How compress 3 DV tape inputs for multiclip editing, assemble final program

I have 3 timecoded 95 minute DV tapes of a concert I want to input to FCP for editing in multiclip. This is my first time.
What's a good how-to reference to 1) compress the content to fit my 250 Gig hard drive, 2)edit in multiclip, and 3) assemble the finished program by importing the uncompressed clips I end up using?

Is your media simply MiniDV, or another format recorded on DV tape?
If MiniDV, it should all fit easily on your harddrive (provided it is a drive other than your system drive). DV-NTSC takes about 13Gb/hr of footage, so you're well under.
Do not render until after you've finished your multiclip edit and 'collapsed' the multiclip.

Now this Mac is definitely associated with your account and can now play media that you purchase from the iTunes Store as well.
*My banks do the same thing when I pop up making a purchase with my bank cards somewhere in the world I have never made a purchase before. They call me and email me and want to know if it is indeed me using the card.

How can I add support for JPEG 2000 to Final Cut Express 4? I need to export an .mov file in the JPEG2000 format but it is not available as a quicktime export option. Is this something that I can add via a quicktime .component? Would appreciate any insight anyone might have... Thank you.

I believe you need to purchase the QuickTime Pro key ($29.99 USD). Once you enter the registration number in System Preferences for QuickTime Player 7, it 'unlocks' several export features, including JPEG2000.

Mac Pro 8-core too slow for Multiclip editing

I have a Mac Pro 8core (pre-Nehalem), with 4 gb of memory. I'm doing some multiclip editing,and even with RT set to the lowest preview quality, my system stills blocks from time to time. I don't want to invest in a RAID-system, because I don't do multiclip editing that often. Is there an other - not expensive - way to speed up my Mac? Would adding memory - say to 6 gb - help?
I also have the impression that since I upgraded to Leopard Snow, the computer is much less stable. FCP shut down twice unexpectedly yesterday.

You don't say what format of HD you're editing but the fluidity of playing multiclip sequences is really dependent on the system's ability to provide all the streams of video in a timely manner. This means hard drive throughput is essential. A good quality sata drive in a MacPro can read somewhere around 115 MB/sec when empty. It will spool material less effectively as it fills.
Very good quality esata RAID systems can provide 5x that - which is why people utilize them. (fwiw-I've run 16 streams of 720p24 DVCProHD off of a Caldigit HDOne in a multiclip sequence without a hiccup. )
What can you do if you don't want to pay the price for the right gear for the job?
1. populate all your internal bays with fast hard drives
2. empty the drives
3. spread your captured files across all three (non system drives)
This will distribute the load as much as possible without going to a RAID setup.
Once you have all the drives empty, you could try setting up a RAID 0 set using Disk Utility and see if that works for you. One caveat - if you decide to go the internal software RAID 0 route, recognize there is no failsafe should you encounter a serious system crash. Everything on all drives that are part of the RAID set can be compromised.

Subclip timecode issues for MultiClip edit...Help!?!?

Here is the issue. 2 camera shoot, Cameraman 1 pushed pause during a live concert video shoot.
In order to make a multiclip edit with the other camera's footage, I have made subclips of this camera's footage on each side of the pause.
The other camera in the shoot had issues as well so I have been forced to use a sequence and alternant timecodes to line everything up with my sound file.
Everything works well until I get to the subclip after the pause. I try to modify the alternant timecode to correspond with the sequence timecode but when I enter the approporate number FCP forces a different number to appear.
My hunch is that because these are subclips of the same captured clip I am not able to modify the timecode as I want to. Can anyone confirm this hunch?
And...what can I do about this? Do I have to recapture? I hope not. I have tried to create a new master clip in the modify window but the problem persists. I am so close to getting this into the multicam editor I can taste it. Thanks.

Solved it... I ended up having to re-capture the shot after the pause so it would be a seperate media file. I guess I could have copied the file outside of FCP, renamed and imported the file seperatly... I realize this problem was caused by not setting the capture up properly to treat the jump in time code appropriately.

How choose destination folder for images edited in external program?

