It is a Pentium 4 board. How can the reviews be anything than mediocre, at best.
I wrote Socket A, but maybe in 2004 you could get an AMD64 system. They ran in eights around the Pentium 4, at a lower power consumption and heat dissipation.    Now, I think you could get one at a very good price. This is a mere 180$, even in expensive Sweden: http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=325623
Thanks
I am agree with you, but I still want to get a P4 board to replace my damaged one ,because it 's a easy and cheap way to solve my problem.

  • PT880 Neo-LSR/WD740GD SATA Incompatibility?

I have a new PT880 Neo-LSR and a new WD740GD Raptor hard drive, and the motherboard will not properly recogize the hard drive when it is connected to the SATA connector.  I've had no problem getting into the bios, or booting from a CD or floppy.  In fact, I successfully flashed it from a floppy with the latest bios to see if that would resolve the HD recognition problem, but no luck.  When I try to install Windows XP, the installation fails every time because no hard drive is detected.
I ran a Western Digital hard drive test from a floppy, and it incorrectly recognized the WD740GD as a WD1200BB.  I went ahead and tried to run the test, but the test failed due to some undefined problem with the hard drive.
The remainder of the new system components include a Pentium 2.4A Prescott, 2 256 meg sticks of Kingmax PC-3500 SuperRAM, Antec TRUE430 PS and ATI Radeon 9700 video card.
I've assembled about a dozen computers from scratch, and have never been stumped like this!  I can't figure out if it's a motherboard problem, a hard drive problem, a compatibility problem or a problem of me missing a setting somewhere.

    Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions!
    1) I am not overclocking.  I'm trying to get the computer to run for the first time with all default settings.
    2) I have hit F6 at the start of Windows XP install, and installed the drivers from the  included diskette (G72-VASA020 VOA SATA RAID driver for VT6420/VT8237).  From the diskette, I've tried to install the SATA RAID driver for Windows XP and the PATA IDE driver individually and together.  No matter which one I use, or if I use both, same problem:  Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed.  I've even installed the two drivers in different order.  I've tried every option.  Hard drive still not recognized.
    3) There are only 2 SATA connectors on the mainboard -- SATA1 and SATA2.  I've tried both connectors, and neither works.  I even bought a new SATA cable in case the one I received with the MB was bad.  Same problem with new cable -- Windows XP installation does not recognize that a hard drive is installed.  The AMI bios does not offer SATA Enhanced or Native options nor SATA+PATA combination.  It offers "Onboard PATA-IDE," which must be enabled for the CD drive to be recognized; "Internal SATA Controller," which must be enabled for the HD connected to 1 of the 2 SATA connectors to be recognized; and, under "Internal SATA Controller," "Boot ROM Function," which seems to make no difference whether it's enabled or disabled.
I've probably tried to install Windows XP now about 25 times with various combinations of bios options and drivers.  A couple of times I've actually gotten to the point where I got to agree with the Microsoft agreement.  But the window that it took me to said that I could not install Windows XP on the hard drive that had been identified.  There was no option given to format the HD.  As I mentioned previously, it still mistakenly thinks that the hard drive is a WD1200BB instead of the correct WD740GD Raptor.  But it won't let me do anything with the HD.
Does anyone have any experience starting up the PT880 Neo-LSR with any SATA hard drive attached?  The reason I ask is because I want to know if it correctly identified your hard drive on the initial bootup before you even attempted to install an operating system.  As I've said, mine incorrectly identifies the hard drive some of the time upon bootup, and some of the time it does not identify any hard drive at all.  As far as I know, a hard drive connected to a SATA connector should be properly recognized on bootup.

