How complex does my log-on password need to be?

I use 1Password to create very complex passwords for accessing websites and various accounts, but I'm wondering how complex do I need to make the password that lets me log onto my computer? In other words, is it realistic to worry about a brute force attack on my physical laptop?
Do I need an 8-digit (or more) password every time I re-start the laptop?

Who will have access to your Macbook Pro?
     Are they savvy enough to guess your password?
     Are they capable of using a password cracker to determine the password?
     Will you leave them alone long enough for them to just remove the hard drive?
How sensitive is the data on the Macbook Pro?
     Is it so sensitive that you need to encrypt the entire hard drive?
If someone steels your laptop, you can't create a password strong enough to keep them out unless you encrypt it. You just pull the hard drive and mount it on another system. If it is not encrypted, you can do whatever you want with it.
If the above leads you to believe you need to encrypt it with FileVault, that password better be very good.
Your account password (if not used to decrypt the drive), can be as simple or complex as you need to thwart the first part, above.

Let's guess that it is 10.7 or later, and try this:
1. Restart the Mac while holding down command and R (two keys together).
2. When the computer boots you should see the image shown here. Select Disk Utilitiy and continue.

3. When DU runs, your hard drive is listed on the left. Select it, then First Aid, then click Repair Disk.
4. When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way.
If your OS is not 10.7 or later, to repair the disk you will need the OS disk that shipped with the computer.

Again depends what is wrong as you droped it that would proberbly void the warrenty. But do not dispare search the forums as it may be a problem that can be fixed by you and add a post to this forum explaining your problem in detail and some one will be able to help you.
There are some very clever poeple on here and you should only go for the service as alast resort.

The idea to jumpstart by change was not the smartest one, but gives you an opportunity to use that "temporary" account as permanent. You do not have a choice cause obviously despite you thinking that old account is no more -it does exist on Apple servers. And if you are unwilling to share your [email protected] with friend, just create one extra [email protected] for your friend. One suggestion - do not use gmail.

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

the password I had set, because I wasn't sure if i had maybe set it in Caps Lock or used a different number in the sequence. I got the message several times
about "too many attempts, try again later". Does the computer lock me from signing in even with the correct password after a certain amount of failed
attempts? If so, how long does this lock last for? When can I try again? Or is there something I need to do to remove that lock now? I'm pretty sure I

Do this:
1. Reboot
2. Hold apple key + s key down after you hear the chime. (command + s on newer Macs)
3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
(Type these commands very carefully)
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now
4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can change the passord on the old one.

It may be that you have a SnapFish.com account. Alot of long time customers of HP have SnapFish.com accounts and do not realize it. One of the printer software releases signed customers up automatically, and most people did not know, or forgot, because they never used it. Try going to SnapFish.com and using the forgot password link at the log in screen there. Once you have the password reset, go to ePrintCenter.com and use the SnapFish.com log in information to log in. If that does not help you may need to contact SnapFish.com directly to have them delete the account, or use a different email to register with.

What I concluded is that the phone information (with text message content) that we have came from the police department...when they conducted interviews, they asked for their phones and obtained the content, pictures, etc. that way. We also have logs from AT&T with information starting a few months prior to the incident; this information, however, is solely limited to who sent, who received, when, type of data, etc - NO content. I'm assuming that those are the logs that can be subpoenaed after the alloted amount of time, say, 10 days.

If you are planning on letting your children play with it wait 15 minutes before handing it to them and any purchases will require the password to be entered.
And go into Restrictions and turn inapp purchases off.

Its great to be able to buy songs thru the iTouch.
But how long does the session / password last after the first purchase?

With regard to what? I assume that since the link connected to your question was from the "How to update your iDevice" kb article, you are talking about seeing this behavior after you updated the iPad.
So, if that's the case, it really shouldn't take but a minute or so, if it even takes that long. If this has been going on for minutes and minutes, the update process is stuck now. You can try restarting the iPad and see if the iPad behaves normally. That might be all that you need to do to set things right again. If restarting just takes you back to this page loading again, you can try rebooting the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
