How can you tell if you Mac is overheating?

How can you tell if your MAC is overheating or running too hot?

Make sure you are using your MBP properly as it is not a "laptop."
According to the user manual it states in part:
"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."
MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
"Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn."

• How can I tell if my mac has the Apple "quite kit"?

Hi, how can I tell if my dual processor 1.42 ghz fw800 mac has the Apple "quite kit"? I've had it with the loud noise now. I can hear the fans from other rooms.
If my mac does have the kit, I'll definitely look into upgrading the fans. Which fan brand is the best for this model mac?
Thanks a lot!

Hi, and welcome to the Discussions!
Check the PSU. It should be a 360 watt model and not a 400 watt model. Also, the fans should be manufactured by Papst, not Sensflow. Here's a good link with info on this subject.
I am under the impression that the FW800 Macs all shipped with the quiet kits installed and that the mods were meant for the MDD Macs, though I could be wrong...

• How can I tell if my Mac Mini has what it takes to support Windows XP OS?

I need some help understanding how the whole Windows OS thing works with my Mac mini. I'm totally clueless about it.
The first thing I would like to know is if my Mac has enough memory & power to accommodate the additional Windows OS without compromising its performance?
Here's a list of what I have to work with. I have no idea about what any of this means but I'm hoping someone can use the info to assess my needs.
Model Name: Mac mini
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 1.25 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
When I bought my Mac mini I was told that its ROM size was 80GB. I partitioned the HD into 2 HDs when I select them individually & choose get info, one partition says MacHD1 Capacity: 39.88GB & the second partition says MacHD2 Capacity: 34.21GB. When I total up the memory capacity of both partitions I get a total of 74.09. What happened to the remaining 5.91GB?
Would it still be possible to install Windows on at least one HD partition or would it be better if I joined the two HD partitions (after reinstalling MacOS) & then install Windows?
Assuming that my Mac has the necessary memory & speed to run Windows, how do I begin the process of installing the Windows OS on my Mac? And, in the same respect, assuming that it doesn't meet the sufficient standards, then what can I do, if anything, to improve my Mac's performance so that it can support the additional OS?
Also, I have Virtual PC with Windows XP installer. When I bought VPC I was told that the package contained the full version of Windows XP OS. Can I use this software to install Windows XP, without installing VPC, or will I have to purchase the XP installation disc? Basically I would be buying something that I already have & I would like to avoid this if possible.
That's all. Any information would be helpful & greatly appreciated. THANX!

Thanks for responding. I've actually decided to just throw myself in with the wolves and buy Windows XP along with Parallels Desktop and figure it all out on my own.
Thank You!

• How can I tell whether my Mac Pro is using the bluetooth dongle or not?

I got myself a bluetooth dongle to get around the terrible internal BT signal. When it's in use, it alleviates all my troubles and I can actually stroll halfway down the hall and still type accurately.
However, it seems that every time I reboot, it must stop using the dongle and use the internal, because I then get the terrible signal of the internal antenna. The only way to convince my computer to use the dongle, is to unplug and plug it back in. Then I have to delete all my bluetooth devices and pair them again!
So yes, I am seeking a two-part solution.
Firstly, I'd like to know if there's anywhere in System Profiler, BT Preferences, Terminal, etc that will just inform me of WHICH bluetooth my computer is using.
Secondly, I'd ideally want to set it to default to the dongle. If this isn't possible, at least the first part would let me know when I need to arduously re-do my settings.
Thank you very, very much. Usually this isn't that big an issue, as I only rarely need to move my peripherals off my desk, but I got a Magic Mouse earlier this week and its extremely clear it doesn't have as strong an antenna or whatever as the Mighty Mouse, and it starts going erratic if I move it so much as a foot from the Mac Pro tower.

I have the same problem and I cannot find any way to turn off the internal bluetooth without killing all bluetooth including the dongle. If someone has a way to turn off the internal bluetooth I want to see it.
Thanks

• I clicked on an email link for what appeared to be a legitimate message from LinkedIn. It wasn't, and the link opened a page for drugs. Since then, my internet connection has been slow. How can I tell if my Mac has been hacked?

Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

• How can I tell is my Mac is compromised?

A few weeks ago, I imported a few CDs into iTunes. A new folder showed up on my desktop that was titled "Voeg automatisch toe aan iTunes." (It means "automatically add to iTunes" in Dutch. I'm American and using a US Mac.) I didn't think much of it except that it was a weird Mac bug. (Unfortunately, there is only one other person I found via Google who had the problem with iTunes creating a weird Dutch folder, and no one answered him.)
But yesterday, I logged into my Google Webmaster Tools account for the first time in over a year. Less than an hour later, Google sent me an e-mail warning me that they prevented a potential login to my account--from someone based in the Netherlands! (Dutch!)
I remembered that odd folder--which I had left on the desktop because I didn't think anything of it--and tied the two together. There's no way someone could have known that I had logged into Google WITHIN THAT SAME HOUR unless my computer was compromised.
I quickly deleted the folder and ran a software update. I installed the Flashback tool as instructed and ran the specific commands in Terminal as well (neither the installation nor the commands found anything).
Here's my questions: Is there anything else I should do to figure out if my computer is still at risk? What about my other Mac that is on the same network--is that one at risk too? How in the world did this happen?

• HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8 Can't see base station. Hard Reset the Airport. Rebooted machine. How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8. Just installed Airport Express. I can't see any base stations. I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices, turned them back on. I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood. How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem? Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously, I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

You can see which apps are open and/or recently used by double-clicking the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the screen (not all apps that appear there are active) - you can then close apps on it by pressing and holding one of them for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar. If you have an app 'open' on-screen then it won't appear on the taskbar, you will need to go back to the homescreen first, and it should then show when you next open the taskbar.
If you haven't already got a copy then you can download the iPad manual from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