  • PT880 Neo-LSR bootup hell

I'm having a hell of a time troubleshooting the problem with my mobo booting...
Had some Centon RAM that went bad awhile back and had an RMA replacement of that RAM. Prior to shipping it back to them, the system was *very* unstable, but usable. The replacement RAM worked for about a day, and then the system failed again. Now, it won't boot into any system software (even memory tests like memtest86 freeze up) -- Windows or Linux (Knoppix, specifically).
I've also tried a stick of Mushkin RAM with the same results.
D-Bracket readouts show failures at different times: Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting, Testing VGA BIOS, Processor Initialization, and Assign Resources to all ISA.
    System is:
    PT880 Neo-LSR mobo
Celeron 2.4 GHz processor, stock heat-sink
    Mushkin 512 MB PC2700 or Centon 512 MB PC2100
Leadtek WinFast A360 Ultra TDH (GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, 128 MB) video card
Any ideas what I can try next, or should I fill out an RMA return form for the mobo?
    Suggestions?

  • PT880 Neo-LSR 7008 ver 1 dead after bios flash

I flashed my new (well it's been on a shelf for a while) PT880 Neo-LSR 7008 with a Win98 floppy and now it doesn't boot anymore.
I followed the instructions on the website ... make boot floppy, put bios on different disk.  when I ran the flash program, it
successfully erased the old bios then I got a error reading drive a:  error.  I assumed it was looking for command.com or some
other nonsense, but I hit r for retry several times before taking the bios disk out and putting the boot floppy in.  then I
hit r for retry again.  the flash program then continued, starting the flash process, finishing, and finally giving me a 'success' message
and sending me back to the DOS prompt.  So I assumed it worked.
Now when I try to boot the computer (which booted fine before the flash), I get nothing.  The D-bracket-2 never gets past
all four lights (= system power on - "the d-led will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly"), even though
I changed nothing other than flashing the bios.  The cpu fan is plugged in and turns so I don't think it's the thermal protection
    circuit.
I tried hitting ctrl-home to force a bios recover with a bios file named amibios.rom in the floppy but I don't see any drive
lights come on the floppy after several minutes.
I also tried booting after clearing the cmos with jumper and also physically taking the battery out.  This is not my first time
flashing a bios, but the first time I had a problem.   Anybody got any suggestions?      oh yeah, I used
the 1.9 bios 11-26-04 to flash.

okay, thanks.  the files check out fine on a different floppy drive (was written using the floppy on the dead computer).
the MSI tech support people also think it is a bad board (even though it worked fine prior to the bios upgrade).  wasn't sure I would get a reply from the ts people, site says you should get a confirm letter first, which i didn't.  luckily i still have at least a month based on manufacture date till the 1 yr warranty ends.

  • Still troubleshooting 0x0000007F errors on PT880 Neo-LSR

So frustrating...just cannot seem to end the 2-3 times a week blue-screen shutdown my computer insists on.  Posted something a few months back on this, and consensus seemed to be that my 380w Antec Power supply was too small for my system, so I upgraded it to the TruePower550, really hoping this would end the problem.  It did not.
Seemingly corresponding with the errors I'm getting (it seems), is a disk error in the event properties that says:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk4\D.  Sometimes it calls this "Harddisk3" or "Harddisk2" for some reason, but it's always D.  My D: drive is a 160GB IDE that is pretty new and it's hard to imagine it's really failing.  Maybe, but I doubt it.  I replaced the IDE cable to this drive to no avail.  I don't know if the fact that my C: drive is SATA is contributing to this, though.
The blue screen error actually reads:
    0x0000007F (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Microsoft says this is either bad RAM or a bad mobo.  Both are just a few months old.  I have a lot of pretty new (expensive) equipment going here.
It seems if I want to have my Geil memory tested, I have to pay $49 at the computer store near me.  Which seems outrageous.  I could almost buy a brand new PT880 Neo-LSR for that.  Which won't help if the mobo is not the problem, but still.  The BIOS I'm running is 1.7.
Obviously I'm going to have to keep spending money on new equipment troubleshooting this.  It never ends!!  The question is, where to spend it?  On the RAM test?  On a new slave drive I might not need?  Should I just buy a new mobo?
Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Well, I pulled the drive that was throwing the errors and sure enough, still getting the same errors/restarts saying the drive D (which is no longer in the machine at all) is at fault.  Ridiculous.
This has to be the board.  I'm convinced.
Time to buy (another) new motherboard.  This one must be like 4 months old or so.  Sheesh.