Using LR 2.3 with the Windows 7 beta. It seems to me there should be a preference or option to set the destination folder for an image sent for editing in Photoshop. The default is the folder where the originals are located, which seems to me to be the worst choice. In any event, I can't find where in LR the user can choose a destination folder for the edited image. Ideally, the user should be able to choose this for each set of images being edited, and the choice would be available in the dialog that appears when the user sends an image out to Photoshop.
So is there a way to set the destination folder for the image that results from sending an image out for editing in Photoshop or other external application?
Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much. I have CS4, but haven't installed it yet. So I have been using the rendering option. Apparently that is part of the problem, because I seem to recall that there was a Save As option shown when LR 2 was compatible with whatever the ACR with CS3 was.
Saving with originals seems an odd default. I wouldn't think too many photographers mix processed work with originals, and making the destination folder choice always available wouldn't seem to be a particularly difficult piece of engineering.

How to capture user input for customer exit processing?

I need to calculate the number of working days elapsed in the current fiscal quarter BASED on the USER INPUT on the reporting front. i.e., say the fiscal quarter started on 1 July 2005 and if the user enters 10 July 2005, I should get the value 8 (Assume that Monday through Friday are all workdays). If the user enters 12 July 2005, I should get 10. I have written customer exits and know how to use factory calendar, but <b>THE CHALLENGE</b> is how do I <b>CAPTURE</b> the user input and use it in my exit? During the varible definition, if I select the check box "Ready for input" then the customer exit is not being processed and unless I check that box I can't get a user entry! If I look at the import values in the customer exit, I see i_t_var_range with type rrs0_t_var_range. My strong feeling is that this parameter gets the user input, but I am unable to use it as the customer exit is not being called if I make the user to input the data. Based on the empirical evidence, I felt that user input and customer exit can not co-exist!! Please somebody prove me wrong and let me know how can I use the user input to process my "customer-exit" variable. I would really appreciate any input from the BW community here.

How to have multiple inputs for a Pic Ring?

Alright, I've got this program in which there is a pic ring with multiple pictures on a tab page on the Front Panel. And on the Block Diagram the Pic Ring receives a number through a numeric indicator. There are multiple boolean variables set up and depending on which one is true that dictates which number the indicator pushes on to the Pic Ring. However, I can only connect one boolean up to the indicator at a time. If I connect mutliple wires to the indicator the wires become broken immediately. I have a screen shot depicting the setup in the Block Diagram.
Anyway, my question is basically how to setup a numeric indicator for a Pic Ring to have multiple inputs?

You will probably need some sort of case structure to determine your input.
It looks to me like you are searching a common string for whether it contains Valve1, Valve2, Valve3 and so on. Depending on which one it finds you are outputting that picture. I would need more information as to what exactly you were doing, but I might look in the string for "Valve" then a number and feed that output into a case structure. For instance if you find Valve3 in the string you send the input corresponding to Valve3 into the picture ring

DV tape saved for later editing

I have lots of old DV tapes and would like to find a way to copy them to the computer, then save them on DVD disk, or some other media other than hard disk. Then I would be able to work on them at a later date.
I now have a mini-DV recorder and have to borrow the older DV recorder/player from my son, which means he doesn't have use of his equipment. We live miles apart so I can't just borrow his when I have time to work on a project. I have so many old DV's that it takes time to edit them before I can put to final DVD form? When I download the movies to my iMac it takes a lot of GB's.
What is the CD-ROM storage option? what about archive project? or is there any other solution without spending big bucks?

