How connect 2 Mini's to one usb printer

Can a double usb plug at the printer be used with a separate usb cable from each printer (separate Mini's different systems on opposite sides of the room with printer inbetween)
or is it necessary to have a powered usb hub at the printer to do that?

In order to get M3 to recognize the HP laser printer HL 2040 attached to M2:
From M3 downloaded printer driver. installed it.
However, unlike other printer drivers there are sequences required before it will even show up. I followed those procedures as described by HP which entailed having to connect the PRINTER directly to the Mini3 - then HAD TO disconnect AC and USB cables from printer and connecting the USB cable DIRECTLY to M# . THEN restart and finally it appeared as a CONNECTED printer.
[that seems to have defeated the situation of finding it as a remote via the M2]
The printer was then disconnected from M3 and placed back by M2 and connected to M2. Both Mini3 and Printer were turned off and restarted with the printer reconnected to Mini2.
On m3 In the "add printer" window where the other printers connected to the Mini 2 are shown, it does NOT appear. The other two are listed as Bonjour Shared
I think that direct connect (which HP required to 'see' the printer) confused the Mini3 running 10.6.8 - the one t
On M3 the ADD Printer panel does not show it just lists the other two.
On M3 the Print and Fax Preference shows it as (red dot) offline last used
and under that is the Deskjet as (green dot) idle
so it's obvious the M3 is 'seeing' it in two different ways.. one as connected, but not selected for the Laser
printer and no way to get it to show u p.... do suppose it's necessary to REMOVE it from the Print and Fax preferences panel?

I had exactly the same problem with Windows 7 64-bit and HP Photosmart 2610xi. All you need to do is right click on the installation program, go to properties, go to compatibility mode, select Windows Vista SP2 and optionally check run as administrator. It worked after that.

  • How to connect 10.9 Mac to USB printer via E2500 router?

So I've established that Linksys Connect software is incompatible with a Mac running OS 10.9 Mavericks.
Is Linksys Connect the only way to connect a Mac with a printer connected to the E2500 router? Or is there another way to make it work?

New operating systems and older software always have compatibly issues. Recently firmware updates have been pushed out. Maybe one will come for the E2500.
In a business environment you would normally share out the printer from a server or PC. Sharing from a router will be problematic.
How about the reverse; sharing the printer from the MAC to the PC? Do you have an old computer lying around you can turn into a Printer server? I just had a thought, there are actual printer server devices made for this as well.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Two wireless router/modems, one USB printer, one shared hard drive

Hi, I am looking to use my new mac mini server to do the following:
    1) Link my two separate modems together into one network (Ethernet link aggregation?)
    - FYI; I also have an airport extreme, and possibly an extra mac mini at my disposal
    2) Share a hard drive both internally and via a new FTP
    3) Share a printer that currently only works when connected to one network.
Is it possible? Do I need to buy any additional hardware?
Please feel free to go into as much detail as you can!

You will likely want a mid-grade gateway with load balancing and link failover, and probably also public DNS services with both of your IP addresses returned in round-robin.
I would not recommend tussling with a Mac to (try to) make it into an IP gateway/firewall/router device.
    [Here is a selection process for a gateway/firewall/router widget|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1724] for a server.
The printer and the rest of the stuff located behind the box is secondary picking a box with the expected features, and then port-forwarding or VPN access will be available to, well, whatever.
Big video (serving) activity can easily exceed the bandwidth available with DSL links.

  • How do you connect a usb printer and usb external hard drive to the airport extreme, as it only has one usb port?

I'm thinking about upgrading my old 802.11g router for a new airport extreme. Can it connect to a usb printer and external hard drive at the same time and acutally work. It only has one usb port on the back.
    thank you!

To add multiple USB printers and/or HDDs, you just first need to connect a USB hub (powered prefereably) to the AirPort's USB port, and then, add the USB devices to the hub.

How to connect my wireless printer to my iPad HP dest jet 3511e all in one SN [Personal Information Removed]

    Hi Alicerief,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I understand that you would like to know how to print from your iPad to your Deskjet 3511 printer.
Your printer is AirPrint and ePrint capable so you should be able to use either method to print once your printer is connected to your wireless network. The instructions on connecting your printer to your wireless network can be found in your user guide. You can designate it as a wireless printer during the setup as detailed in the section "Traditional wireless connection" on page 32.  If you have already installed your printer onto your computer using a USB connection, the instructions to switch to a wireless connection can also be found on page 32 in the section titled "Change from a USB connection to a wireless network".
I have included several reference documents for you. The first one reviews printing from an Apple mobile device to your printer. I have also included the document on how to setup ePrint and customize the printer's ePrint email address. There are two mobile apps available from HP that will allow you to send print jobs to your printer, the HP ePrint mobile app and the HP All-in-One Printer Remote app. The AiO app will also allow you to scan from your printer to your iPad. I have included the FAQ documents for both apps.

