How content-aware fill with smart objects

I've done a (hopefully) fairly exhaustive search, and don't see anything on how to use these things together...
Open an image as a smart object.  Add a layer for cloning and healing.  Maybe add a curves adjustment layer and/or a hue/sat adjustment layer.  Adjust things as needed.
Decide you want to extend the background on one side.  Increase the canvas on that side.  Select the chunk of canvas.  What process should be used to employ the content-aware fill for that new piece of canvas?  I don't seem to be able to have the smart object layer selected.  If I have another layer selected the fill fails saying there aren't enough opaque (?) pixels.

Oddly, I can't even find any discussion on this anywhere...  There's got to be a better way than what I've tried so far.
At present the only way I've found is to
duplicate the smart object
rasterize it
select the part to fill
do the content-aware fill
leave the selection on and copy/paste the selection so it's on a new layer
delete the rasterized copy of the smart object
There's gotta be a better/smarter/faster way than this...  How are other people doing this?

  • Content-aware fill with multi-colored background?

I've got a webpage footer to edit and I don't have the .psd file so I'm trying to use content-aware to take out an unwanted part.  Problem is, the background isn't one solid color and the area where I'm making the edit has a diffinitive color change...it's an actual line dividing the footer into two sections.  So, whenever I do the content aware fill it doesn't keep that line or the colors the way they "should" be.
Is this a situation where having the .psd file is a must?
    Thanks for your help!
    PS CS5 version 12.1 x32

I used the lasso tool to select first one colour area.  selected the Brush tool so I could Alt click on the background colour, and Alt backspace to fill the selection.   Then I inverted the selection (ctrl Shift i).  Used the lasso with the ALT key to remove the red area from the selection.  Resampled the other background colour, and Alt backspace to fill.
I did wonder if there was more going on in background because the tiny graphic you uploaded has some artefacts and I was not sure if they were supposed to be there, but a simple graphic like that is an easy thing to create from scratch.   When I have to include a logo in magazine artwork, and only have a horrible little sample that I couldn't bare to put on the page, I enlarge it to a useful size, and use it to trace a nice, new, clean graphic from scratch.

  • Suddenly content aware fill is UNaware?

SUDDENLY  this is how content aware fill works, or rather does not.
    Any ideas?  Thanks

You've given it an image with a white border, and expect it to know that the white pixels aren't desired.  It can't really know that.
You could put the image on a layer, use the Magic Wand tool to select the white, expand the selection just a little, then delete it.  Content Aware Fill knows that transparent pixels aren't candidates for being used to reconstruct parts of the image.
Or you could use layer masking.  Similarly, Content Aware Fill won't use parts of the image that are masked off to fill other parts.
    Hope this helps.

  • Content aware fill - how to sample from small area?

Is there a way how to sample from small area and then apply content aware fill to the much more bigger area? For example - there is an object on a table. The object fills 90% of the image and the table 10% image. Now, I just want to delete the object. But that doesnt work with content aware fill, because the area around it is much smaller. Is there a solution for this?

I am not sure that CAF is the right tool if you want to fill a large area sampling from a small area.  You might get away with doing it in stages
One trick is copy just those areas you want to sample from, to a new layer, and use CAF on that layer, but without seeing your image, it is difficult to say what the best aproach is going to be.

  • Remove a logo from a video clip with content aware fill?

I know you can remove logo in photos using content aware fill, but you can't do it to a video clip. You can only do it to a frame, but you can't apply it to the entire video. I know photoshop is not a video editing software, but having this sort of feature makes sense for photoshop users especially with content aware fill.

I'm a career software architect engineer of 35 years, and I have to side with Howard on this one.
Like Howard, I feel you're thinking about this way too simplistically.  Trying to work out what best to fill a part of an image with in 3 dimensions (x, y, and time) and have it look believable almost boggles the mind, especially thinking of a general case (your logo example is far to simplistic in itself).  The task is far from a simple looping repeat of what is being done 2 dimensionally on a still frame.  Frankly, it's more likely related to what's done with CGI, where scenes are modeled in 3D (4D actually) so certain elements can be replaced believably.
Think about it...  If CAF is presently replacing part of an image with something it finds through some heuristics in another part of the image, and the stuff in that part of each frame is changing - and it would, because this is video, not still imagery - then it will select differently every time.  What makes you think it would select something that even resembles what it selected for another frame?  What you'd end up with is a frame by frame mishmash that would just make the outline of the selection obvious.
Regarding CAF applied to individual frames, then your finding the result isn't coming out as expected in all the frames of the video (e.g., when you're testing this concept) may indicate a problem with the way you're using the tool, or possibly even a bug.  You might want to describe step by step what you're doing and show the result you're [not] getting.

