How come a force quit application would NOT quit?

Hi,
I have now had two instances when an application which I needed to force quit, would not quit.
Both instances were with _*Elgato EyeTV version 2.5(3011)*_. OK the application would look as if it quits and disappear form the screen, but when checking in the DOCK the little triangle is there there. There was an error message "-600".
I tried to repeat force quit to no avail. Douple clicking to restart the programme fully would not work either. Restarting would however resolve the problem.
I suppose I should have tried to kill the application in TERMINAL.
Any other explanations?
Has anybody else come across resilient applications like that?
Regards

Thanks,
I agree - force quit works better when first activating the Finder. If that gives you the rolling ball, trying the Activity Monitor is a good option.
But the two events I am referring to are clearly different: ok, I used the Blue Apple Force Quit option, but the application would only sort of 'half quit'. There would be an error message: - 600. Also the Activity triangle in the dock would still be there. It would again be listed as an active application in the Blue Apple 'Force Quit' window. Force quitting in this window, would again remove it from that list, but the triangle would remain unchanged.
Also starting the application again would not work. - OK, I did not try killing it in TERMINAL then,
as I was about to switch off anyway. I used the Blue Apple option for that. No problems with it.
Restarting later was without problems either.
It just looks as if this particular application Elgato EyeTV +*would get stuck 'half way' after force quitting*+... Odd!
Have you observed anything like that with any application?
Regards

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

Quite seriously, though, if you wish to use MS Office to it's full potential and if you depend on it on a regular basis, then upgrading to Office 2011 is the only reccommended way to go. You can use the free Apps mentioned, learn to use iWorks (which I love, but others don't) or make your system a shambles and lose your easy to use interface by the other method. Deduct the cost of Parallels from MS Office and it becomes pretty cheap, if that is the only PPC program you wish to use, which is the norm as PPC is long gone from development.
MS Office 2011 is not expensive if it is one of your major work tools. Think of those who had to update their Adobe software!
    Anyhow Cheers

The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

Updated my iPhone 3gs yesterday to ios 6 (first time ever).  Backed up my content to icloud, but it wouldn't quit.  Remained on that screen for HOURS.  Finally disconnected phone from computer.  Still would not go away--just the "circle of death."  Restarted phone and lost EVERYTHING (pics, contacts and apps).  Can I get them back?  Are they somewhere out in cyberspace or lost for good?

You're not alone. I am having similar problems with my Ipod 5th gen 30gb.
When I connect it to my laptop (Vista - basic) it is not recognised by itunes. Itunes simply locks up.
So far I have tried the following to no avail:
Checked my pc's device manager - it recognises the device and says it is functioning properly.
Checked the drivers to make sure they are upt to date.
Uninstalled & reinstalled a previous version of itunes (as it worked fine before the latest release).
    Reinstalled the latest itunes.
    Reset the ipod.
Put the ipod into disk mode and reconnected to itunes.
Have tried to use the windows tool to scan and fix any bad sectors but it fails to complete a scan without locking that up as well.
Placed into disk mode when fully charged and then allowed the battery to drain completely. Then reconnected ipod (in disk mode)and it still is not recognised and locks up itunes.
At this point I dont really want to part with another $300 odd dollars for a new one.

Communication through files tends to fail if the
program exits abnormally and leaves the file in a
"running" state. If you store the pid the only way it fails is if the
program exits abnormally and then another process
starts up using the same pid as is stored in the file
before you restart your application. Basically it is
not likely to happen and if it does you just drop the
pid file. The point is that Java programs can't, generally, handle signals. That's what the commons Daemon stuff provides.
The standard way of stopping a unix background task is to use the stored pid to throw a "kill" at the process, whiich the process intercepts and does what you asked, e.g. close down tidily or reread it's configuration.
Java knows nothing about process ids.

  • Applications will not quit

Hello Mac gurus- got a question for you:
I am running a 17" iMac G5 1.8 Ghz. Here's my problem: I recently upgraded to leopard. My machine started having lots of very bizarre problems, and it annoyed me to the point of wanting re-installing tiger. SO, I opted to do an "erase and install" (did NOT do an archive and install) using the discs that came with this machine- OS10.3.9 if I recall correctly. I then used my Tiger drop-in DVD and upgraded to 10.4, did all the apple updates, and I am currently running 10.4.11. Now, ever since I did this, certain applications will stop responding when I try to quit them. Specifically iChat, iCal, and address book- all other apps seem to be OK from Photoshop to iTunes, to iPhoto- all is well. First, I tried restarting my machine several times- no help. I then repaired disk permission via disk utility in the utilities folder- no change. I then booted from the install disks and repaired both the disk and permissions with no change. I then tried resetting the PMU- no change. The last thing I did was reset the PRAM, again, no change. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/suggestions on how to get this very annoying problem to go away? I've never had a single problem with this machine, until I did the upgrade to leopard, then reverted back to Tiger. Please help! Thanks in advance!!!
update: I cross posted in the iMac forum, and have tried several other suggestions:
I ran a program called Preferential Treatment, which checks for corrupt Pref. files, and that came back with no problems found. I also deleted all prefs of the apps I'm having problems with- no luck. Next, I used spotlight, and found ONE folder that remained from the Leopard install- deleted that folder, and no change. I CAN force quit the non-responding application. Does anyone here in Tiger forum have any experience fixing this annoying problem? Thanks in advance!

Interesting issue. What would I do? Start all over , I know a pain but...
I'd zap pram before doing install....once install disk is booted then use its Disk Utility to partition the drive...quit disk utility then use options to do an erase and install to whatever OS you booted.
Before I did all that please search apple/support and use the search feature for imac and Tiger docs. You may need some firmware upgrade or software updater. That's for sure for imacs and Leopard anyway. good luck

  • Mail Application Does Not Quit Properly

I have a brand new iMac 20" and a new .Mac account. My son has an older PowerBook G4 and a separate .Mac account of his own. We both experience the same problem on our Macs...
Sometimes when we use Mail to check our .Mac e-mail after we are done using the program we go to quit the program. Sometimes, not all the time, the program window closes (it disappears from the screen) but the little triangle still stays under the Mail icon and the word Mail stays in bold in the top left-hand corner indicating that the program is still open. It will stay that way for hours if we let it.
The only way we know to get rid of this is to force quit Mail but we are assuming that is the wrong way and/or does damage. My son's PowerBook is somewhat older, but has barely any e-mails in his account. My iMac is brand new (as is my .Mac account) and has very few e-mails as well.
What seems to be causing this and how can we fix it? I am unable to shut down my Mac until I force quit Mail... otherwise when I go to shutdown nothing happens.
    Thank you.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
