I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • I want to install Mountain Lion on my 2008 iMac. My current OS is Snow Leopard 10.8.6. I've heard ML may be too much for this iMac. I would appreciate anyone's advice.

I want to install Mountain Lion on my 2008 iMac. My current OS is Snow Leopard 10.8.6 and there is 4GB RAM. I've heard ML may be too much for this iMac and may slow it down.  Has anyone had any problems with this upgrade?

See > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs OS X Mountain Lion requires a Mid 2007 iMac or newer, and your iMac can run Mountain Lion without any problem. 4 GB of memory are enough for Mountain Lion, but if you are going to use heavier applications, maybe you will need more RAM
Before upgrading, you must make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner, and check that your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

I'm still in the process of adjusting to life in the world of Macs and I was wondering just how hot is too hot for the CPU to be running at with the Unibody 13 inch Macbook?

The sensors are set to put the computer in thermal shutdown at 212F to prevent catastrophic damage.

Look in the Applications folder or in the Utilities folder (which is in the Applications folder) for an item named Java Preferences. If it is there, open it. You should then be asked permission for it to be downloaded and installed - okay that.

  • How big is too big for swf?

I have a swf file that has audio associated with about 15 slides. We were having some problems with it downloading and the people that host our LMS (Moodle) said that some of the problems may be related to our CP4 settings. I have the preloader set to 25% and the file is about 8.6 MB. They said to us:
Usually when hand-coding a SWF I require 100% of the SWF to be loaded before the SWF begins to play.
8.6mb is large for a SWF provided via progressive download. The optimum is no more than 5mb for users with a broadband connection. That may be part of the issue.
Is 8.6 MB really too big for a swf? What is the maximum size this should be? If it is too large what else can I do to shrink the audio as I'm sure that's a great deal of what is making the file too large?
    Thanks very much,
    Whitney

    Hey Whitlowe,
I had a very similar situation.  I received a 15 MB file from a "co-worker." The course was basically a converted PowerPoint into a Captivate course.  The course had 53 pages and had heavy audio.
When I initially tried to publish it to my LMS the course took about ten minutes to load.  I’m not sure if you use another authoring tool but I used another authoring tool called "Tool Book" a SumTotal product.  I had to divide the captivate course into 8 SWF files.  I then used Toolbook as a wrapper.  The Tool Book file was 8 pages.  Because Tool Book can read each page as a different SCO, the SWF files loaded one at a time.
For future courses, I am looking at getting a streaming server.  I can house my audio on the server.  The course would launch as a shell but would link to a streaming server for the audio/video.  Not only will this improve load time but decrease my space on the LMS.  I am looking into this option and not positive what the results will be, but I thought I would throw it out there.
That is the only solution I currently know of. I’m carious of any other solutions as well.
    Good luck.

  • My iPhoto Library is too big for my iMac

My iPhoto Library is now 272gb so is taking all the space on my iMac, so I need to move it off the Mac. I believe I can copy it to an external drive and then just "point" iPhoto at it by holding down the Alt key on launch?
But I am very nervous about losing any or all of my photos if I do this as I don't have a back-up (due to the library size). I don't even have space to run Time Machine. So I would like to check that I would be doing the right thing above please?
Also, I would appreciate any tips on organising photos in my own folders outside iPhoto, please.
I think it is best to import to my own folders from the camera because I tend to open photos in different applications, depending on what I want to do – Preview, Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and now possibly Aperture or Lightroom, because I need to upgrade to either Aperture or Lightroom.
If I import photos to iPhoto I end up exporting hi-res versions to edit in Photoshop etc before publishing them or sending them to anyone. Thus I am actually storing the photos twice, so it is small wonder I have run out of space.
I also have an iPhoto Library on my laptop, and many of these are duplicates of the other iPhoto Library. But I do not have enough space to merge them and get iPhoto Manager to remove the duplicates.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Sarah

