How complete is iPhoto's Import function?
I have many many photos generated from older versions of iPhoto. These photos are now stored wherever iPhoto put them on my internal hard drive. That drive is running OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. iPhoto functions nicely in that setting.
About a year ago I added an external start-up hard drive running OSX 10.8.5. (I’ve maintained the older internal 10.6.8 drive for backward compatibility reasons.)
I’m about to upgrade the external 10.8.5 HD to Yosemite, and then add the latest iPhoto software, v. 9.6 apparently.
Once Yosemite and the latest iPhoto are running on the external start-up HD can I import all the old photos along with their hierarchy of albums and folders, and all individual photo dates, notes, etc.?
In other words, I’d like to get into the newest version of iPhoto, BUT I don’t want to lose any of the old photos or any of the accompanying information or organization. I’ve built that over the years and don’t want to lose it.
I presume the latest iPhoto has an “Import” capability. How competently does it function?
re: "The latest version of iPhoto, v9.6, requires 10.10, so you're not going to be doing that. You'll need to purchase an iLIfe 11 disk to upgrade to the closest you can get."
- Huh?
- I'm not going to be doing what?
- Why do I need an iLife 11 disk?
Thanks for your reply, but how closely did you read my post?

I want to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer 8, but the import link under file in Firefox is ghosted out and doesn't allow me access. How can I access the Firefox import function?A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

How to prevent iPhoto from importing automatically
There are times I want to load photos onto my computer but do not want iPhoto to import them.
How can I prevent iPhoto from importing photos automatically when photos are loaded onto my computer?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.Matt,
That's quite a full trash can. To clarify, we're talking about the iPhoto Trash at the bottom of the Source Pane (left column) and not the regular Finder trash can that lives on your Desktop, right? If there are photos you wish to save in the iPhoto trash, drag them to the word Library at the top of the Source Pane and they will be restored to the library. When you're ready you can try to empty the trash: from the menu bar choose iPhoto > Empty trash. However, you may have trouble with so many files at once. If the trash won't empty you'll have to move the files back to the library and delete them in smaller batches (say 500) until they're all gone.
Where was the iPhoto library recovered photos folder? Did you see it in the Source Pane of the iPhoto window, or was it inside the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder?

Import function is blocked. Can this be changed with a security setting?
I want to import bookmarks that I saved from old computer. When I go to File in the menu bar, the import is blocked (shaded white). How can I activate the import function?
Do you have an HTML or JSON backup from that old computer?
See:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.
A JSON backup starts with: <nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":</nowiki>
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("bookmarks.xxxx") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension. -
Howdy All,
Every time I import a set of photos into Iphoto, the import function locks up at the end of the import, thus requiring me to force quit the program (when I just simply try to quit, i get a window telling me the import process is still going on).
When I re-open the program, my photos are properly imported and I can go along my merry way, but it's frustrating having to do this (force quit & exit) every time. Any ideas what the cause of this is and what the solution is?
Thanks All.Howdy.
A rebuild of the database might help. Hold the Option and Command keys while launching iPhoto. Check the first 3 choices and leave it to work for a while.
Those force quits could eventually corrupt your database file. To protect yourself, make a duplicate of the file called Library6.iPhoto which is inside your iPhoto Library folder. (Do this in Finder.) Move the copied file out of the iPhoto library. Then if your library does have a catastrophic failure, you can replace that file with the one you backed up and restore your library. -
I'm importing more than 1800 photos, and it got stuck with 382 photos left to be imported. How can I finish the import completely?
What version of iPhoto?
Are these photos different in any way? Black and White, for instance?

How to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture
I would love to use Aperture for all my image-handling, but it seems iPhoto is hard-coded into the OS X workflow. For instance, when right-clicking images on the web, there's the possibility to save to iPhoto. Same thing thing when doing a slideshow in Preview, there's an option to add pictures directly to iPhoto.
Does anyone here know how to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture?
Thanks

Hi, you seem to be right, although I've never used that myself, it made me go off and test it myself.
However, you can use the 'save image to <my-downloads-folder>' feature, and then import the images into Aperture. Which is what I've been doing anyway. It's a two step process for sure, but it'll work.
I'm very much like you, and trying to swap from iPhoto to Aperture. I have to say that I haven't actually run iPhoto since I got Aperture though.
Cheers

Error in iPhoto with importing photos. How to reset?
I disconnect my iPhone from my MacBook because importing photos in iPhoto didn't work well.
Now I want to try it again but iPhoto keeps saying: "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for import to complete."
But it import nothing at all...
How can I import photos again?Quit iPhoto if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data.
Select the active iPhoto Library in the Finder. By default, it's in the Pictures subfolder of your home folder, but you may have put it elsewhere. Right-click or control-click the icon, then select
Show Package Contents
from the contextual menu.
In the Finder window, you may now see a folder named "Import". Open that folder and move its contents to the Desktop. Do the same with the folder named "Auto Import", if it's present. Make no other changes.
Close the window. Launch iPhoto and test. -
How do I get iphoto to import videos from my iphone 3s? It only imports photos, not videos. My iPhoto is v. 4.0.3.
My iPhoto is v. 4.0.3.
Is your QuickTime up to date?
Video importing requires QuickTime 7.6.2 or later.

How can i save my importing photos in iPhoto but edit in photoshop elements 11?
how can i save my importing photos in iPhoto but edit in photoshop elements 11?
You have two options:
1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and send the photos from iphoto. Save (not Save As) without changing the name or format and iPhoto will remember the original + the last edited version. (To get back to the original you will have to lose the edits, though.)
2. Export the photos from iphoto, work on the copies, make all the changes you want to name and format and then reimport the edited versions to iphoto as new files. This lets you save as many different versions as you like. -
