How come I can only send email when I am near my wi-fi at home? Doesn't the IPhone 4 have the ability to send email without being near wi-fi?

If your iPhone service is through ATT try the following:
1. go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2. tap the line for your WOW mail account.
3. scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server section and tap the line for SMTP
4. under Other SMTP Servers you should have an entry for "AT&T SMTP Server", if the server is off, tap the line for that server, tap "OFF" to turn the server on
5. tap Done
6. tap the line for the primary server
7. tap "ON" to turn the server off
8. tap Done
9. tap the name of your email account in the upper left corner
10. tap Done
What we are trying to accomplish is to set the primary SMTP server for this account off and turning on the ATT SMTP server.
If this doesn't work or you have Verizon, we'll try something else.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

Why? Because something is wrong.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

It sounds like there is a network/iPhone configuration error. I would head to a carrier store and verify that the sim and account are configured properly

Hi, have read just about every query and reply regarding messages stuck in outbox, and have tried just about every suggestion and tip going, but my mail still sits there stubbornly refusing to go.
I tried rebooting; I tried refreshing; I tried going into settings and verifying the email account; I tried re-entering the default account; I tried closing the app and restarting it; I tried double pressing the home button; you name it I tried it, but nothing works. Those emails are just sitting there refusing to budge. I am at my wits end!
Please can somebody give me some more things to try?! Thank you.

Hi, does anyone know why I cant send email over 3g but can over wi-fi. My provider is ntlworld. As soon as I get home and connect to wi-fi the mail sends no problem

We use ntlworld as our home broadband provider and main email address. In my experience ntl doesn't usually allow sending of email except on its own network which is why yours works at home. My iPhone is set up to send my ntl email using my second email account's smtp setting (in my case is is a mac.com account and I haven't found any network this doesn't work on to send email).
So my advice is to get yourself another email account with a different provider like yahoo or google, then use the new provider smtp address to send your ntl email on your iPhone.

Update - I now have it working.
am not really sure what exactly fixed it.
I changed a lot of things but my setup now has the following which I think fixed.
outgoing server - p06-smtp.mail.me.com
override default port checked - port now 587
on more options button changed it to "use incoming server info".