    Thank you Larry,
I was wondering how professional photographers organised their work as they would quickly outgrow the space on a Mac hard drive the same as I have now I have been doing a lot more photography for publication.
Because of this I use different programmes for different requirements (either displaying, editing or adding to the photos' inbuilt file information),  but keeping the original photos in the iPhoto Library and Hi-Res JPG copies to work on in my own folder before submitting to a client just means I am using double the amount of space to store the photos. And I have set Photoshop as the edit programme, I know about that, and yes they pretty much all need tweaking in Photoshop. It improves them greatly, plus many need cropping.
I am aware of the importance of back-up and even though money is tight I will be getting a new LaCIe external drive to ensure I have enough space for Time Machine to back-up both iPhoto Libraries from both my Macs. But in the meantime I only have space to back them up manually on one LaCie external drive, formatted as Mac OS extended (Journaled) as you say. I hope I can eke out the couple of GBs space left on my Macs until I can get the new drive.
I am not happy about running the iPhoto Libraries from an external drive but due to the space problems I have no alternative.
Going forward I seem to have three alternatives. Either transfer them to Aperture or Lightroom or avoid duplication and storage problems by keeping the originals filed in my own folders for opening in one of these management programmes as required. I currently have folders for both hi-res and low-res edited versions of each photo in a project, as well as the originals in iPhoto. So the best filing system and the best way to reduce storage space is what I was wanting advice on.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE NEEDED ON REMOVING DUPLICATES
Additionally, many of the photos in my laptop iPhoto Library are duplicates of the ones in my main iMac iPhoto Library. Will iPhoto Library Manager work on libraries that are on an external drive? And do you know if it is possible to use iPhoto Library Manger to merge them on my external drive and remove duplicates please?
WILL IPHOTO LIBRARY MANAGER WORK ON LIBRARIES ON AN EXTERNAL DRIVE?
Final question: If I have two iPhoto Libraries on my external drive, is it safe to change their filenames to distinguish between them? Will iPhoto recognise libraries where the names have changed?
    Many thanks,
    Sarah

  • How do I create playlist for opera so arias are in performance order?

How do I create a new playlist for a complete operate so the arias are in performance order?

.............I have created a new folder; let's call
    it 'music of today'.
I'll now create a playlist within 'music of today',
I'll call that 'Jem' - all music by Jem is now being
transfered from my library into the playlist folder
    called 'Jem'.
I now want to transfer 'Jem' onto my iPod. I'll
transfer my folder, with my playlist attached, to my
connected iPod. Its now finished transfering. I have
now viewed my iPod in this order:
music> Album > ...........Oh? No title only the
listed music from my playlist. I was expecting my
    album title: Jem !!??
I wipe the iPod clear and instead of transfering the
folder I simply just transfer my playlist....but the
    same thing is happening.
How do I get my playlist onto my iPod so that it is
well organised and the album show the name of the
album rather than just the playlist.
I am really, truly stuck since I believe I have tried
various methods but my iPod doesn't want to show the
album name - what am I doing wrong. I have checked
out the apple site and the manual but it really
doesn't go into too much depth where this is
    concerned. :o)
    Thanks.
    Are you using iTunes??
To create a PLAYLIST, you do not need to create a FOLDER first. If you want to create a plylist called 'Jem' you just need to click the add playlist button within iTunes and name it Jem.
But maybe I'm just misunderstanding you and that's exactly what you are doing.
Within iTunes you can just make a playlist called Jem and put all your music by Jem in there. Help me to understand you...

  • 127 degrees F.. too hot for new iMac ?

iStat Pro says my new iMac HD temp is 127 degrees F. Is this too hot? The top left side of the case is almost too hot to rest my hand on. The case gets progressively cooler as I run my hand down the side.