  • TS1253 I am connected to internet through  modem. How can I use Time Capsule as a wreless harddrive and connection to USB printer

Can I use a Time Capsule as a part of my network> I am connected to internet through modem and want to use Time capsule as  a wireless harddrive and wireless connection to usb printer. How can I do that? Please help

This type of setup is not officially supported by Apple.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule this way, but please take a minute to consider a few things that you may not have thought about, as this is...frankly....the worst possible way that you could configure the Time Capsule.
Wireless backups will take twice as long as normal wireless.  Why? The signal must make a "double hop".
Hop "one" would be from your Mac to the wireless router, then the signal must make hop "two" to get back to the Time Capsule.
In addition to doubling the time for backups to occur, this doubles the chances for an error to occur during a backup.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled at all on the Time Capsule when it is configured this way, so backup over much faster Ethernet is not possible.
The USB port is enabled, so assuming that the printer is compatible, it could be configured to connect that way. Keep in mind that only printing is supported. If you have an All-in-One device, advanced functions like scan, copy, maintenenance will not be supported.
So, do you really want to try this?  There are no guarantees here that things will work at all.

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

    Rufus Cat-
Even if it was compatible, AirPrint does not work through a USB link, only Ethernet or WiFi.
I do not see your HP 4500 listed on Apple's list of AirPrint compatible printers.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>  Therefore you need to take another approach.  To start, I suggest you download the free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz.  It has limitations, but should get you printing with your existing setup.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share and PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
Your best option may be to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs that are reported to do that well are Printopia and FingerPrint.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

  • How to connect to the USB printer

I connect a USB printer to the USB port of my Airport Extreme.  Can someone help advise the procedure for the computers in the network to connect to the USB printer.  Thanks!

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at thisiFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

My Ipad mini does not see my printer. my wife's ipad2 does. We both use IOS8 and upgraded at the same time. How can I remedy this?

    OK great info!
I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:
By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.
    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…
    One person commented:
This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.
    Thanks for any additional comments.

  • How do I use more than one USB device with Airport Extreme?

I would like to plug a shared hard drive into my new airport extreme and still be able to plug in a shared printer as well. How am I supposed to do this with only one USB port. Do I use a USB hub???
Is it possible to connect a hard drive using one of the ethernet ports?

To use multiple USB devices you would use a powered USB hub.
You can connect a hard drive to one of the Ethernet ports providing the hard drive is a NAS and supports Ethernet connections. In that situation the NAS hard drive is just like any other Ethernet client and the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not handle the file sharing services. The drive itself would provide the file sharing services.

HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Version 3.2.1 does not work on iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007. Only recognizes scanner not USB printer.
I would like to print via the USB connection instead of wireless (the wireless does work, and the scanner works via USB).
I tried connecting the printer directly (via USB) to my MacBook Pro laptop and it worked just fine.
How can I make this printer work on my iMac?
I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP and we did every combination of installation of drivers ad nausum and their bottom line is that it is a Mac problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Will be sending this printer back to Amazon if I can't make it work on the USB.
I am open to questions or suggestions
    Thanks,
    Chet

After 4 hours on the phone with HP and another hour with Apple (Mavericks support) no real solution other than check everything (removed everything from Login Items, removed all HP software anywhere in the system reboot, reinstall printer) then when nothing worked for the 4500, did an OS Reinstall (boot with CMD+R).
The Mavericks support group did open an incident (# 542875311) and I will update it when I figure out how to find it on the system.
My feel is that the base problem is that somewhere between the HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.49-2 package and the Apple HP Printer software in the Library (version 2.16.1) the app for printing via the USP Port just does not get installed for the mid 2007 20 inch iMac. The scanner is recognized on the USB Port and the Printer works fine on Wi-Fi. I have too many devices to burden my home network with anothe device. Also, every time I put any HP Printer on Wi-Fi, my router (Netgear N600 WNDR3400 running 12 to 20 devices depending on who is home) gets wonky (but that's anothe story...).
Additionally, when I attach the HP Envy 4500 to my MacBook Pro (2010) it works perfect - print and scan via the USB prot and both functions show in the System Preferences - Printers and Scanners just as expected and just as the 3050 does.
