How cold is too cold?

I live in Illinois and it is getting pretty cold out. If I go somewhere with my new macbook and leave it in my car, will it hurt it? Lately, it's been snowing so it can easily get below freezing. Any precautions to take?

I tend to discourage people to leave their laptops in the car because:
1. Theft
2. Temperature extremity
Well yeah. However - I've buried my computer in the trunk when camping, and overnight temps were often in the high 30s F. Condensation is probably the biggest risk of taking it from cold to warm temps too quickly, as well as putting stress on the motor bearings of hard drives and fans.
However - these things are shipped from the Chinese assembler in unheated cargo planes. They arrive at the store shipped on trucks or trains that encounter all sorts of temperature extremes. I think in theory they can take it.

  • How cold is too cold for a camera/lens

    I've heard that when you use your camera in cold weather that when you bring it inside you should leave it in a sealed bag until it's at room temperature.  I have no problem doing that.  But how cold can my T5 tolerate as I'm walking outside taking photos?

    You could probably find it on the Canon Web site. I think it's part of the published specs.
    The sealed bag bit is an attempt to prevent condensation. Some claim it works, and others claim it doesn't.

  • How Much is Too Much?

    Hi everyone,
    I have recently been using my macpro more and more for high-def video work. I usually leave it on 24 hours a day as at night I set up a batch of files in compressor to run over night. Essentially, all my CPUs are maxed almost all the time. I am wondering if this could become a problem? I have read a little about average loads but don't fully understand what they mean. Mine are: 8.60, 7.58 and 7.42 and I am getting pretty high temps on my CPUs, power supplies and hard drives (about 44C, 54C and 39C average respectively). Am I pushing this thing too hard? How much is too much? Please see my system specs below.
    Thanks a lot!
    ~ Philip

    Don't let the drives get to 70C! they can take 50C safely. Memory and graphics are more of a concern. The cpu will protect itself.
    smcFanControl can insure that your fans stay above the default minimums, which is worth taking a look at (freeware).
    Fluctuation in temps between extremes can stress a hard drive and memory.

  • How much is too many?

    Have an iPad 16gb.
    Curious - At what point and how many Apps does it take for the device to be affected and slow down?

    Ask 300 people, get 300 answers .....
    I rarely have more than 4 or 5 apps in my recents tray at any one time. But you can bet your bottom dollar that my browser - and it doesn't matter which of the five that I have I am using at the time - will crash on me every day - day after day - 3 or 4 times a day. I seem to have particularly bad luck with the iPad internet experience. When I use the Mercury browser - and it has done this since day one - I constantly get the low memory warning - even if I have closed all apps and have just restarted the iPad.
    That's kind of a bummer for me because my iPad has become more of an mobile internet toy and email reader than a work machine. That's OK - I had no problem spending the money and taking the chance to see what I would get out of it because I wasn't quite sure what I would be using it for but I knew I really wanted one.
    There really is a point to this and it is that no one has any way of knowing for certain how many is too many. As I have told you - I can run one solitary app and crash with great frequency. It's just something that only you can find out on your own as you continue to use the device.

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

    How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
    I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

    You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • How Hot is Too Hot 20" iMac (Mid 07)

    I have a new 20" iMac 2.4 GHz that came with the Apple installed 1 GB of RAM. I realize it is normal for the top edge to be warm. I wanted to know how warm so I installed the Temperature Monitor v4.2 and it currently reads 123.8 F. Is this normal or hot? How hot is too hot and what will happen if I install another memory module?
    Is there a better utility or something from Apple to track temperature?

    Ps: How do I add an icon showing one of the new iMac?

    +How hot is too hot and what will happen if I install another memory module?+
    185 F is too hot, but unless you've got your iMac sitting in direct sunlight or are operating it at the extreme upper end of the ambient temperature operating range at 95 F, it would be highly unlikely to reach that temperature since the fans do an excellent job of cooling.
    The whole point of Apple's switching to Intel processors was to provide the same power as the Power PC processors, but at much lower temperatures due to consumers not using air conditioning to such a wide extent as do businesses.
    Installing another memory module will not make much impact on most internal temperatures, except it will probably tend to lower the hard drive temperature since with more memory there won't be as much swapping of data back and forth between memory and hard drive.
    Computers have always worked faster in a cooler environment rather than in a hotter environment, so if your environment is hot and you want to give your Mac some help, turn on the air.
    As to the topic, it is not marked as solved, but is marked as answered.

