  • Connecting and backing up external HDD to a Time Capsule

    Hi All,
Running a Macbook pro Retina. I would like to do the following things with a Time Capsule:
Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
I would be grateful for help with the following queries:
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Thanks for your help in advance. I know some of these questions may seem obvious, but having seen contradictory information online I'd like to make sure of my ground.

Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Technically, you could do this. The question is whether you should do this.  The USB 2.0 port on the Time Capsule brings new meaning to word s-l-o-w, so copies and access are going to sluggish at best.  The port operates at about half the speed of a USB port on a computer.
As far as locating media on the USB drive, you would not want to locate a "working"  library there, as the experts in the iPhoto and Aperture forums strongly recommend against this, as well as Apple in their support documents. An iTunes Library is going to be really slow as well if you are thinking of that, and the library will tend to get lost, so you will wind up pointing iTunes to the library on a regular basis.
I've learned the hard way that it is much better to locate media on a drive that is directly attached to the Mac. Access is much faster and more reliable, and Time Machine can back up both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
That is not possible, since Time Machine can only back up data on a Mac, or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac.
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
    No, see answer above.
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Use a powered USB hub with the hard drive unless the drive has its own power supply. Sometimes though, you still have to use a powered USB hub with a drive, even when the drive has its own power supply.  You won't know if he drive will work until you try it out.
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Apple designed the Time Capsule to be "always on" since there is not even an "Off" switch on the device.  Network connections will remain a lot more stable if you leave the TC on.  With Yosemite, the TC has a hard enough time not losing network connections. Forcing the TC to establish new connections every time that you power it off and back on is bound to create issues.

  • I have followed Apple support Article HT4527 for moving itunes but have insufficient space on my new PC for the complete library of.  How can I leave music on the external HDD but associate the content on my external HDD with my pc itunes when it is open?

I have followed the Apple Support Section Article HT 4527 and have moved itunes media onto an external Hard Drive.  The complete file is 103GB in size.
I have downloaded the latest itunes onto my new PC.
When I follow the article and try moving the itunes file onto the new PC, I am informed that there is insufficient space on my new PC.
In any case, like my old system, I want to leave my music on the external HDD and just have the music library displayed in itunes when I click on the "Music" folder.
How can I get itunes on the new computer to interogate my external HDD to just list the library and leave the music on the external HDD?

you can do this by keeping the external hard drive connected and doing the following
-hold shift key down on computer while opening iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose a library
-select choose library, iTunes should bring up your explorer windows where you can search for the external HD
-after you find the external HD find the iTunes folder you just copied to it
-after opening the iTunes folder look for the file that says iTunes library.itl or if you can't see that extenstion just look for a document looking thing in the iTunes folder that shows up as a database file
-double click the database file and boom iTunes should load your library without having to copy it to the computer
PS: do make sure that if you are going to do it this way, make sure that the external HD is connected at all times, because if you don't then you will get exclamation marks next to your iTunes songs
double PS: if you are unsure how to find out if the iTunes library file is a database file just right click it and choose properties and under the type it should say database file
    hope this helps:)

  • Archiving mailbox folders to an external HDD - How?

I have a Mac Bool Pro and I have a large number of mailbox folders that I do not use very much. I would like to offload these folders to a large external HDD and remove them from the internal HDD of the Macbook pro...how do I do this ?
I also then want to be able to access the archived material from the external HDD simply if I need these at a later date ....any ideas ?
Thanks to anyone that can hel me

Well, strictly speaking, you can do this. Two ways. One is tricky:
How are you at editing SQL databases?
    This user found a way:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3216539?tstart=30
But tread very carefully - get it wrong and you'll hose everything. Make a back up first.
    The other is expensive:
Purchase Aperture, and if you have the latest versions of both these apps, then you can open the Library with Aperture, and use the relocate Masters command.
Or, in the end, make a managed Library. A Referenced Library is more work for zero gain.

  • Need help how to recover my external HDD

I just got my new MacBook pro 13. Yesterday
I was trying to instill windows 7
    I opened bootcamp
It's asked my to connect USB external device
I have connected my external HDD it's 80 GB Toshiba External HDD full with 70 GB of data with NTFS windows format
I thought it will store the windows 7 in the External HDD
    I put a DVD also
I though it will take the windows 7 from the external HDD to the DVD
But inrealized it was erasing and formatting my external HDD
So I interrupt the operation and disconnecting my external HDD from MacBook pro
When I connect it again I found some folders of windows 7 and I didn't find my files
How to solve this problem please help me it's 70 GB data size

Sorry to hear of your problem.
Also sorry to tell you your data is more then likely gone.
Hopefully that external was just a Backup for data that exists on other storage devices, like on one of your computers. If not it is gone.
Never have I heard of Boot Camp asking for any one to connect an External drive. In fact Windows can not be installed on an external drive. So I have no idea why BC would ask you connect one. Maybe for the Windows Support files that are downloaded from the Apple server at the start of the Boot Camp Assistant. But then they can be saved to the internal HDD.

