How come I always get the same results when I repair permissions?

When I repair permissions I get the following messages, even if I do it again immediately afterwards:
+Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .+
+Repaired "usr/share/derby".+
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.+

The message about the ARDAgent is the result of an Apple update to Apple Remote Desktop from awhile ago. If you ran the update, you will get the notice. The "derby" message says that instead of a folder in the /usr/share directory there is now a symbolic link. Since derby is a java gizmo for the Apache web server, and there is a new Java update from Apple (which I haven't run yet, as it requires a restart), it is quite possible that the update makes that change. As Barney noted, Apple has not been good at making changes in the permissions database when they send out updates. The result is that we begin to see these little notes. Initially the database was in complete accord with what the installation had, and there were no warnings at all in Snow Leopard. After the ARD update the SUID warning began, and it is likely the Java update just added another one.
However, the tendency of people to just automatically ignore all warnings all the time, a legacy of the horrible performance of Apple in updating the database in Leopard (where one would get dozens of these things), is I think unfortunate. There can be real errors, some of which could indicate something bad, such as a compromised computer. One really needs to stop and think about which files are showing a warning, and what the warning means, and whether it is the case that all Snow Leopard installations that are fully updated are showing the particular warnings in question.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

  • WRT54GS: without Windows, force a given MAC address to always get the same IP address via DHCP?

I have just now set up my WRT54GS to manage my home wireless network, and it works great. I just have one question that I haven't been able to find an answer for (forgive me if I have overlooked an obvious source of information).
I have set up the WRT54GS to be a DHCP server, and it assigns addresses in an ad hoc manner to all the devices that connect to it. In general, this is what I want, but in one case, I want a certain host to always get the same IP address, for example, 192.168.1.10.
You should know that I have no Windows machines on my network. Everything is either running Linux, MacOSX, or Symbian (on a Nokia N95 handheld). Therefore, I can't set up a static IP for my device using the software supplied on the CD that comes with my router, as that software only runs under Windows.
Using a different manufacturer's router, I am able to accomplish this by telling the DHCP software on that router to always assign 192.168.1.10 to the host who connects with a certain MAC address. I can then use this mechanism to force my specific host to always get this desired IP address. However, I haven't been able to find any way to do that with the WRT54GS without the software on the Windows-based CD. Is it possible at all? If I can indeed do this without that Windows software, could someone point me to some docs which explain how to accomplish this?
... or is there perhaps a different way to cause this to happen, perhaps by means of some sort of DHCP client ID?
Thank you very much in advance for any pointers you can give me.

Take a hippopotamus to lunch today.