  • Hdx 18t GPU: How hot is too hot?

    Hello,
    I have a HDX 18t i bought off a friend.  I noticed that while playing games (WoW, starcraft 2), the GPU gets pretty hot... i have maxed out at 79 degrees C which is crazy hot.  I have heard however, that laptop GPUs tend to run hotter, wanted to get an idea of what is considered really hot.  I called HP support, and they said they can run up to 90 degrees C without issue, so this is ok.  Can a gpu run this hot and still be ok? My desktop GPU rarely runs above 60 degrees C.
    Note that the laptop doesnt restart while playing (yet) but i rarely play continously for an hour.  Also, I have one of those zalaman NC2000 laptop coolers, but doesnt really seem to help the hot GPU issue.

  • Am I being a spaz? How hot is too hot?

    I was doing some google searches, and I've just come up with statistics, not whether or not the temperatures were too hot, or if it was normal.
    From what I've read, the iMac can idle safely at ~50C, [122F], and when gaming, it can go into the upper 80C's [176F].
    I've been using smcFanControl with like, 5 different settings, and my normal response would be, turn up the fans if it gets
    above 110F [43C]  and if it gets to 120F [49C] or above, I switch the fans to max until it lowers to around 100F [37C].
    It may just be me, but am I being overly cautious about temperatures? I'd rather the fans need to be replaced than the hardware,
    and also, I've read that it will definitely just shut itself off if it gets "too hot", but about how hot is 'too hot', and will this work
    if I'm booted in Windows?
    Just for reference, the ambient air should be somewhere in between 70-80F [20-27C].
    Mid 2010 iMac, 21.5"
    3.2GHz Intel i3
    4GB RAM
    ATI Radeon 5670 [512MB]

    Hmm. Alright, I may end up uninstalling it and resetting the SMC/PRAM later, and just use it normally. I usually don't mind the fans being a bit noisier, if it'll keep the system cool, since I have an external tower speaker I use, which I love when gaming...

  • How to fix: Too many Primary Partitions ? G770

    Hello,
    I am trying to install PuppyLinuxSlacko.5.4 from a LiveUsb to a unallocated-Partition in my Lenovo-G770 Laptop, Win7 .

    I've been told that to try and fix it in Linux is too risky .
    I set up the unallocated 20gb partition.
    Can I just merge it into the 29gb Extended Partition ?
    If I did merge, How would I access it ? Which Partition is it an extension of ?
    I am on thin ice here, and would rather fix the prob in Window7 , because I am brand new to Linux .
    Here is the PartitionsDetail using AomeiPartitionAssistant -note the differences:
    http://www.vmars316.com/ShowMe/AoemiPartitionWindows.png
    Is there a way to tell what's in the partitions , especially the two 29gb partitions and the 14gb partition ?
    Worst case: Is there a way to reset my 'Lenovo G770' computer back to factory settings under win7 ?
    I think I'll add this Post to the Win7 Forum, since I hope to fix it via Win7 .

    Ryclark is, alas, spot on.
    In the bad old days I used to use CD to playback sound effects in the theatre and many of these were less than 4 seconds duration.  I used to have to edit in a few seconds silence at the end of all the short effects to keep the CD format happy.

  • How full is too full?

    I have read several accounts of the troubles people have when filling their Xserve RAID too full.
    How full is too full? 85%? 90%? 95%?
    Thanks,
    Ed

    I don't think there is a hard limit due to the differences in file types - it's likely to be different depending on whether you have thousands of multi-gigabyte files or millions of 4K files.
    As a general rule I'd use 90% as the limit to work to, but don't be surprised if performance degrades before then.

  • How Hot Is Too Hot For Late 2008 Macbook Unibody?

    I'm still in the process of adjusting to life in the world of Macs and I was wondering just how hot is too hot for the CPU to be running at with the Unibody 13 inch Macbook?

    The sensors are set to put the computer in thermal shutdown at 212F to prevent catastrophic damage.