  • How to reformat external HDD?

    Hi,
I'm using a 1TB Hitachi external HDD. It has been working fine for a long time, but somehow it doesn't mount anymore. I opened Disk Utility and tried to repair it, but that didn't work. It showed me this message:
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
How do I back up the files on a disk I can't open and how do I reformat it?
    Regards,
    Chris Wijland

One of the misconceptions that circulate on ASC is the idea that a journaled HFS volume can be corrupted by a forced unmount, as for example in a system crash or a power failure. That idea is false.
With filesystem journaling, when the volume is remounted after a forced unmount, the directory is automatically repaired, and files are restored to their previous state, using redundant information (the journal) stored on the drive. This is very well established technology, and for all practical purposes, it always works—unless the journal itself is corrupt due to a hardware failure in the drive or elsewhere in the data path. So if the directory of a journaled volume is found to be corrupt, the storage device hosting the volume has thrown at least one unrecoverable hardware error.
People who don't understand journaling will tell you to repair the corrupt volume with Disk Utility (if possible), or with Disk Warrior otherwise, and then go on using the drive as if everything is fine. That might have been good advice years ago, before the introduction of HFS journaling, when it was common for volumes to be corrupted as the result of forced unmounting. Today, because forced unmounts no longer cause that kind of corruption, it's relatively rare—or should be—and when it does happen, the implications are different.
My opinion is that when a drive throws such a severe error that a volume directory not only can't be restored by journal replay, but also can't be repaired by Disk Utility, that drive should no longer be trusted with data. It should be taken to a recycling center.
Deric Horn, the head of filesystem engineering at Apple, gave a presentation at WWDC 2012 in which he stated, with regard to journaled HFS (starting at offset 3:18 in the recording):
The journal means that you can pull power at any time, and your filesystem is still intact. There shouldn't be any data corruption or any volume corruption on that disk.
You can hear the presentation by registering for a free developer account with Apple and going to this page. (Eventually the link will break; if that's already happened, you'll just have to take my word for it.) Look for "What's New In The Filesystem" near the bottom.
If a poster on this site knows more about HFS than the Apple software engineer in charge of it, then the latter should be fired, and the former should get his job. Until that happens, I suggest you believe what Horn says.

  • How do I back up my iPhone through iTunes to an external HDD; my iTunes library is already on the external HDD

Hello, this is my first time posting a question to the apple support community.
I have a bit of a (possibly unique) problem. Due to space limitations on my internal SSD, I have moved my iTunes library to an external HDD. However iTunes still backs up my iOS devices locally (~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup). This is causing a problem as it is making my SSD very full, the only way to remedy this is to remove old backups manually. Is there anyway to backup these iOS devices to the external HDD where my iTunes library is?
    Thanks very much!

I am a bit confused now.  I did the download and extraction of the junction utility.  Now I want to backup my 32 gb iPhone 5 to the external, not the internal hard drive of my computer.  I didn't quite understand the example of the path they wanted me to use.  Should I physically just cut and paste the folder of my backup from Settings and Documents, etc., or how do you get the junction utility to do that?  I'm not following and I'm usually excellent with computers.
I'm on a PC, running XP.  Thanks.
    Lori

  • HT1349 very slow external HDD and usb drive connected to Apple Extreme Router

    Hello
So I got a western digital USB drive (500gig) and western digital Live 2TB.
I bought a new Apple Extreme router and connected them both.
USB drive and external hdd (WD Live 2TB) very slow when connected to Apple Extreme Router, using Lion 10.7 and updated both firmware for router, western digital and Airport Utility.
Slow means, it takes half an hour to copy 200 Mb of file to the WD Live 2TB, and its connected to my router with a gigabit ethernet cable!
Is someone else having the same problem, I thought even over usb I should get around 2-5mb range.
I am using Macbook Pro and 802.11n with Lion 10.7.2
    Please Help

