How come when i connect my nano to my computer it says in itunes "an ipod has been detected but could not be itentified properly"?

whenever i connect my ipod nano to my computer, itunes gives me a pop-up that says, "an ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect the ipod, then try again." when i do that, i get the same pop-up. beneath the pop-up stated before it also says "If the problem persists, uninstall Itunes, then install Itunes again." but after doing that, it still will not read my ipod and scan it in.

Does the Apple ID on the iPod match the Apple ID on iTunes?