Can you remove the slave drive for now and see if that helps with stopping the errors, if not then perhaps RMA your Board as a mainboard fault will throw all kinds of errors at you.
I spent 7 months trouble shooting before i found out it was the board ... Iwould not wish that stress on anyone else. Any way good luck and let us know if you fix it.

  • [PT880-Neo LSR]Power supply problem

    Hello,
We've installed the new motherboard today, it model is PT880 Neo LSR. Well we've got everything plugged in, but when we try to turn on our computer it doesn't turn on.
There is a case switch, but when turn on, the fans work for like 1 second then it stop.
I've tried the Troubleshooting guide on the website, and studying the Manual, but I could not find a way to fix this.
Can anyone help us fix this power supply problem please?
    Thanks

But i just exchanged another mainboard, and still not work. the first time i test it, i only plug the 4-pin and 20-pin connector into the mainboard and it worked. i thought the problem was solved. so i put everything else in (cpu, hdd, cd-rom, dvd-rom...) then test it again. I only heard a sound psssst, and nothing run. I tested it many time and it still not work. Then I UNPLUG the 4-pin connector from the power supply to the mainboard, and test again, this time, only all the fan RUN except the the fan in the power supply DID NOT run. Is it because that the power supply got problem? I used another power supply 420w to test but nothing run either.
    MATSONIC motherboard MS9087C
    DDR 400
    Intel celeron 2gh 400 fsb
    Macron 350w power supply
The psssst sound----sounds like something shorted out. Pull everything out and put it back in with a different PSU.
Don't put a hard drive or floppy in-----just CPU, RAM mobo, vid card, fans, PSU-----see if it will post.

  • Pt880 neo-lsr

    cele 2.0 work with DDRAM PC-3200 400MHz 256MB or not in mb pt880 neo-lsr

Celeron based CPU originally doesn't support 400MHz DDR RAMs so I guess that even if it supoprts, it'll work the RAMs at DDR 266 or 333MHz only. 400MHz is not achievable unless you o/c your system.

  • Can a Pentium 4 "based" Celeron work on a PT880 NEO-LSR?

I'm asking cause I'm kinda strapped for cash and need my PC up and running soon till I can afford something better.
These new Celeron's by the way are made with the same P4 core right (just lower L2 cache). So there's no reason they shouldn't work in my board even though the NEO-LSR isn't rated for Celeron. right?

yea, this processor didn't work. I hate this MB. It's the first time that building a PC that this has ever happened to me.
The diagnosis indicated that Cpu was either damaged or not installed properly. I tried installing it six times, nothing. No message, nothing on the screen..nothing. I even took the heat sink off and turned on the PC and the CPU felt barely warm like it wasn't even plugged in.
I think i'm going to sell this board and call it a day.

  • PT880 Neo LSR beeping a lot

I took out my Sound Blaster Live card and now when my computer turns on it beeps continously and then I turn it off.  I turn it back on and then it has a beep code  Beep-Beep....Beep-beep-beep-beep-beep-beep-beep.  I dunno what that code is as of yet and I haven't really looked at the 4 lights on the back.  But it takes about 3 or 4 turn offs or resets to get it to finally come up.  Then it can stay on forever.  Its the 380w Antec SmartPower that came with the Antec Sonata case.  I have increased voltage to everything but I dunno what it is.  Can anyone help.  I have the 2.4A Prescott Core if that helps.