Forget about the CD. There is nothing on the CD which you don't configure better through the router web interface at http://192.168.1.1/ You don't need the CD. Never. I have never used the CD to configure any of my routers. The program on the CD is just a software which helps you with the initial configuration of the router. It is just a software which pretty much contacts the web interface in the background and sends some settings changes there. You can do everything yourself directly. Then you know what you change.
You have to configure the static IP address on the computer and on the computer only, e.g. on your Mac use Static IP instead of DHCP in the network preferences. Enter the IP address you want to use for the computer, the subnet mask, gateway address and DNS server(s). That's it. The router is not involved in any of this.
You just have to make sure that you use an IP address inside the LAN of the router. By default, Linksys routers use the IP address 192.168.1.1 on the LAN side for the the router. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. The IP address together with the subnet mask says that all IP addresses 192.168.1.0-255 are considered part of the LAN. Everything else is outside and needs to be routed to the router and from there into the internet. (If you want to know how the subnet mask works exactly read the wikipedia article on it or search for "subnet calculator" or similar in the internet)
Thus, if you connect a computer to your LAN and set a static IP address on the computer it should be inside this IP address subnet/range in order to have internet and LAN access on the computer. It does not matter which address you use as long as it is inside the IP subnet. The DHCP server on the router automatically assign a correct IP address inside the IP subnet and also automatically assigns the correct gateway address (its own address = the address to which everything should be sent which does not belong into the LAN, i.e. the internet traffic) and the DNS server. With static IP you have to assign those values yourself.
But again, there is no Windows computer or CD involved to do that nor is there any configuration on the router required to set the static IP address on the Mac. The IP address you set must simply match your LAN IP which is basically defined through the settings on the router as you want to have internet and thus need access to the router and its address 192.168.1.1.
Some routers allow you define fixed IP addresses for specific devices in the DHCP server of the router. With that function you can set a fixed IP address on the router. The computer can remain on DHCP. It will always get the IP address you have configured in the list on the router through the DHCP server. However, your Linksys router does not have this option. If any device inside your LAN is supposed to receive the same IP address at any time you have to configure that on the device only.
If you have not changed the default LAN IP address, subnet mask and DHCP server settings on the router, the router has 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the DHCP server uses 192.168.1.100-149 for dynamic assignments. To avoid potential address conflicts you should not use any static IP addresses inside the DHCP server address pool. This leaves you with IP addresses 192.168.1.2-99 and 150-254 as static IP addresses inside your LAN. You can pick any address you like as long as any device with a static IP address has a unique IP address inside your LAN.
Assign the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on the computer and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1. The DNS servers are a little bit more complicated. Generally it is better and faster if you use the DNS servers of your ISP. You can, however, also use the IP address of the router 192.168.1.1 as DNS server. The router will then operate as DNS proxy, i.e. it contacts the DNS servers of your ISP for any request from your computer.
If you want to use the DNS servers of your ISP, click on the Status tab in the router web interface. It shows you the current settings of the router on the internet port. It should show you multiple entries for DNS servers. Choose those DNS server IP addresses in the computer.
If you don't want to go through the hassle with the direct access to the DNS servers of your ISP, simple use 192.168.1.1 as only DNS server on the computer.
There are all settings you have to make on your Mac or other computers to assign a static IP address. As long as the IP address is inside 192.168.1.* it belongs to the LAN and has internet access through the router (as long as the default gateway address is 192.168.1.1 of course).
Firmware is loaded either through the web interface of the router, usually somewhere on the Administration tab or with tftp. Both ways work fine on any Mac or Linux box.

    Hi, Kenny.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple things that I would recommend trying.  Try closing all open applications and power cycle the device.  Next, go through the section labeled Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the second article below.  If the issue persists, try completely signing out of the iTunes Store on the iOS device and sign back in.  Be sure to test downloading an application after each step.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Edge has very clear restrictions, one being that you must have 6 months of clean payment history which you don't. Either wait until April 14, or good luck at Sprint.
I am unsure how it can be determined the payment mix up was the fault of CS, but regardless, the mix up was done. There can be any number of reasons why a payment could be missed without any fault on your part, however you are still the responsible party for the account and must live with the repercussions.

I have an older Macbook with OS/X. Tried to download iTunes 10 a few times now, but when installing I always get the same error message: Run Preinstall Script for Apple Mobile Device Support. What can I do to finalise the installation?

Thanks. Short of the sort of "generic" suggestions of restaring your system, if you haven't, and repairing disk permissions and verifying the disk, I don't have any advice right now. I'll do some research and see if I can come across anything. Meanwhile, someone else may have an idea.

When I try to update Firefox it repeatedly says Firefox must be closed to proceed with install even tho Firefox is closed. I get the same message when I try to uninstall the existing version of Firefox. How do I close Firefox??? The same thing happens when I try to update other programs. When a program is off what else do I have to do to turn it off??

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have other problems with updating to update then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

Once I connect my iPhone to the compjuter to sync., the computer crashes, and continues to reboot as long as the charge cable is connect between the iPhone and the computer, once I disconnect it, then the computer and iTunes will function normally.
I had uninstalled and reinstalled the iTunes 3 different times, still I am getting the same results, I therefore had to uninstall the iTune from my computer to be able to do my work, and charge the iPhone at the same time.  Please note that few weeks ago, everything was working fine.

If you have photos in the Camera Roll on your iPhone and have preferences set to open an image azure application on your pc when a camera is connected, your pc will do just that. That's how one transfers photos taken with the phone to a PC.
You can do two things to avoid this.
    1. Just quit the image capture application and open iTunes. You do have iTunes 10.7 or higher installed on your pc, right?
    2. You can change the preferences on your pc to do nothing when a camera is connected. And you can set the preference in iTunes to open iTunes when your iPhone is connected.