  • How to use data sets with smart objects?

    Hi,
I have a psd of some mock-up boxes, and I want to apply different text to multiple versions. The solution here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/creating-data-driven-graphics.html is good, but doesn't seem to work with smart objects?
The file that I have has the box label as a smart object (which opens as a psb). How could I apply a data set to that, and have it pump out multiple jpegs?
If I apply the data set to the psb layers, then go back to the main image, I cannot export the whole complete picture anymore.
    Thanks!

What database and connection type are you using? Are you connecting the report directly to the database, or trying to assign the datasource to object data?
It sounds like you might be trying to use a linked list, collection or other C# construct to pass your data in. This currently isn't supported by the Crystal Reports SDK. You can use a DataSet or a DataTable, and possibly also an IDataReader depending on which version of Crystal Reports you're referencing in your project. Of course you can also connect directly to the database, even if the database isn't on the same machine as the application.
The way to show master records with detail information is through the use of subreports and linked subreport parameters. Linked subreports take their parameter value from a record in the main report, so that only the data appropriate to that master record is displayed. The guys over in the [report design|SAP Crystal Reports; forum can help you out with this if you have questions on the specifics.

  • Removing Print from a Photo with Photoshop CS5's Content-Aware Fill

If I have a whole line of type on top of a photo a clients sends me and I want to remove it, can I mark the whole line off with the Healing Brush Tool and proceed? Or do I need to select each letter individually?

  • How to save a file with smart object?

I have just created a file from LR2, by choosing 'open as smart object' in PS.
I then added a cloning layer and did my cloning.
When I wanted to save the file, instead of PS turning it in into a PSD with the same name, I now suddenly got the 'save as' pop up screen and '-2' as the recommended name. The original folder where the file came from was not shown.
I don't know what that's all about, but I'd prefer it would just save the file as a PSD and automatically show the file alongside the NEF in LR2, like it does when I don't use the 'open as smart object' feature. Is this typical for working with smart objects opened straight from LR2?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Marsel

Well, like this you open the file s a smart object, so if you want to now clone on a layer but want it to be a part of the smart object then you go to the layer panel and click on the smart object's icon there to edit the smart object and you hit save (command S) and it will save with that layer to your original.
then when you click the tab or the window that has the original opened as smart object those changes will be reflected, but you will not see your cloned layer active as that is a part of the smart object and you have to open the smart object to get to it.
What you say! Yes that is what I say that is what a smart object is, you are using the smart object as a part of another document( that is why you are being asked to save as, as this new documents you can now make changes which will not effect the original which is the smart object unless you rasterize it which will make it no longer a smart object.
What good is a smart object, well there are many say you are using this document or image if you wish in say five projects and the image has been retouched and it is determined it should have some more work done to it all you have to do is retouch the smart object and all five projects are updated.
    You see smart.
And of course you can d things to all five projects that can be different from one another on other layers without ever destroying the work you have done to the smart object.

  • Content aware fill, fills with black'ish color but not content "CS6 beta"

    Hi guys,
I am working on a pano, which i am rotating and straighting, the idea being to use content aware fill to fill in the gap in the sky. However, when I apply the Content aware fill, I am getting a darkish block of color where i had done my marque selection.
Hopefully this is visable in the image attached
I am not sure if its because of the size of the image (approx 150x30in @ 300dpi) 2.8gb. but i have 96gb of ram so that shouldn't be an issue.
anyway, i thought id share this and hopefully also find a solution
    thanks

Just want to add, that small selections are ok, as in I can do contentaware fill, on small selections, but not across the whole pano.

  • How can I duplicate a smart object and then edit it, without affecting the original?

I have a vector element from illustrator that I am placing in a tshirt mockup in photoshop. I have the layout essentially how I would like, but I am trying different color variations. I would think to just duplicate the first placement and then edit the color of the resulting copy, but this affects both the copy and the original. I looked into it a bit further, and found that I should try the "replace contents" option under smart objects, and that this would change the copy. So I go back to illustrator, made a copy of the original vector, and then made the color change I had in mind, and then saved it as a separate document that I could then use in replacing the contents of the copied. This however, is still affecting both smart objects!
I have tried this as both linked smart objects and embedded smart objects without success.
Ultimately, I simply want to maintain the position of the original layer with the duplicated and edited layers. If you know of a better way, please share!