The USB WD 500 gig is connected to the Airport Extreme using a non-powered USB 2.0 hub, only two things a HP printer and the 500 gig is connected through it. I already formatted it to MAC OS Extended Journalled. ANd I think the speed didnt change.
For the WD 2TB Live I didnt format it to anything, started using it out of the box. I just updated its firmware. I was having the same speed even when I directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro using ethernet gigabit cable.
This WD 2TB Live doesnt have any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connectors, just the ethernet cable. I wasnt planning to carry it around. Just wanted to use it as a good ol NAS. So then I saw the fix somewhere and connected to this drive via AFP,  afp://MyBookLive._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Public and it become suddenly very fast. Just like how it should be, I easily copied 20 gigs in around 20-25 minutes. (This was dirctly connected to my computer)
So then I thought my problem is solved and disconnected my WD Live and connected it back to the Apple Router again, and the speed became very slow again. Now both the USB 500 gig and this 2TB Live are slow.
Time machine is also very slow.
Thing is I also have a linux and windows machine(in repair, but should be up soon), Since apple is the newest computer I have, I want to make it work on this first. I dont want to use the MACosx journaled on the 2TB right now. Besides formatting the USB 500 gig to this format didnt help with my speed. So the problem can be elsewhere.
    - I will try to get a powered USB hub as woodmeister50 suggested.
    - I dont know how to connect via iCloud as cigame suggested
Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I have tested and returned enough routers in past few weeks. I really want it to work on this combination LionOSX + Airport Extreme + WD Live.
    Thanks

  • How can i Move pic from internal hdd to an external hdd

hi everyone, i had a new Mac Book Air for a couple months ago, notice my internal hdd is getting full of pic, i would like to move them to an external HDD, how can i do that, i looked at the Iphoto library folder, nothing there, or i can not see them, any help will be appreciate it, and thank you in advance for your help...

If you have a large iPhoto library, you can save space by moving it to an external drive, yes. You will not be able to see the individual pictures in the library file - just move the entire IPhoto Library file to the other drive, then double-click it to open iPhoto and tell the application where your new library is.
If your image collection is not in iPhoto, where is it?

  • How do I use an iPhoto library stored on an external HDD (time capsule) on the new photos app?

I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Air with the latest 10.10.3 updates as such it has photos installed, not iPhoto. The MacBook I'm upgrading from still had 10.9 and as such had iPhoto app.
The MacBook air has a smaller SSD (128GB) than the HDD from my 2008 MacBook, and isn't big enough to store my iPhoto library (over 150GB). I want to just keep my library on the external HDD (which is an Apple Time Capsule).
When I follow the steps on Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support it seems to want to import all the photos, it took hours to get to just 3% of importing so I left over night. In the morning it said my MacBooks storage isn't big enough, which of course it isn't - I didn't want to import the library on my new MacBook Air !
I just want to change the location that photos looks for the library every time it opens, I don't actually want it to import the whole library which it appears to have tried to do. thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me!
It is connected over wireless. I don't have an RJ45 connection on the MacBook Air (although will purchase an adapter if needed). Even if I do have an RJ45 connection does this mean I can only ever use wired to view my external photo library?
I suppose having the wired connection will give me the time to organise my photos and delete some of the rubbish (which I would have liked to do on my old MacBook first but it was running too slow, especially with such a big photo library - so I treated myself to a new MacBook Air so I did!).
And I guess I could then put my favourite photos on the MacBook Air and have a separate library of older/lesser used photos on the Time Capsule and just access those as and when over RJ45 network cable. I prefer to use wireless as much as possible as the Time Capsule is normally stored in a room I don't use the MacBook or other wireless devices !

  • How to change the letter on external HDD

My external hard drive was originally on the F drive and with this I had all my iTunes music too. However, for some reason, my computer has stopped recognizing the F drive; the following message is displayed when trying to open this drive:
"The drive or the network connection that the shortcut 'F Drive.ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."
The problem I now have is that the external hard drive is now the G drive and iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the path (G:\iTunes) I have told it to use, i.e., my music is not loading properly and only a small fraction is playable.
Can anyone help me on this matter?

    Hi
I would recommend changing the external drive letter (G:) back to F.
Do you know how to do this?
After the external HDD was connected you should access the disk management and there you will see the HDD (single partitions) and the other drives.
Then you should mark the external HDD and should change the letter to F.
Possibly the F letter was reserved for another drive.
In such case you have to unlock the F letter by assigning another letter to the drive which uses the F letter.
    For details please check the Microsoft knowledge document;

  • I have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.