I guess I didn't explain myself very well, I'm the one with the mini-DV and my son has the older model. The years worth of tapes I need to get onto computer aren't the mini-DV but the older ones and I have to use his older model. I can see though, that it doesn't make much difference. The only way to get a good product is to keep it in original format until I get ready to do the DVDs.
I guess I can start again to transfer the tapes to an external as that seems to be the best solution. I had tried to do this before--READ the horror story below. I guess the best thing to do is start with a 500GB and get another if I need it. Any recommendations? I am certainly staying away from OWC.
I had bought me a 1GB OWC Mercury AL mirrored set (external) to put all the old movies on so I could return his older model to him. Ran into very bad problems--a real horror story. The the mirroring unit didn't work on the first set (housed in two units) I got and I didn't know enough to know it wasn't working and had transferred a lot of tapes to it before I realized the mirror part didn't work.
They had me send it back and sent a replacement. Well, this one didn't work either. The main unit was configured for 1GB, but the second unit was divided into two 500GB units so that one wouldn't work. Spent lots of time fooling around with it. By this time I had spent a lot of time (about a month) and effort on getting it to work and was extremely frustrated. Decided to send it back and get my money back. What a hassle. Since I was asking for my money back, which didn't seem unreasonable to me considering they'd had my money for a month and I didn't have a product that workd. They wouldn't cover return shipping. Cost me over $40.
The reason I had bought OWC was because I had heard great things about their product.
Can anybody explain why my the 160GB internal and 320GB external are listed 3 times below my message?

If I want it to be "-E" instead of "-Edit" for example, or "-Mod" instead of the long and ugly "-Modifier" in french version.

How to obtain an ID for Digital Editions

Hello, at 21:30, 10/06/2014, I downloaded and installed Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 on my Windows 7 laptop in order to read eBooks (on my Sony Xperia Z 4.4.2 android tablet, Samsung Galaxy S3 4.4.2 android phone, and Apple iOS7 iPad 4). The software installed on my laptop without error. I tried to create an ID but my Opera browser generated an error message and '404 page not found'. I tried again to create an ID but Adobe informed me that my email was already in use. I checked my hushmail.com email account and no message from Adobe. It looks like Adobe has created an ID and registered my account but has not issued the ID to my email account. This means I am unable to use Adobe Digital Editions. How do I recover my ID? Is the easiest solution to just create another email account and have the ID sent there? Suggestions and help much appreciated.
By the way, am I right to assume I can use Adobe Digital Editions to send eBooks to android and Apple devices?

Follow Up - I managed to verify my copy of Adobe Digital Editions. The ID required is simply the email used for registering with Adobe. Doh!

What kind of relationship are you trying to set? I'm assuming you're referring to a foreign key constraint? The most straightforward way of doing this is to configure a column in a table to be an identity column. By doing so, when you add a record to the table SQL Server will automatically create a unique value for this column. You can then set this column to be the one-half of your foreign key constraint. As far as getting the value of this column after SQL Server has added the new row, the way I've always done it is by adding a parameter to a stored procedure. Here's an example of a stored procedure that adds a row to a table and returns the value of the identity column for that new record:

How to optimize macbook pro for video editing and 3d animation

Hello Everybody - I've had a macbook pro for about 5 years now. It works great, havn't had any issues with it yet, but I've started doing more video editing and 3D animation work on it with FCP7 and Blender (usually using photoshop at the same time). Even when I quit all other programs, it's not really able to handle many things I try to do in Blender (for example cloth simulation) and I end up waiting a while with the wheel of death and then having to force quit. I'm not in the position to buy an entirely new macbook pro right now - so I'm wondering if there are any ways I can modify my current macbook to render it more able to handle the heavy processing load?

Honestly, IMO, no. Even if you were to upgrade your HDD to a SSD, and increase your RAM, your CPU and GPU just aren't equipped for the tasks you ask of it (and there is no way to upgrade either your CPU or GPU). It would improve performance to upgrade these parts on your machine, no question, but ultimately, the processors would act as a bottleneck for performance/

Captions (in Organizer): how do I display them for easy editing?

Hi All,
In PSE5, I was able to easily add/edit a caption for any photo while working in the Organizer. It would display a edit box for easy viewing/editing of the caption below each picture. But PSE7 seems to no longer have that feature. Does that mean we have to use menus EVERY time we want to add a caption to a picture? I hope there's a way to do this without the extra mouse-clicks or keystrokes. I know it sounds trivial, but think about entering captions for hundreds of photos...

My mistake, in PSE5 I was able to enter captions directly on the screen when viewing a photo full-screen. Same is true in PSE7...
It would be a nice enhancement though if we could enter captions directly in the thumbnail view in Organizer without having to use menus. It would be nice to be able to SEE our captions here too.