I'm on CC on a Mac.
What 21 is talking about is making some sense.
I am able to create new smart object via copy, then create a variation on the original file linked in the parent smart object. Then I save that from illustrator with a different file name. Then I go back to photoshop and replace contents of the new smart object, linking it to the newer illustrator file.
This gets around the problem, but it takes a few more steps than the same thing did it in earlier versions of photoshop.

  • Content-aware fill and layers

One thing I'd been wondering about very eagerly is whether the content-aware fill feature(s) would source their content from multiple layers, or only from the current layer, or whether there might be an option, as for the clone stamp tool for example, to choose whether the current layer, the current layer and below, or all layers were sampled for content.
I hadn't noticed any demonstration of content-aware fill on a document having multiple pixel layers.
Here are the results from my testing. (They may be wrong!)
What I want to be able to do, is to put a single "corrections" layer at the top of a layer stack, and to make local corrections using content from all layers below—with the latter being rasterized on the fly as necessary, so that the cumulative effect of masks, layer effects, blending modes, transparency, knockout, adjustment layers and anything else, are all used as content for the corrections. Until now I've done something similar but more limited with the clone stamp tool. Content awareness seemed to offer greater promise, for three reasons. (1) No back and forth: no choosing and monitoring of source pixels. (2) No visible softening of the correction at the edge of the brush. (3) The promise of imperceptible results with very little thought or work.
    So, can we do this?
For fill, content-awareness only extends to pixels in the current layer. It doesn't look below. If the current layer is empty, then Photoshop comes back with a message that filling is not possible in content-aware mode, because not enough content can be found. If the current layer is blank (e.g. all white), then you just get more blank. That's fair enough. You could use content-aware fill early, on source layers, or late and destructively, after flattening. But not what I'm looking for.
The same is not true of the spot healing brush, which has both a "content aware" option and a "sample all layers option". And it works wonders. It does exactly what I want. Empty layer, sample all layers, run the the brush over dodgy parts of the image, and hey presto—it really does feel as if you have a wand in your hand.
This feature alone would be enough to persuade me to upgrade to CS5, since it will save me hours of work and produce a better result (in my context, cartography). Well done Adobe.

You're asking about a pretty rarified realm.  Not a whole lot of people ever have 24GB let alone beyond.
I stitch big panos all the time, though 1 GP is a fair bit larger than most I do; mine are in the 100-300 MP range.  I should mention I almost exclusively edit in 16 bits/channel mode.  I also use content aware fill fairly regularly without problems.  In my case I have 8 GB of RAM in a Dell Precision workstation.  It doesn't seem to get too winded with 8 GB, so 24 GB seems about right for what you want.
You definitely DO want a workstation that's been purpose-built for extra throughput and reliability if you're going to be working on ultra-large datasets.
I'd say buy the workstation with 24 GB of RAM and see how it goes.  Also the RAID is a very good idea (I use RAID 0).  Apparently the 6 Gb/sec SATA stuff is starting to become real too, though most drives can't even keep up with the old 3 Gb speed yet.

  • Content Aware Fill--"not enough memory"

After watching a video on Adobe's site about using the new "Content aware fill" tool in CS5, I am attempting to fill the blank space left when merging five images to make a panorama. The resulting file, after flattening, is 296M. When I select the blank area around the image and attemp to content fill, it begins work and then stops about halfway through with this message, "Could not fill because there is not enough memory (RAM)".
I'm running a MacPro (3,1) with OS 10.6.3, with 26 GB RAM. Photoshop recognizes all the RAM, and I have dedicated 22 GB just for Photoshop. Surely this is enough RAM for just about any operation one can attempt in Photoshop. PS is running in 64 bit, too. Any help on this issue would be very much appreciated.

Murph my first thought on this is there might be something else runniing that is eating up your memory.
I'm running a Mac Pro 2008 with 24GB rams with 70% or just over 16GB available and have had
no issues doing the same thing you are attempting on tiff images that are 1.4GB in size.
Check your activity monitor and see what's running and how much memory is being used by other
    processes.
