your project by moving/archiving any used assets of a project and leaving out un-used assets. It saves a ton of disk space.
For example, say you have a 5 minute clip with an in/out point that is just 30 seconds. Media Manager will "archive" just that 30 seconds, not the entire clip. There is even a setting that you can add additional "handles" time to the front andd back of the clip if you think you may need to add or change transition.
Do a google search. I was just watching a few Youtube videos on this myself.

I know ipad albums are more like tagging photos rather than putting them in folders. I just have a nagging feeling I missed some pics and I have too many to try to go figure out one by one. How can you tell if your podcast is streaming or if you're playing from a download?

Yesterday I downloaded a podcast with the new Podcasts app on my iPhone. To play the podcast (while away from my WiFi), I tapped the episode in the Episodes list. I assumed I was playing the downloaded version. This morning, when I checked my data usage, it was 87MB more than it was yesterday! Does this mean that I inadvertently STREAMED the podcast instead? As the title says, how can you tell once installed.
the reason i ask is where i live there is only the bt-pcp and the drl-fttc cabinet and no others.
from what i heard is that both BT and DRL occupy the same fttc cabinet, and this would suggest so based on other information received.
yet from other information i'm hearing is that they don't and we're probably wired all the way back to the exchange which i would have thought was a bit odd seeing with 3 miles from exchange (as the crow flies).
so is it possible that they use the same cabs?

yeh am on infinity now and so far working fine
had one disconnection but thing that was caused by outage as took router a few attempts to re-connect, but other than that my pppoe has only dropped when made a change on router which required it to restart.
now been connected for 8 days without dropping (usually dropped every weekend when on DR) so continuing to monitor.
the engineer advised was connected via the cabinet in street, but only cabinets are the bt-pcp and the dr-fttc cabinets, and AFAIK BT and DR share the cabinet from what I've been previously told, but then someone else has said they won't do that and the connection is probably one that is underground if there is no bt-pcp.
i'll send Dean a message just so i know for future as i know the bt-pcp cabinet my number is connected too.

Easiest way is to open the clip using QuickTime Player. Then click Command-I to open the inspector.
(Or click WINDOW/INSPECTOR)

Only way is by looking. Just look at the dislay at an angle, and if you see a reflection it's glossy.