127 degrees F is not too hot at all, mine regularly gets there and comes back down. You are resting your hand on the exhaust vent so of course it's going to be hot. I have seen my machine get as hot as the high 130's with no adverse affect. It seem like the temperatures are influenced by how warm the room is and if you are doing something that is graphics intensive. Also having vents that are blocked or living in a dusty environment can influence temps. My advice would be keep your iMac well ventilated (the intake is at the bottom of the machine) and once in a while when the machine is turned off vacuum both intake and exhaust vent to pull any dust that my have accumulated.

  • How hot is too hot for CPU's?

Melting through the bottom of the case like a runaway nuclear reactor is obviously bad...
BUT!  What temperature ranges should be be looking at for standard air cooling with a quality heatsink and fan?  I am running the intel provided retail heatsink and fan atm as the much more expensive unit I bought (the SP-94) wouldnt fit in my case at all.
So!  Currently at idle my CPU temp is 36c, but it is also a little cold in my house.  I have seen temps as high as 55c under load.  Anything I should be concerned about as I am overclocking a bit?  I am running 220x16 so running my 3.2 at 3.52ghz.
    Thanks!

Increasing the FSB provides for better system throughput, but just increasing the multiplier of the cpu does not, therefore, you might want to try decreasing the multiplier when you increase FSB.
The formula is pretty easy. Take the max stable CPU Mhz setting you have, 3600(=225x16), and then divide 3600 by the new FSB value you want to try. The result will be what you should set the CPU multiplier to. Doing this repeatedly will eventually give you the max stable FSB value you can run @ your stock voltages, and then you can try to tweak up your multiplier again. You might have to up both memory and CPU voltages to get past the 3600Mhz total, but only do this one step at a time. You're looking for the MINIMUM voltage increase to achieve stability.
HOWEVER, I don't recommend radical OC'ing to anyone who has only stock cooling, or who has a big heatsink on the CPU only. The whole system needs to be cooled as evenly as possible: CPU, RAM, chipset, motherboard, video card, and should be done BEFORE OC'ing. Otherwise, unless you have deep pockets, you might go broke buying a whole buttload of replacement parts.

  • How hot is too hot for macbook batteries?

Does anyone know how to keep a macbook battery cool? I have a macbook with dual processor that is about 9 months old. Two weeks ago, the hard drive failed and was replaced at an Apple store. I now notice that the battery gets very hot after really short use times-like just checking Mail. I'm wondering if the battery can get hot enough to fry my hard drive, and if so, what to do to prevent this happening again as I've already lost enough data (I'm a newbie and still have not figured out how to back up to my new and very large external hard drive).
    Thanks.
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    Macbook 1.1   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi wanster,
If your macbook still under warranty like you said (9 months), just bring back to apple, for battery shouldn't generate heat. Are you sure the heat was from battery insteadof the macbook processor?
Try to run battery updater 1.2 first and see if that will fixed it.
If the battery become hot, something internal might got short, and I suggest to take it off to prevent more damage to battery, macbook and yourself.
    Good Luck.

  • How hot is too hot for an eMac

    Hello
Today was very hot. It is now just after 6.00 pm and it is still 37 degrees celsius. Does an eMac (ATI Graphics) have a variable fan speed, it seems to be really blowing hard, or maybe it is just the sweat trickling down my face that is imagining it.
I know my iBook's fan revs up to a higher speed when it gets too hot.
What is the maximum recommended operating tempreture for my eMac.
I can't find it in the manual.
    Thank you
    regards roam

Hi, roam. You may just need to accept that your eMac's life is likely to be shorter than some others because of the adverse conditions it has to endure. If you do opt to buy a fan to help cool it, be sure to position the fan to blow air into the eMac's air intake vents, wherever they are, and NOT to blow air at the eMac's outlet vents, wherever those are.
I don't know whether it's dusty in your part of Oz, but you should be aware that dust inside the case dramatically impairs cooling, and that moving more air through the case will probably increase the rate of dust accumulation in there. I'm not familiar with eMac take-apart procedures, but if there's a way you can open things up periodically to blow the dust out, that would be a good idea.