I watched the D-Bracket and it didn't tell me much.  Everytime it hung up on a light code and I restarted it, it would be a different code.  I dunno...Maybe I should have just left my Sound Blaster in as I had it running great and it started up fine.  Could it be that the onboard sound could be causing this?  Seems simple enough.  I had it disabled with the sound card in and had no errors what-so-ever.  The only reason I took it out was so that the Prescott could have a bit more room with the 380w psu.  The odd thing about the sound too is that the Left and Right channels are reversed.  So if I play a game and someone is shooting at me on the right, I hear it all on the left.  I know that isn't default.  Or is it? lol
Back to the power issue, I read somewhere that a typical PCI card uses about 30w of power.  The mobo uses about 50-80w (not completely sure) and the CPU about 90-120w (not sure either).  But does anyone know since I took out the card and used the onboard sound, would it make that much of a difference in "spare power"?  I mean since the mobo has to take more power to use another one of the chips on it I think it'd prolly pull in maybe 5-15 more watts.  I dunno about electronics in terms of that but I think it might be fair to say that.  Can anyone chime in on this.  I basically tried to fix what wasn't broken and I have been frustrated like hell.

  • PT880 Neo LSR----Dang----have you seen the bios options in this baby!

Bought this board from NewEgg for $59!!  Rumored to be Via's "Canterwood Killer"----and man---for $59---what a steal!
Got the rig together but haven't updated bios yet or loaded Windows.  But these things struck me immediately!!
BTW----it posted perfectly the very first time...
    1. AGP/PCI lock for the first time in any Via Bios!!!!!
    2. Extensive DRAM settings---way more than most boards
    3. Vcore voltages were excellent and ran very high
    4. VDIMM voltages went from normal to INSANE!!
    5. Excellent AGP votage adjustments.
    6. Northbridge voltage adjustments!
    7. Southbridge votage adjustments!
Plus it has some "Turbo" and "High Performance" settings I don't even know what they do.  Not to even mention the "Core Cell" Dynamic Overclocking stuff.
There is SOOOOO much to tweak and play with on this board----as much as any good Abit overclocking board like the IC7 Canterwood.
This is gonna be fun----hope it overclocks nicely and the benches are good.
If this thing will do 250 FSB with good timings and decent Vcore-----it WILL be a Canterwood killer----who wants to pay $100 more for a board that basically does the same thing.
Plus----call me a guy who just likes the underdog----but I LOVE the idea of VIA with as good or better product than Intel----and it being a whole lot cheaper!!!
Capitalism and competition-----don't you love it!
    John

I just got this board myself, and put it in my machine and did a WindowsXP reinstall.
Haven't had a chance to test it out in games. Only thing I had to do was put the motherboard in 4X AGP mode, as my Radeon 9700 Pro has the problem when running in 8X mode, within 3 to 5 minutes of booting WindowsXP, my monitor goes in to powerdown mode and only way to get it out of it, is to press the reset button. My Radeon 9700 Pro is a revision 1.1, which notoriously won't work in 8X AGP Mode.
Otherwise I like the board, espicailly the serial ATA controller, if I have to add more harddrives to my system.

  • Problems w/ MSI PT880 Neo-LSR

I built my sysytem last February and it ran great right out of the box with the current hardware I am still using( See Sig block). about a month ago I started getting a few windows crashes and lock-ups(win XP Pro). I wiped both my hard drives and re-installed, got the same problem. Windows loads VERY S...L...O...W...L...Y . I am also getting the blue screen of death from both hard drives, error messages from both DVD Drives, Cmos errors Floppy disk drive errors and VGA Controller errors.
I checked my PC health and saw that my Proc. was up to 130 deg F, sys was at 90 deg F and my 3.3 volt was bouncing between 2.8 and 3.0
I replaced the Cmos Battery and installed a couple fans thru the power supply. That brought my temps down to 120  and 90 but didn't seem to help the 3.3V power or any of the errors I've been getting. I updated My BIOS thru MSI Live updater and that didn't seem to help either
Any Help or troubleshooting I could get would be appreciated

    Hi,
    Add on to Danny's post.......
How big is case? Increasing fans will not help, unless you have a case to support this........ Try leaving side off case and see if this helps......
Have you checked for Viruses? Boot Sector only go on FDISK and format............
    Set :
    AGP > 1.6V
    DDR > 2.7V
Oh and check fans are in correct direction.........air-flow........the fans should have an arrow that is the air-flow.........

  • PT880 Neo-LSR and 2.8 p4 ht

ok bought a pt880 and a 2.8 p4, i moved my hd to this new case, and i disabled all the raid and network boot, but now it goes into the bios post, says it finds the hd, and hangs after find. i get the led msg "boot attempt" from the d-bracket, and thats all it does. no boot. do i have something wrong? it posts that correct p4 2.8, and posts the correct memory 512. i cant get it to boot. help! lol

The only think you missed efemekanic is my innate luck and 'magical touch' with computers  (Which makes you wonder why mine still won't boot XP, doesn't it? )
All joking aside, I have no clue why, but I was able to boot to a Win98SE floppy after playing around with my BIOS settings a bit.  Once there, I flashed to the v1.2 BIOS, which let me consistently boot to something called Knoppix.  Essentially, Knoppix is a distribution of Linux that you can boot from a CD, without ever having to install anything.  I flashed to the v1.4 BIOS last night, and my system still won't boot to XP (not going to try the installation until I get my new PSU in), but again, Knoppix works fine.
By the way, the E after your processors speed (2.8E) means it's a Prescott.  I believe C is Northwood, and (I think) A is Willamette.  Some one please correct me if I'm wrong on these (they're just my guess).
Good luck, and let me know how it works out!

  • How compatible are the airport express and extreme with the 2wire routers?

I have been spending ages trying to set up our connection with a linksys router due to the lack of signal from our 2wire and they just do not want to co-operate.  The 2wire is a 3800hgv-b with a special firmware from at&t to be able to be used for tv purposes as well and also so they can control their users.  The signal barely leaves the room its in and it seems like this would help boost it to other parts of the house.  Is this going to help my problems? Basically I don't want to use the 2-wire as a router just the AX and the 2-wire would just be used for tv.  I don't know how familiar everyone is with U-verse but we were given three plug links which all connect to the same network.  One goes to the 2-wire and we use one for a wired printer and I'm curious if i could use the last one to connect to the AX and broadcast it from upstairs.  The linksys struggled with this because it couldn't act as an access point very well and it was better off with just setting up a new network.  Would it be able to act as an access point for the 2wire? Basically I'm just curious if this is going to solve my problems, or at least most of them.

I have been spending ages trying to set up our connection with a linksys router due to the lack of signal from our 2wire and they just do not want to co-operate.
Since the "extend wireless network" feature used by Apple appears to be a proprietary function, it is extremely unlikely that an Apple device would "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal that is being transmitted from your 2-Wire router.....if this is what you are asking here.
If you were to use both an AirPort Extreme (connected directly to the 2-Wire by Ethernet cable) and an AirPort Express, then you would be able to configure the Express to "extend" the wireless network that is being broadcast by the AirPort Extreme.

  • PT880 Neo LSR - Black screen at boot up after post

    Hi all
I've been reading the forum for some time now and unfortunately haven't been able to fix my problem.
Right after post I have a delay of 30 sec. before XP starts loading, the screen being black meantime.
Just changed my PSU for a better quality one (cf. below) but this doesn't solve the issue.
Also desabled the boot rom options, SATA and LAN under bios to no effect.
Please also note that the GPU has a VGA and DVI outputs but the display only a VGA input. Therefore the display is connected to the VGA output of the GPU.
    Any idea will be welcome
Thx in advance for your help

Hey SeekerF.  I have the same MoBo that you have.  I had problems with it also.  I really believe that it is your BIOS.  When my computer would boot into windows, or sometimes right after you see the window xp logo, it would reboot.  I switched out my PSU but that didn't work.  I had version 1.2 of the BIOS, and had to upgrade to the latest version which is 1.4.  Your best bet is to download the latest version (from someone else's machine of course from the MSI website for you board) and save the files to a floppy.  Make sure you read the instructions very carefully when you are flashing the BIOS.  When you do this you WILL need a windows 98 or ME startup floppy.  If you can't get your hands on one you can go to http://www.bootdisk.com and you can the files from there to make one.  Once you boot up your machine with the startup disk, just follow the instructions on how the flash to the latest version.  Ever since I upgraded to 1.4 I have not had any problems and my system has been stable.  Hope this helps.  Later.
